160. Billington CRUMB (William CRUMB , Mercy SAUNDERS , Mary PECKHAM , John ) was born about 1743 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. He died after 1807 in Readsboro, Vermont.

THE CRUMB GENEALOGY, DESCENDANTS OF DANIEL CRUMB, of Westerly, Rhode Island, compiled by Clara Crumb Fisk, Sarasota Florida (1956), found in the DAR Library, Washington DC, pages 19, 28-29.
    16. Billington-4, Crumb (William-3, William-2, Daniel-1) of Westerly, RI, Leyden, Mass., and Readsboro, Vermont, son of William and Jerusha (Edwards) Crumb, born about 1743 in Westerly, RI; died after 1807 in Readsboro. He married about 1770, Phebe ___.
In 1760 Billington's name appears on the Westerly tax list, under his father's name -- and, as he must have been at least 17 at that time, it would place his birth about 1743.
In 1772, Jan. 27, he transferred land in Westerly to Simeon Crumb, and the deed was singed by Phebe (Land Rec. Book 10, p. 343). In 1774 he was in Westerly with three females in the family (Westerly Census). In 1775 he was in Florida, Mass. In 1781 he paid a poll tax in Bernardston, Mass.
In 1789 he was living in Leyden, in the part called "The Gore", which was about that time set off from Bernardston. In 1789 he was elected Town Officer of Leyden. In 1790 Leyden Census, he had two sons under 16 and 5 females in the family.
In 1795 he moved to Readsboro where he purchased 100 acres in what is now Readsboro Village. The State road runs through what was his farm (Readsboro Town Rec.)
In 1803 he deeded part of his farm to son, Edward, in 1804 he deeded him the remainder; in 1807 Edward leased this farm to Billington and Phebe.
A Revolutionary soldier; he served as Corporal in Capt. Thomas Thompson's Co. in 1777; Col. William Barton's Regt., 1777 and 1778 as Corporal, Capt. Thompson's Co., Col. John Topsham's Regt. (RI State Rec, Providence, RI).
He was with Lieut. Col. William Barton in July 1776 during one of the most daring and skillful executed acts during the war, the capture of General Prescott.
"Prescott, the commander of the British forces in RI, had his quarters at a farm-house about four miles from Newport on the west side of the island, a mile from any troop, with no patrols along the shore, and no protection but the Sentry and the guard-ship in the bay. Informed of this rashness, William Barton, as a native of Warren, then a Lieutenant-Colonel in the RI militia, on the night following the ninth of July, embarked in whale-boats at Warwick Neck a party of forty volunteers, steered between the island of Patience and Prudence, and landed at Redwood Creek -- coming up across the field, then surrounded Prescott's house, burst open the doors, took him and Lieut. Barrington out of their beds, hurried them to the water without giving them time to put on their clothes and, while several men from the camps were searching for their tracks on the shore, they passed under the stern of the guard-ship which lay against Hope Island, regained Warwick, and forwarded the captives to the American headquarters in Providence.
The rank of Prescott was equal to that of Lee, and Washington and promptly effected an exchange." (Bancroft's History of the U.S., Vol. V, p. 569).
