Born 24 Mar 1785 (Bible), probably in Saratoga Co., NY, son of Asa Hewitt and ____, perhaps Mahaley ____. He died in Day, Saratoga Co., NY, 17 Nov 1826, age 41 years (Bible & tombstone). William married MARY (Polly) ____ about 1806. Mary was born in Rhode Island, 25 Jul 1780 (Bible). She died in Edinburg, Saratoga Co., NY, 27 Feb 1868, in her 88th year (Bible & tombstone). Mary's maiden name may have been Sprague. She seems to have been related to Rhoby Sprague, bon c 1774 in RI, who married Samuel Cheadle and lived in Edinburg, VT.
William and Mary resided in Edinburg, NY. In 1819, their home was on land set off from Edinburg to form the Town of Concord, Saratoga Co., NY. Shortly after that, it was discovered that there was another town called Concord in NY so the Saratoga town was changed to the Town of Day.
Mary lived many years after William's death. She stayed for a while in Day, then later moved in with her daughter, Sophia Scribner, sometime before 1850. In 1855, Mary lived briefly with her son, William, in Day but by 1860 and 1865, she was again with daughter Sophia in Edinburg.
No probate records were found for William or Mary. The family farm in Day of 60 improved acres and 80 unimproved seems to have gone to the youngest son, William Sabin Hewitt, who reported in 1855 that he had lived there for 30 years.

He and Lydia helped organize the Presbyterian Church at Mead's Creek. The first meeting was held in their home on 3 Jan 1824. Darius was elected an elder of the Church.
In 1837, Darius and Lydia sold their land and moved their family to Kane Co., IL where they purchased a farm in Dundee and remained their the rest of their lives. Darius drew up a will, dated 10 Jul 1854, and probated 26 Oct 1855 (Kane Co. Probate Records, Book 10, p. 154). The will gave all his personal estate and real estate to his wife Lydia as long as she remained his widow. After her death, the land was to be divided equally among his 3 sons, Elias, Darius and John A. Hewitt, and his daughter Asenath, wife of Alonzo S. Harpending. A plot of land, 24 square rods, north of the house on the farm, was to be set aside as a family burying ground. An inventory taken 22 Jun 1855, gave a value of $1497 in animals and personal property, plus $450 owed to Darius. His real estate of a 203-acre farm was valued over $6090. In 1860, the widow Lydia was living on the farm in Dundee with her sons, John and Darius.
