DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 37.
Born in Canaan, Litchfield Co., Conn., 5 Dec 1750 (VR), son of Ephraim Hewitt and Mary Randall; died after Aug 1820, probably in Concord (now Day), Saratoga Co., NY. Asa married MAHALEY ____. Nothing is known of this lady, she may have been a 2 nd wife. She and Asa were members of the Baptist Church of Northville in 1815 and 1816.
Asa served during the Revolutionary War as a private in the New York militia in Col. Van Veghten's regiment. He also served in the Albany Co. militia (Saratoga District) under Col. John McCrea in 1778. There is no record of Asa having applied for a pension on his own service, but he did sign a deposition for his brother, Joseph Hewitt, on 23 Aug 1820, attesting to their having served during the war. Asa was a resident of Saratoga Co., NY when he signed the deposition.
After the war, Asa settled in Stillwater, Albany Co. (now Saratoga Co.), NY sometime before 1790. He later moved to Edinburg in that county. Asa sold his land in Edinburg to his son, David Hewitt, on 23 Jun 1815 (Book C, p. 310) and moved to Concord (now Day) in Saratoga Co., NY.
Not all of the children in this family are known. The 1790 NY census records indicate there were 3 sons and 3 daughters in Asa's household. There were other children born after that year. No probate or cemetery records have been found for Asa or Mahaley.
Note: Another daughter may have been Hannah Hewitt, b. c. 1780, in NY, who m. Robert Scribner, 19 Jun 1798, at Christ Church, Ballston Spay, NY (CR); she died 10 Sep 1862 (tombstone), and was buried in Northville, NY at Main Street Cem.

Mary Randall: died sometime after 1830, probably in Edinburg, Saratoga Co., NY. Joseph married HESPIBAH WHITING, 2 Dec 1783, at New Marlborough, Berkshire Co., Mass. (VR). Hepsibah was born about 1762; she died in Edinburg, NY sometime after 1820. There is very little information on this lady.
Joseph enlisted in 1775 as a private from Canaan, Conn. in Capt. Herman Allen's company of Rangers, Col. Seth Warner's regiment during the Revolutionary War. He served in the Northern Campaign for 3 months. In 1776, at New Marlborough, Mass., he joined Capt. Enoch Noble's co., Col. Brower's regt. for 4 months, and in Feb 1778, he enlisted from New Marlborough in Capt. Giles Galon's co., Col. Joseph applied for a government pension for his military service on 8 May 1818, at age 64 years. His brothers, Asa and John Hewitt, attested for him. Joseph stated in his application that he was a resident of Edinburg, NY, and because of a disability, he was no longer able to pursue his trade of pail maker. His family at that time consisted of his wife, Hepsibah, who was 56 years old and sick, and an adopted daughter named Charlotte who was 14 years old. Joseph was granted a pension.
The 1790 and 1800 census indicated that Joseph and Hepsibah had only one son. They adopted daughter Charlotte was still in their household at the time of the 1820 census but nothing is known of her later life. No probate or cemetery records have been found for Joseph or Hepsibah.

They left Canaan on 2 Mar 1776 and marched to Lower Canada to reinforce General Montgomery's troops in Quebec. At a place called Cedars, the brothers were captured by a party of British and Indians on 19 May 1776. John was released 9 days later but Randall was detained as a prisoner in Canada for over 5 years. He was recaptured by an Oneida scout while on an errand in the woods and taken to Albany, NY.     The census records indicated that Philander and his 1st wife, Sybbell, had at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. There were no known children of Philander and the 2nd wife, Phebe.
Philander and Phebe sold property in Edinburg in 1831 and again in 1837. They were still residing in Beecher's Hollow in 1840. No probate records have been found for Philander or his wives.

Born in Stonington, Conn., 10 Mar 1776 (VR), son of Israel Hewitt and Tabitha Wheaton; died in Towanda Township, Bradford Co., Pa. in 1815 (Bradford Co. Probate Records. Burdon married EUNICE ____. Little is known of this lady except that she was the mother of his children, probably married in Conn., and she was still living on 30 Dec 1815, when she signed off on her dower rights in Towanda, Pa. (Bradford Co. Probate Records). No cemetery markers have been found for Gurdon or Eunice Hewitt.
Gurdon was 15 years old when his father died in Stonington, Conn. and left a will stating that Gurdon was "to be put to a suitable trade". When he became age 25, Gurdon was to inherit money in the amount of 10 pounds. The court appointed his sister Nancy's husband, George Williams, to be Gurdon's legal guardian while he was a minor (Stonington Probate Records, docket #1624).
Gurdon and Eunice were living in New London, Conn. in 1790, with 2 young sons. In 1796, they left Conn., accompanying his brother, Dudley and family, for Chenango Co., NY. They first settled in the town of Norwich and later moved to a farm in Oxford, NY. Gurdon purchased and sold a number of parcels of property from 1797 to 1811, and became prosperous. He was on the board of trustees of the Oxford Academy in 1809. At one time, he owned a tavern at Fort Hill near Oxford.
When a friend defaulted on a note which Gurdon had co-signed, he was obligated to make good. This ruined him financially. Gurdon sold what property he could and left Oxford to start over in Bradford Co., Pa. He moved his family to Monroe, Pa. where he became a lumberman in 1811. For a while, before his early death, he operated a sawmill near Towanda, Pa.
Gurdon died interstate. On 30 Dec 1815, the widow Eunice renounced her dower claim to any real estate of her deceased husband, and requested that son, Gurdon Hewitt, Jr., act on her behalf. A Letter of Administration was granted to Gurdon, Jr. the same day, to settle his father's estate (Bradford Co. Probate Records, docket #40, Book 1, p. 12). On 14 Feb 1816, Gurdon, Jr. Posted a $1000 bond with the court. A Letter of Administration was also issued to Gurdon, Jr. in Chenango Co., NY on 3 July 1816, to settle the father's estate of property still owned in Chenango County (Chenango Co. Probate Records, Book A, p. 103).
Eunice died a few years after her husband, in Towanda, Pa. Gurdon Hewitt, Jr. made a deposition on 22 May 1819, to the court stating that his father and mother were both deceased and that they left only 2 children then living, himself and Calvin Hewitt, who was still a minor. Silas Marsh of Oxford, NY, a son-in-law of the deceased couple, also signed a deposition dated 2 July 1819 (Chenango Co. Probate Records).
