Eliax and his brother Ichabod moved, in 1788, from Canaan, Conn., to Poultney, Vermont and settled in Fennell Hollow, on a farm he bought of Philip Howe, which he paid for in part with cattle which he had driven from Connecticut. In the early part of his life he was an active citizen, and rendered effecient service in sustaining the Congregational Church. He did the stonework free of charge in the Congregational church edifice in Poultney, Vermont.

Elias married Hannah BARBER about 1800. Hannah was born in Connecticut. She died about 1870 in E. Poultney, Vermont.

Before her marriage she made the trip to Bridgewater, Oneida Co., NY, on horstback, with her four brothers. Returning to her home in Stonington, she was married, and then went with her husband in a carriage to Babcock Hill, Bridgewater, where they made a permanent settlement. She was the daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth (Palmer) Babcock [Oliver, James, James, John, James]. He father, Joshua Babcock, was a farmer and a merchant on Pendleton Hill, Conn. For about thirty years he was deacon of the Baptist Church, and for about twenty-seven years Justice of the Peace -- by virtue of which office he solemnized many marriages. Elizabeth Babcock had a brother Joshua who married Eunice Brown, daughter of Christopher and Margaret (Holmes) Brown. Christopher Brown lived two miles south of Pendleton Hill, and on this farm he is buried; also his father, Daniel (24). [For Joshua Babcock's record, see Babcock Genealogy, page 108]

Elizabeth married Peleg BROWN, son of Amos BROWN and Eunice TURNER, on 19 Oct 1871 in Pendleton Hill, Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. Peleg was born 23 Mar 1775 in Preston, New London Co., Connecticut. He died 2 Oct 1860 in Bridgewater, Madison Co., New York.
