    James Babcock, Jr.-4 was born in Westerly RI, Dec. 23, 1688, and died in Stonington, now North Stonington, CT, April 9, 1731. He and his wife settled upon a farm in that part of Stonington, which is now Pendleton Hill, land which was owned by his father and was later found to be partly in Stonington and partly in Voluntown, and much of which was held in the family for more than a hundred and fifty years. James and his wife joined Stonington Church (Congregational), Rev. James Noyes, pastor, Aug. 8, 1708, and left with others to join the North Stonington Church in 1727. He was originally buried on the farm, but in the fall of 1900, Colonel Andrew J. Babcock of Springfield, Illinois, and Stephen Babcock, compiler of the "Babcock Genealogy," published in 1903, caused the graves of James and his wife, and their sons, Oliver and Timothy, and their wives to be removed to a well-kept cemetery near the Pendleton Hill meeting house.
    James Babcock, Jr.-4, married in Milton, Mass, June 12, 1706, Sarah Vose, who was born in Milton, August 30, 1684, and died in North Stonington, CT, Dec. 25, 1758, daughter of Edward and Abigail Vose. Edward Vose was born in England in 1636, and died in Milton, MA. Abigail, mother of Sarah Vose, died in Milton, May 18, 1712, granddaughter of Robert Vose, born in Lancaster England about 1599, who came to America with his three sons, Edward, Thomas and Henry, and brought land in Milton MA, July 13, 1654.

James married Sarah VOSE, daughter of Edward VOSE and Abigail SHARP, on 12 Jun 1706 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. Sarah was born 30 Aug 1684 in Milton, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. She died 25 Dec 1758 in No. Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut.

    Elizabeth-4 Babcock, dau. of Capt. James-3 and Elizabeth Babcock (John-2, James-1), b. Westerly, Feb. 8, 1691, m. 1710 (?), Elder Thomas Clark, son of Joseph and Bethiah (Hubbard) Clark, b. Westerly, Mar. 17, 1686, and d. there Nov. 26, 1767.
    For the last seventeen years of his life he was assistant pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Westerly, now the First Seventh Day Baptist Church of Hopkinton.
    Elder Thomas Clark was buried in the Clark burying ground in Westerly, near the bank of the Pawcatuck River, about half a mile above the "meetinghouse bridge." Later his remains were removed to the site formerly occupied by the "meetinghouse" in which he preached, and his name is incribed upon "The Ministers' Monument", erected in 1899 upon the same site.

    33. Anne-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was baptized 22 August 1703, at the First Church, Stonington, Conn. She married at Westerly, RI, 21 May 1724, Samuel Babcock, son of Capt. james and Elizabeth Babcock. He was born at Westerly, RI, 15 FEb 1797, and died there in 1772.
    On the 22d July 1747, Samuel Babcock gave receipt to Benoni Smith for the legacies in the will of his father-in-law, Caleb Pendleton, made "To my wife Anne, son Nathan, daughter Elizabeth, and daughter Anne" (West. C & P Rec., iii, 329). His won will, dated 13 Mar 1768, names wife Anna, sons Nathan and Samuel, Jr., daughter Thankful Babcock, and grandchildren, Joseph Smith, William Smith and Joshua Smith (West. C & P. Rec., iv, 197).

    Samuel-5 Babcock, Jr., second son of Samuel-4 and Ann (Pendleton) Babcock (James-3, John-2, James-1), b. Westerly, RI, May 16, 1731; d. there Mar. 23, 1813; m. Westerly, Jan. 23, 1755, Mary Smith, dau. of Benoni and Ruth (Pendleton) Smith, b. Westerly, Oct. 2, 1733, d. Westerly, May 1, 1822. Both were buried in the Masatoxet (Babcock) burying ground, Westerly, and have inscribed stones.
    On Oct. 2, 1777, three boats, each contained seven men, were fitted out in Westerly to join Sullivan's expedition on the island of Rhode Island. In passing Point Judith in the night, when the sea was very rough, two of the boats were capsized, and of the fourteen men thrown into the sea eight were drowned. So far as known, their names were William Babcock, Nathan Babcock, Nathan Babcock, Joseph Hall, Zebulon Pendleton, Isaac Pendleton, and Mr. Bigelow. The first two, William and Nathan Babcock, were the eldest sons of Samuel, Jr., and Mary Smith Babcock. Their thrid son, Paul was among the number thrown into the sea but was rescued. The second Nathan drowned was son of Col. Nathan. Westerly and Its Witnesses, by Dennison, contains an interesting account of the accident.

