Born in Canaan, Litchfield Co., Conn., son of Ephraim Hewitt and Mary Randall; died in Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., NY, 2 May 1850, age 90 years (tombstone). Randall married Experience Hewitt (#255) about 1785. Experience was born in Conn. About 1766, daughter of Richard Hewitt (#88) and Experience Leeds; she died at Seneca Falls, NY, 3 Aug 1840, in her 75th year (tombstone). Both were buried in the Springbrook Cemetery at Seneca Falls, NY.
Randall and his brother John enlisted as privates during the Revolutionary War in Capt. John Steven's co., Col. Burrell's regt. of the Conn. Line. They left Canaan on 2 Mar 1776 and marched to Lower Canada to reinforce General Montgomery's troops in Quebec. At a place called Cedars, the brothers were captured by a party of British and Indians on 19 May 1776. John was released 9 days later but Randall was detained as a prisoner in Canada for over 5 years. He was recaptured by an Oneida scout while on an errand in the woods and taken to Albany, NY. There he was put in prison until his father secured his release in July 1781, by order of Governor George Clinton.
Randall applied for a government pension on 3 Jun 1823 while living at Italy, Yates Co., NY (Rev. War Pension #S43664). At that time, his wife Experience and the 2 youngest sons, Nelson, age 16, and Christopher, age 14, were still living at home. Randall stated on his application that he was in dire straits and unable to do heavy labor due to rheumatism in his back. His only personal property, wearing apparel, bedding, a few utensils and a cow, were valued at $17. The pension was granted at the rate of $8 per month for the remainder of his life.
During the years Randall was captive, his parents and brothers had moved from Canaan, Conn. to the Stillwater area north of Albany, NY. Randall joined them and a few years later married Experience Hewitt. The resided in Stillwater, Saratoga Co. until 1796 when they moved to Oppenheim, Montgomery Co. (now Fulton Co.) NY. By 1820, the family was living in Geneseo, Ontario Co., NY, and a short time later, they resided in Italy, Yates Co., NY. They resettled before 1840, in Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., NY and remained there.
Randall died intestate. In 1850, the court appointed his son, Silas Hewitt, to administer the estate (Seneca Co. Probate Records, Book A3, p. 543). The 9 youngest children survived their father and were mentioned, with their locations, in the distribution of Randall's estate in 1850.
Note: Randall and Experience may have had another daughter, Betsey, b. 7 Nov. 1789 who married William Wright, 6 Sep 1804 in Oppenheim. NY, and died before 1850 (Query to National Archives requesting information on Richard or Randall Hewitt, included in the Revolutionary War Pension File on Randall Hewitt, #S43664). Nothing further is known.

She continued to live on the Hewitt farm which her 3 sons - Amos, Henry and Christopher - had inherited from their grandfather, Richard Hewitt in 1837, after their grandmother's death. The farm covered 130 acres in Milton. Christopher's 3 daughters - Mary Ann, Jerusha and Charlotte - were bequeathed $100 from their grandfather's estate, the money was to be paid when the girls reached 18 years of age or were married.

On 27 Apr 1835, Sarah's son Amos P. Hewitt, signed a quit claim for his portion of the grandfather's farm in Milton to his mother (Book Z, p. 524). Son Henry F. Hewitt of Buffalo, NY sold his portion of land 21 Sept 1837, and son Christopher Hewitt of Milton sold his portion 2 Oct 1837, both to Truman Safford (Book EE, p. 521).

Born in Stonington, Conn., 22 May 1756 (Rev. War Pension File), son of Abijah Hewitt and Mary _____; died in Charlton, Saratoga Col., NY, 26 Sep 1841, in his 86th year (tombstone). Thomas married SARAH HEWITT (#270).
Sarah was born in Conn. about 1775, daughter of Richard Hewitt (#88) and Experience Leeds; she died in Carlton, NY, 25 Feb 1860, in her 85th year (tombstone). Both she and Thomas were buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Charlton.
Thomas enlisted in the Conn. Line in 1776 from Stonington during the Revolutionary War. He later served in the Sea Service in the same war. Sarah applied for a widow's pension on her husband's service record in 1852 but the government rejected her claim (#R4939).
The pension application listed the 8 children still living who were born to Thomas and Sarah. It stated that soon after the war, Thomas left Conn. and moved to Milton, Saratoga Co., NY where he resided for 8 years before going to Genoa, Cayuga Co., NY in 1792. Thomas returned to Saratoga co. about 1803 to live in Ballston for a few years. The family then settled in West Galway, Broadalbin, Montgomery Co., NY where they remained until 1832. In their old age, Thomas and Sarah moved to Charlton, Saratoga Co., to be near their son, Amos.
Sarah was mentioned in her father's will, dated 20 Feb 1819, at Milton, NY as being the wife of Capt. Thomas Hewitt. Thomas was named as one of the executors of Richard Hewitt's estate (Saratoga Co. Probate Records, Book 6, p. 442).
A farmer and miller, Thomas had 95-acre farm in Broadalbin. He also owned and operated a gristmill on Hewitt's Pond on his property. He was well respected, active in community affairs, a captain in the local militia, and an elder of the 1st Presbyterian Church of West Galway. The church records listed the dates of birth for Thomas and Sarah's children when they were baptized.
Thomas wrote his will 9 Jan 1837, and it was probated 2 Jul 1845 (Saratoga Co. Probate Records, Book 13, pp. 463-466). The will provided for his wife Sarah and for his sister-in-law, Anna (Miner) Hewitt, widow of Amos Hewitt, during their natural lives. Half of all the real estate, plus 2 cows, a hog and all the household furniture, were to be theirs. If the property bequeathed to Sarah and Anna was not sufficient to support them, son Amos was to have their 1/2 of the real estate. Amos was given the other 1/2 of all real estate and personal property after he paid $150 to each of Thomas' daughters who were not married at the time of Thomas' death -- Maria, Melissa, Eliza, Jane and Mary. Daughter Anna Starr was given a set of silver teaspoons, daughter Sarah Ann, a Bible, and the 3 grandchildren -- John, Sarah and Elizabeth Kirby -- children of deceased daughter Amy Kirby, were each to have a Bible. Each of the unmarried daughters were to have a home with their mother or their brother as long as they remained single.
