    Born in North Stonington, Conn about 1786, son of Jonas Hewitt and Temperance Smith; died in North Stonington, 31 Aug 1862, age 76 (tombstone). John married MARY HILLARD. Mary was born in Conn. about 1788, daughter of William Hillard and Mary (Peckham) Brumley; she died in North Stonington, 21 Feb 1855, age 67 years (tombstone). Both John and Mary were buried in the Hewitt Cemetery at Stonington, Conn.
    John served as a drummer during the War of 1812. He helped defend against the attach on Stonington by the British fleet in Aug 1814. A war memorial marker placed in the Hewitt Cemetery on his grave states that he served in Capt. Asa A. Swan's co. of the 30th Conn. Regiment.
    Mary Hewitt, John's wife, signed an affidavit 29 Aug 1839, in New London, Conn. testifying that her mother, Mary, was the widow of William Bromley who served in the Revolutionary War and who died at White Plains, NY, 18 Sep 1779, during the war. The widow Mary Bromley married 2nd, William Hillard in 1786 (Rev. War Pension #W21324). She lived with her daughter Mary Hewitt, wife of John S. Hewitt, in New London, Conn. in 1839.
    John and Mary resided in North Stonington, Conn. until sometime before 1832, when they were living in New London, Conn. John operated a shoe store in New London. They returned to live in North Stonington after 1850.
    On 15 Apr 1861, John drew up his will which was probated 17 Nov 1862 (North Stonington Probate Records, Vol. 2, pp. 76-80). His wife and son had predeceased him so he left his real estate and personal property to his daughter Mary, widow of Capt. Robert Frink, and to her daughter, Ann M. Frink. John also left legacies of $100 to his grandchildren: Emily A. Williams, John F. Hewitt, Ann M. Frink and Louisa Frink.  He gave granddaughter, Augusta Eulestine, the use of his farm for her natural life, and then to her son, John W. Eulestine, forever. John Sheffield and Ann M. Frink were named executors of the estate.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., 23 Jun 1766 (Bible), son of Simeon Hewitt and Rachel Geer; died in Ledyard, Conn., 10 Jul 1843, age 78 years (Bible & tombstone). Simeon married MAHALA HEWITT (#174), 18 Jan 1787, at Stonington, Conn. (Rev. War Pension). Mahala was born in Stonington, 2 May 1767 (Bible), daughter of Henry Hewitt (#56) and Sarah Kenney; she died in Ledyard, Conn. 29 Jul 1847, age 80 years (Bible & tombstone). Both she and Simeon were buried in the Gates Cemetery at Preston, Conn.
    When he was not yet 16 years old, Simeon served as a substitute for his father in Conn. Line during the Revolutionary War. The length of his service is not known but he applied for a pension based on his military service 18 Aug 1832, while living in Preston, Conn. Mahala applied for a widow's pension 8 Aug 1843, and was granted one of $55 per year (Rev. War Pension #W25766)
    Simeon and Mahala resided in Stonington, Conn. until 1808, when they went to Preston, Conn. where they remained most of their married life. Shortly before their deaths, they were living in Ledyard, Conn at the home of their daughter, Phebe Bedant, where they both died.
    No probate records have been found for Simeon Hewitt but Mahala's estate was administered by her son-in-law, Jesse Bedant, on 6 Sep 1847 (Ledyard Probate Records, docket $468). She left 4 children still living; Polly Gates, Simeon Hewitt of Preston, Conn. Phebe Bedant of Ledyard, Conn., and Charles E. Hewitt of New London, Conn.

960. Aaron HEWITT (Simeon HEWITT , Elkanah HEWITT , Benjamin HEWITT , Hannah PALMER , Walter ) was born about 1770 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. He died before 1840 in Augusta, Oneida Co., New York.

    Born in Rhode Island or Conn. about 1770, son of Simeon Hewitt and Rachel Geer. He died before 1840, probably in Augusta, Oneida Co., NY where he was residing in 1830. Aaron married but nothing is known of his wife except that she was born between 1774 and 1784.
    As a young man, Aaron left Conn. and went to Washington Co., NY before 1800. He was in Hartford, NY with his young family in 1800 and 1810.
    Sometime before 1820, he moved to Whitestone, Oneida Co., NY and then to the Village of Augusta.
    Aaron bought land in Washington Co. from Samuel and Mary Love on 26 Aug 1808 (Washington Co. Land Records, Book I, p. 343). There were no records of sales of land for Aaron in the grantor index of Washington Co., NY.
    Very little is known of this family. Aaron and his wife had 4 sons and 5 daughters. By 1810, they had 2 sons born 1794-1800, one son born 1800-1810, and 4 daughters born 1800-1810. Later they had a son and daughter born 1810-1820. Only one of the children is known by name, Aaron, Jr., b. 1794-1800, who enlisted in the NY Militia as a private during the War of 1812, in Pliny Adam's regiment.
    Note: Wheeler, in the HISTORY OF STONINGTON, says this man's name was Abel rather than Aaron.

    Born in Rhode Island, 25 Mar 1773 (tombstone), son of Simeon Hewitt and Rachel Geer. He died in Grafton, Rensselaer Co., NY, 30 Oct 1859 (tombstone). Ziba married TACY CRANDALL. Tacy was born in Dutchess Co., NY about 1774, the daughter of Samuel Crandall. She died in Grafton, NY between 1850 and 1855. Both were buried in the family burial grounds on their farm in Grafton, NY The stone marker for Tacy is unreadable.
    Ziba was a farmer. He and Tacy resided in Grafton (originally part of Petersburg), Rensselaer Co., NY from before 1800 until their deaths. The first record of Ziba purchasing land in Grafton was on 20 Mar 1827. He last sold property there, 17 Jul 1852. Land in Dutchess Co., NY was deeded to Tacy and Ziba in 1828, from the estate of Tacy's father, Samuel Crandall.
The Hewitts never lived on that land.
    Ziba was active in his community. He attended the first town meeting in Grafton in April 1807, and was selected assessor and put on the jury roll.
    He was elected Supervisor of Grafton numerous times -- 1809-1817, 1819-1823, 1829-1832, and in 1839.
    The New York State census for 1855, lists Ziba was a widowed farmer.
    His farm in Grafton consisted of 82 acres. No probate records for Ziba or Tacy have been found, and only a few cemetery records have been located in Grafton.