    iii. Samuel, Jr., b. 16 May 1731; d. at Westerly, 23 March 1813; m. 23 Jany 1755, Mary-5 Smith, his first cousin. They were the parents of twelve children, two of whom, William and Nathan, were drowned off Pt. Judith, 2 Oct 1777, in the disaster that befell the expedition Westerly fitted out to join Gen. Spencer on the island of Rhode Island.

   34. Read-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), born probably at Westerly, RI, married at Westerly, 31 Oct 1728, John Saunders, probably son of John and Silva, or Silena, Saunders, born at Westerly, 13 Oct 1705, and died there in 1777.
    On the 6th of March, 1747, John Saunders, Jr. gave to Benoni Smith recipt for his wife's legacy in her father's will (Westerly C. & P. Rec., iii, 331).
    His own will, dated 10 Jan 1777, recorded 25 Feb 1777, at Westerly, RI (C&P Rec., iv, 344), names wife, Read, Sarah Lanphere, sons David, Benjaman, Wait and Joshua, daughter, Mary Stillmanh in his will dated 1777. So she was living on that date.

    4. Joseph-3 CRUMB (William-2, David-1) of Westerly, RI, son of William and Mercy (Saughters) Crumb, born about 1699 in Westerly, died in 1778. He married first in Westerly in June 1734 (by John Babcock, J.P.) Amey Cottrell, daughter of Nicholas II and sister to Nathaniel and Elizabeth Cottrell. He married secondly July 26, 1759 (by Benoni Smith, J.P.) Rebecca Hall. Rebecca Hall. Rebecca married (2) John Crandall and was living in 1780.
    (Note). From unpublished records dealing with division of the estate of Nicholas Cottrell II, and subsequent family deals, is proved that Amy Cottrell was child of Nicholas II. Also, from a land record we have: "Nathaniel Cottrell to sister, Amy Crumb (wife of Joseph) and sister to Elizabeth Cottrell, land in Westerly, May 20, 1743." Witnessed by John and George Stillman. (Deed Book 3, p. 97).
    Joseph Crumb made his will April 14, 1778, and in 1778, July 29, Rebecca Crumb conveyed to Sylvester Crumb, house and land for support during her life (Land Rec., Vol. II, p. 20). Oct. 3, 1778 she also gave land to David Crumb (Land Rec., Vol. II, p. 24). 1780, March 28 she and John Crandall conveyed land at "Crumb's Neck" to Sylvester (Land Rec., Vol. II, p. 51).

    In the name of God Amen, I, Joseph Crumb of Westerly in the County of Kings in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation Yeoman.
    And as to what worldly interest wherewith it hast pleased God to Bless me my Will is that after my just debts & funeral changes are paid. I give my well beloved wife Rebecca Crumb all my personal estate during her widowhood except one bed which I give to my son Sylvester Crumb to be delivered to him within one month after my Deceased by my Executor.
    I give to my sons to Joseph to Samuel to Wait to William & to David five shillings in money each and in case my wife married again my will is that my personal estate should be equally divided between my wife & son David and at her deceased her half is to be returned to that David or his heirs. And I hereby ordain & appoint my son David Crumb to be my Executor to this my last will & testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the 14th day of April A.D. 1778.

