Some Descendants of Sir John PECKHAM

Seventh Generation

(Continued)

407. Oliver BABCOCK (Daniel BABCOCK , Oliver BABCOCK , James BABCOCK , Elizabeth SAUNDERS , Mary PECKHAM , John ) was born 12 Dec 1797 in Hopkinton, Washington Co., Rhode Island. He died 9 Sep 1869 in Potter Hill, Washington Co., Rhode Island.

BABCOCK AND ALLIED FAMILIES, by M.M. Lewis, Brooklyn, New York. page 14.
Oliver was born in Hopkinton, RI, Dec. 12, 1797, and died at Potter Hill, RI, Sept. 9, 1869. Educated in the schools of his native town, he supplemented his schooling with good reading. As a young man he taught singing school during winter evenings, was an excellent choir singer and acted as chorister in his church for about twenty-five years. When only twelve years of age he was baptized and untied with the First Seventh Day Baptist Church of Hopkinton, with which he remained a member during the rest of his life. He was always deeply interested in the schools of his neighborhood and for many years acted as school trustee, hiring the teachers and always making them welcome guests in his home at the time when "boarding around" was the method of taking care of the teachers during the school terms.
He served his town as justice of the peace of taxes and in various other capacities. By his efforts the Potter Hill post office was established, and he was the first portmaster. About 1824 he entered into partnership with his eldest brother Daniel, for the manufacture of edge tools at Potter Hill, RI, and made the name of D. Babcock & Company upon any tool a sign of real excellence. The partnership continued about fourty years, when the water power was sold to the factory owners at Potter Hill.
In June, 1842, when the Dorr war occurred in RI and the State government and threatened, Mr. Babcock, aas sargeant, "shouldered his musket" and with his brother Daniel, and his own son, Nathan, then a young man less than eighteen years of age went to Providence in the company of Captain William Potter, 3rd Regiment, erd Brigade of State Volunteers, to fight if need be for, "law and order", but no fighting occurred. It is a matter of record that Mr. Babcock was eminently a social, genial man, fond of his family and friends, devoted to his church, a temperance reformer among the first of his town, and an enthusiast in the cause of anti-slavery, though not an adherent of the Abolition party. He was an "all-round, broad-minded man." Previous to his marriage he settled at Potter Hill, RI, where the remainder of his life was spent. His widow, who survived him seventeen years, lived in the same house for sixty-two years. "He was Justice of the Peace of Westerly in 1843, 46, 47, 48." Oliver Babcock married at Stonington, CT., Januaary 11, 1824, Phebe Babcock.

Oliver married Phebe BABCOCK, daughter of Stephen BABCOCK and Phebe BURCH, on 11 Jan 1824 in Stonington, New London Co., CT. Phebe was born 5 Mar 1802 in Westerly, Washington Co., Rhode Island. She died 15 Oct 1886 in Potter Hill, Washington Co., Rhode Island.

Was born at Potter Hill, RI, Nov. 19, 1824, and died at Westerly RI (Pawcatuck) May 31, 1902. The greater part of his youth until he was fifteen years of age was passed with his maternal grandparents in Stonington. There he received his early school training and continued his studies until, at the age of fifteen, he went to his father's home at Westerly, where he attended school for two winters. In May 1892, he went to Warwick RI, and began his independent career by entering the empl.oy of Lavally, Lamphear & Company, a machine company, with whom, as apprentice, journeyman, and during the last leven years, as sub-contractor, he remained for thirteen years. At the end of that time, in 1855, he formed a partnership with Calveert B. Cottrell, under the firm style of Cottrell & Babcock for the manufacture of cotton and woolen machinery and in July of the same year removed to the village of Pawcatuck, in Stonington, CT, where the firm began business, employing at first, not more than half a dozen men. In a short time the manufacture of power printing presses was begun and soon this becam the principal branch of the business.
From the beginning, Mr. Babcock had the entire management of the works. He attended to all the details of the business, devised plans for buildings, organized the several departments and allowed no part of the activities of any to escape his critical observation. So close was his personal supervision of the plant that at the beginning no piece of machinery was sent away from the factory without his personal "inspection and approval." This insured quailty products, and brought steady growth and enlargement of the business. So close was the application of Mr. Babcock that for years together he was not absent for a single day, and it is not too much to say that the establishment of this enterprise, which for a quarter of a century gave employment to so large a body of men, was due largely to the ability and untiring energy of Mr. Babcock.

Benjamin-7 Babcock was born, probably at Stonington, Connecticut. He is buried in the Babcock Family Cemetery on Babcock Hill. They resided at Bridgewater, Suquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, until 1818, when they removed to what is now known as Babcock Hill.
Benjamin Babcock (2nd) settled on a tract of land, consisting of several hundred acres (believed 640) on Babcock Hill. This was virgin forest land at the time, 1818, covered with a heavy growth of pine, hemlock, and other trees. With the aid of his sons, Benjamin cleared this land, or portions thereof, building a house and barn of logs. He later constructed a primitave saw mill, located on the creek at the foot of Babcock Hill toward the village of Cadis. Water power was used to operate an old-fashioned "beam" saw, by means of which the heavy trees were fashioned into sills, joists, planking, and boards for the construction of new and better buildings. The old Babcock homestead and at least one of the old barns, constructed of timber of this primitive mill, are still standing.
Upon the death of Benjamin Babcock the land was apportioned among his children. William Dennison Babcock, the oldest son received a grant of land consisting of over 200 acres, located about one half mile north of the homestead farm. The latter, consisting of 306 acres, was left to the other children who had remained at the home. Harriet N. Babcock had married Alexander LaDow and had removed to Ohio. Hellen M. Babcock died in 1843, while Caroline Joshan Babcock and Joanah Babcock died young. So the homestead farm was left to John Bannister Gibson Babcock (1st), Valeria Ann Babcock, and Andrew Jackson Babcock. The Babcock family burying ground is the only portion of the original estate in which the title still remains in the Babcock family as a whole. The old estate and burying ground are located about 10 miles south of Owego, New York, and about 1.5 miles north of Windham, Pennsylvania.

The following list is based on burials reported on a list available at the Tippecanoe County Historical Society (presumably WPA list), plus the TCHS cemetery cards, plus what was found or not found in 1999 by a group of volunteers restoring the cemetery. We have added a little historical information when it was useful for interpreting stones and gravesites we found.
This list is based on research by Janet Walton, Deb Fisher and Holly Schrank, and a search for stones by neighbors of the cemetery using the TCHS list burials (original List) at the cemetery.