    Born in Stonington, Conn. about 1776 (Mayflower Data), son of Simeon Hewitt and Rachel Geer. He died in Cleveland, Cuyahga Co., Ohio, 6 Oct 1859, age 83 years (Mayflower Data). Isaac married LYDIA LATHROP in 1805, at Preston, Conn. (Mayflower Data). Lydia was born in Preston, Conn about 1780 (Mayflower Data), daughter of Dixwell Lathrop and Rebecca Rogers. She died in Cleveland, Ohio, 18 Oct 1845, age 65 years (Mayflower Data).
    Isaac and Lydia resided in Hebron, Washington Co., NY after their marriage. Their first 3 children were born there. Isaac was a member of the Hebron Masonic Lodge in 1813. About that same year, Isaac moved his family to Beeksmantown, Clinton Co., NY where he had a small farm and operated a licensed inn. He and Lydia joined the Beeksmantown Presbyterian Church in 1816. By 1830, the family had moved a few miles south to the town of Plattsburg, Clinton Co., NY, and sometime before 1840, they left the area for Ohio City, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio (later part of Cleveland, Ohio). Isaac spent his last years living with his sons, Dr. Morgan L. Hewitt and Isaac L. Hewitt in Cleveland.

    Born in Canterbury, Wickham Co., Conn., 5 Jun 1765 (VR), son of Increase Hewitt and Elizabeth Tyler. He died in Center Rutland, Rutland Co., Vermont, 16 Jun 1833 (tombstone) and buried in the Center Rutland Cemetery. Amos married SARAH REYNOLDS, 8 Apr 1794, at Rutland, VT (Swan). Sarah was born in New York State about 1774, daughter of Jonathan and Rebekah Reynolds. She died in Riley Township, St. Claire Co., Michigan, 18 Apr 1859, age 85 years (tombstone). She was buried in the Memphis Cemetery in Macomb, Michigan.
    With his father and brothers, Amos left Canterbury, Conn. and settled in Pomfret, Windsor Co., Vermont in 1789. A few years later, he moved to the town of Rutland, VT. Amos was a farmer. He and Sarah raised a large family on their farm in Rutland. Amos's will dated 30 May 1833 and proven 1 Aug 1833 (Rutland Co., VT Probate Book 15, p. 350). Ref. Eugene D. Larson of 19175 Warwick Drive, Beverly Hills, Michigan 48025. After Amos died, Sarah went to live with some of her children in Michigan in 1837.

    Born in Canterbury, Windham Co., Conn., 18 Aug 1768 (VR), son of Increase Hewitt and Elizabeth Tyler. He died in Pomfret, Windsor Co., Vermont, 13 Jun 1801 (VR), age 32 years. Daniel married KATHERINE ____ about 1789. Nothing is known of Katherine except that she was the mother of all of the children of Daniel. Left a young widow with 5 children under 12 years, Katherine probably married again.
    Daniel went to Vermont with his father and brothers about 1789. He and Katherine resided in Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont after their marriage. They lived there from 1790 to 1801, when he became ill, and they moved to Pomfret, Vermont to be near his parents.

Daniel married Catherine PALMER, daughter of William PALMER and Mary BROWN. Catherine was born 20 Nov 1772 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 23 Oct 1813 in Lansingburgh, New York.

    I have in my files a Katherine Hewitt naming the SAME children in her will.  At the time of her will in 1813 she was called the relict of the Late Dr. Daniel Hewitt of Claredon, Vermont.  The will was written on November 10, 1813 in Lansingburgh, New York.  Her step father, Wait Rathbone, was a witness to her inventory.  (Book 4 Page 397 file 231  Rensselear County, NY Surrogate Records.
     She was Catherine Palmer, born November 20, 1772 in Stonington, Connecticut (Book 3 Page 24) and died in Lansingburgh, NY  October 23, 1813 (Lansingburgh, NY Gazette  October 29, 1813  Obit)  She was the daughter of William and Mary (Brown) Palmer.  Catherine was raised in Stonington, Connecticut and in Lansingburgh, New York where her mother has moved with her step-father, Wait Rathbone.

    Born in Canterbury, Windham Co., Conn., 11 Dec 1772 (VR), son of Increase Hewitt and Elizabeth Tyler. His date and place of death are unknown. Increase married CLARINDA CUTLER, 19 May 1792, at Lisbon, Conn (Bailey). Clarinda was born in Conn., 7 Feb 1777 (Cutler)in Hanover, Conn., daughter of Daniel Cutler and Betsey Fitch. She died in Scotland, Windham Co., Conn., 12 Sept 1849, age 72 years (tombstone) and was buried in the Scotland Cemetery.
    Increase and Clarinda resided in Sprague, Conn. where their children were born. Clarinda filed for a divorce for Increase on the grounds of desertion and adultery. The divorce was granted 11 Dec 1816 (Knox and Ferris). Increase seemed to have vanished from the records after 1810.
    Clarinda lived in the Scotland-Windham area of Conn. where she raised her children. She did not remarry.