    11. Samuel-4 Crumb (Jos.-3, Wm.-2, Dan.-1) of Westerly, RI, Farmington, Bristol and Burlington, Conn., son of Joseph and Amey (Cottrell) Crumb, was born Aug. 22, 1740 in Westerly, died probably in Burlington. He married Dec. 15, 1772 in Hartford County, Rachel Andrus, born Dec. 25, 1751, daughter of Timothy and Rachel (Atkins) Andrus. John Andrus was on of the first settlers of Farmington. At age 17 years, Samuel Crumb was on the Westerly tax list in 1757, and on April 14, 1778, he was named in his father's will.
    1790, Samuel was in Bristol, Conn., with one male over 16, 4 males under 16, and 3 females in the family (1790, RI Census). 1786, August 22, he bought land in Bristol of John Crocker (Bristol Land Rec. Book 1, p. 128). 1791, May 14, he gave quit claim to Bartholomew Briggs (ibid., Book 3, p. 430).
    Bristol and Burlington, a part of Farmington, were set off from that town in 1785. Burlington had quite a settlement of Free Will Baptists in the early days. About early Burlington -- In a handwritten pamphlet, written by J. C. Hart, Esq. of Plainfield, Conn. in 1875, is the following; "We will take the road down the hill, N.E. -- we find Samuel Crumbe on the west side of the road -- he had been a sailor but afterwards was a farmer. And next to Giles Griswold, Samuel Crumbe, sone of Samuel, Sr., a day laborer." In Burlington, this Crumb family brought what was known in 1814 as the Hitchcock Mill.
       
Samuel married Rachel ANDRUS, daughter of Timothy ANDRUS and Rachel ATKINS, on 15 Dec 1772 in Hartford Co., Connecticut. Rachel was born 25 Dec 1751 in Farmington, Connecticut.

    5. Rachel-2 Crumb (Wm.-2, Dan.-1), daughter of William and Mercy (Saunders) Crumb, baptized in 1700 in Westerly, RI, died after 1751. She married first in Westerly, Nov. 10, 1715 (by Peter Crandall, J. P.), Joseph Hadsall, b. in 1695; died Sept. 25, 1727, son of Joseph and Hannah (___) and grandson of Joseph and Mary (Perry) Hadsall. She married secondly, June 4, 1736, Obidiah Pendleton, born NOv. 1, 1712 in Westerly, died Oct. 11, 1792, son of James-3 (Caleb-2, Brian-1) Pendleton. Obidiah m. (2) Rebecca Reynolds.
    1727, Nov. 3. The Town Council ordered inventory of Hadsall's estate and appointed Rachel administratrix. She presented account of Estate before she married Pendleton. It was voted that Rachel be allowed 75-9-8 for keeping two of her children while Hadsall's widow.
   1730, June 29., the Town Council accepted William Crumb as boundsman for the support of Rachel's child called "Joe" (C-P-1719 - 173-, p. 228). Rachel was living Jan. 3, 1751, as she signed a deed on that date to William Wilbur.

Rachel married (1) Joseph HADSELL, son of Joseph HADSELL and Hannah, on 10 Nov 1715 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. Joseph was born before 1695 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. He died 25 Sep 1727 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island.

    Joseph was born before 1695, d. 9-25-1715, m. 11-10-1715 Rachel, dau. Wm. & Mary (Saunders) Crumb. Joined together in wedlock by Peter Crandel, Justice of the Peace, in the bounds of Westerly, RI. Occupation: farmer, blacksmith and boatman. Resided near Westerly, RI.
    November 13, 1727, the town council of Westerly grants Rachel Administratrix of Joseph's estate and assigns Theadaty Rhodes, John Maxon and John Hill appraisers. The inventory - a long list - includes a complete blacksmith shop, bellows, vice, anvil, and all the tools, horses, cattle, a long list of household goods, farm tools, a valuable boat and a farm.
    On March 29, 1742, she came before the council and gave accounting of her administration. She was allowed 78 lbs. 9s, 8d, for keeping her said dead husband's children. She M. second time Obadiah Pendleton of Westerly.
