Dethick and Elizabeth lived in Stonington, Conn. for a short time after their marriage before joining a group of Connecticut families taking up land in the Wyoming Valley before 1776. This area was claimed by both Penn. and Conn. until the dispute was resolved by Congress in 1782. Dethick settled his family along the Susquehanna River in the Kingston District of the Town of Westmoreland in then Litchfield Co., Conn. He was listed on the tax rolls of Kingston from 1776 to 1778.
At the time of the Revolutionary War, Dethick commanded a small company of men recruited in 1776, to defend the Wyoming Valley. He was commissioned a captain in the Continental Army by order of Congress in March 1778. Captain Hewitt led his company of scouts up the Susquehanna River on 26 Mar 1778, and returned 4 days later with the report of a large party of Indians advancing toward the Wyoming Valley. On 3 Jul 1778, the Indians overran the American troops in fierce fighting during which Dethick was killed. His father-in-law, Constant Searle, was also killed in the battle.
Dethick died without a will. Benjamin Carpenter administered his estate on 27 Jan 1789. An accounting was filed at the Register's office in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 6 Oct 1782 (Egle). The 3 children of Dethick and Elizabeth, as his heirs, sold 3000 acres of land granted to their father in Braintrim Township, Northumberland Co. (now Luzerne Co.), Pa. On 5 Jan 1795 (Blair).

Born in Stonington, Conn., 16 Oct 1761 (Cem. Rec.), baptized 2 May 1762, at the Strick Congregational Church of Stonington, son of Walter Hewitt and Elizabeth Dethick; died in Keepville, Erie Co., Penn., 5 Jul 1824 (Cem. Rec. & Hewit). Asa married MARY NEWTON on 23 Nov 1786, Stafford, Tolland Co., Conn. at the 1st Congregational Church (CR). Mary was born in Stonington, Conn., 12 Dec 1767 (VR), daughter of Moses Newton and Persis Bellows; she died in Keepville, Pa., 26 Feb 1838 *Hewit). Both Asa and Mary were buried in the Keepville Cemetery.
A note on the records of the Keepville Cemetery says, "Asa Hewit, born 16 Oct 1761; and died 5 July 1824, Revolutionary War Soldier, known to have been buried here but no marker." The Connecticut Revolutionary Rolls show that Asa served in Capt. Titus Watson's company, Col. Charles Brewell's battalion of the Conn. militia.
Asa and Mary resided in Stafford, Conn after their marriage until about 1805, when they moved to Oneida Co., NY and settled in the Town of Paris for a few years. By the end of the War of 1812, they were in Orwell, Oswego Co., NY where Asa was active in civic affairs. He was elected Assessor and served as Inspector of Schools. Shortly after 1820, the family continued westward and settled in Keepville, Erie Co., Penn. where they remained.
A family history of son, Daniel Hewitt, written in 1898, by his great grandson, Loren Morgain Hewit, stated that Daniel and his father Asa enlisted at the time of the War of 1812. Asa would have been 51 years old. His sons, Walter, Daniel, Parley and Asa, did serve during that war but it is doubtful that the father Asa participated in the War of 1812.

Later, he enlisted in Capt. Christopher Palmer's co., Col. Fitch's regiment of Conn. militia, 24 March to 22 Nov 1760. Oliver enlisted for a brief period in 1776, during the Revolutionary War, while living at Stephentown, NY. He was private in Capt. Turner's co., Col. Van Rensselaer's regt. of New York militia. Oliver's eldest son, James Hewitt, enlisted before his 15th birthday in the same company as his father.
Oliver and Sarah resided in Stonington, Conn. for a few years after their marriage and then they moved to Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY prior to 1776. By 1790, they had settled in Ballstown, Albany Co., NY now known as Greenfield, Saratoga Co. Oliver was elected constable of Greenfield in 1792. The US Census for 1790-1810, indicates that Oliver and Sarah had at least 6 sons and 2 daughters. There may have been others.
No probate records of cemetery records have been found for either Oliver or his wife Sarah.

534. Amos HEWITT (Abijah HEWITT , Ann PALMER , Gershom , Walter ) was born about 1752 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. He died in the sea.

DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 63.
Born in Stonington, Conn about 1752, son of Abijah Hewitt and Mary _____; died at sea, probably during the Revolutionary War. Amos married ANNA MINER, 19 Mar 1775, at the 2nd Church of Christ, North Stonington, Conn. (CR). Anna was born in Stonington, 22 Jul 1754 (VR), daughter of Simeon Miner and Ann Hewitt (#41); she died in Charlton, Saratoga Co., NY, 29 Mar 1839, age 84 years (tombstone) and was buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Charlton, NY.
After her husband's early death, Anna and her son, Amos, Jr., went to Cayuga Co., NY before 1795. The son apparently died as a young man in Cayuga Co. Anna then went to live with her brother-in-law, Thomas Hewitt (#114), and his family. She remained with them the rest of her life and was living with them in Broadalbin, Montgomery Co., NY, and later n Charlton, Saratoga Co., NY, where she died at their home. Thomas, in his will written 9 Jan 1837, provided for his wife and for his sister-in-law, Anna Hewitt, the rest of their natural lives (Saratoga Co. Probate Records, Book 13, pp. 463-466).
Wheeler, in his book, THE HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN., p. 423, incorrectly identified Anna's husband as Amos (#66), the son of Henry Hewitt and Joanna Denison, but that Amos Hewitt died at Canterbury, Conn., 17 May 1753, at age 16 years, and was buried in the Old Weaver Cemetery in Canterbury (VR and tombstone). Wheeler stated that Anna's husband was lost at sea and the widow went to Cayuga Co., NY to live with her son, Amos, Jr. but she didn't stay long and then went to live with her husband's brother, Thomas Hewitt, until her death many years later. Other authors of genealogies, which mention this Anna Miner, who married Amos Hewitt, such as John Augustus Miner in his book, THOMAS MINOR AND HIS DESCENDANTS, p. 78 have perpetuated the Wheeler error.

Born in Stonington, Conn., 22 May 1756 (Rev. War Pension File), son of Abijah Hewitt and Mary _____; died in Charlton, Saratoga Col., NY, 26 Sep 1841, in his 86th year (tombstone). Thomas married SARAH HEWITT (#270).
Sarah was born in Conn. about 1775, daughter of Richard Hewitt (#88) and Experience Leeds; she died in Carlton, NY, 25 Feb 1860, in her 85th year (tombstone). Both she and Thomas were buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Charlton.
Thomas enlisted in the Conn. Line in 1776 from Stonington during the Revolutionary War. He later served in the Sea Service in the same war. Sarah applied for a widow's pension on her husband's service record in 1852 but the government rejected her claim (#R4939).
The pension application listed the 8 children still living who were born to Thomas and Sarah. It stated that soon after the war, Thomas left Conn. and moved to Milton, Saratoga Co., NY where he resided for 8 years before going to Genoa, Cayuga Co., NY in 1792. Thomas returned to Saratoga co. about 1803 to live in Ballston for a few years. The family then settled in West Galway, Broadalbin, Montgomery Co., NY where they remained until 1832. In their old age, Thomas and Sarah moved to Charlton, Saratoga Co., to be near their son, Amos.
Sarah was mentioned in her father's will, dated 20 Feb 1819, at Milton, NY as being the wife of Capt. Thomas Hewitt. Thomas was named as one of the executors of Richard Hewitt's estate (Saratoga Co. Probate Records, Book 6, p. 442).
A farmer and miller, Thomas had 95-acre farm in Broadalbin. He also owned and operated a gristmill on Hewitt's Pond on his property. He was well respected, active in community affairs, a captain in the local militia, and an elder of the 1st Presbyterian Church of West Galway. The church records listed the dates of birth for Thomas and Sarah's children when they were baptized.
Thomas wrote his will 9 Jan 1837, and it was probated 2 Jul 1845 (Saratoga Co. Probate Records, Book 13, pp. 463-466). The will provided for his wife Sarah and for his sister-in-law, Anna (Miner) Hewitt, widow of Amos Hewitt, during their natural lives. Half of all the real estate, plus 2 cows, a hog and all the household furniture, were to be theirs. If the property bequeathed to Sarah and Anna was not sufficient to support them, son Amos was to have their 1/2 of the real estate. Amos was given the other 1/2 of all real estate and personal property after he paid $150 to each of Thomas' daughters who were not married at the time of Thomas' death -- Maria, Melissa, Eliza, Jane and Mary. Daughter Anna Starr was given a set of silver teaspoons, daughter Sarah Ann, a Bible, and the 3 grandchildren -- John, Sarah and Elizabeth Kirby -- children of deceased daughter Amy Kirby, were each to have a Bible. Each of the unmarried daughters were to have a home with their mother or their brother as long as they remained single.
