DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 15.
Born in Stonington, Conn., 20 March 1710 (VR), son of Benjamin Hewitt and Ann Palmer; died after 3 March 1786, probably in Stillwater, Saratoga Co., NY. Walter married 1st. HEPSIBAH _____, about 1731. Hepsibah, wife of Walter Hewitt, renewed the covenant at the 2nd Church of Christ, North Stonington, Conn. on 16 June 1742; she died before Dec. 1746.
Walter married 2nd, ELIZABETH DETHICK, 25 Dec. 1746 (CR), at Stonington. Elizabeth was born in Stonington, 17 Dec 1721 (VR), daughter of John Dethick and Susannah Ranson; it is not known when or where she died.
Most of Walter's life was spent in the Stonington area. While he and his 1st wife, Hepsibah, renewed the covenant at Rev. Joseph Fish's 2nd Church of Christ, North Stonington in 1742, none of their children were recorded as being baptized there. Walter had a long association with the Congregational Church of Stonington. When Rev. Christopher Avery established the Strick Congregational Church of Stonington in `1746, Walter was chosen a Deacon and leader of that church on 27 Nov 1746. He held that position for over 20 years. The last time he was mentioned in the church records was 20 Dec 1769, but the pages of the records are missing for the next 17 years.
In 1761, Walter inherited 62 acres of land in Stonington from his father. The land was to be Walter's for his lifetime and then pass to his 4 eldest sons - Walter, Jr., Richard, Benjamin and Gershom. The property was sold by agreement of the 5 parties to Charles Phelps, Esq. of Stonington in 1786 (Stonington Land Records, Vol. 11, p. 29). Gershom and Benjamin Hewitt signed the deed on 15 April 1785 in Canaan, Conn. Walter and his sons, Walter, Jr. and Richard Hewitt, signed the deed 3 March 1786, at Stillwater, Albany Co., (now Saratoga Co.) New York.
The sons, Walter, Jr., Benjamin and Gershom, moved to Canaan, Litchfield Co., Conn. about the year 1766. Walter and the other members of his family may have followed them to Canaan before resettling in Stillwater, NY. Only Benjamin and Gershom stayed in Canaan to raise their families, the rest went to New York or Penn. It isn't known when Walter settled in Stillwater, NY, however, he was there by March 1786, when he signed the deed of land sale.
Wheeler, in THE HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN., has omitted Walter's first wife, Hepsibah, and the children born to them. The American Genealogist, Vol. 39, p. 173 and Vol. 44, p. 79, carried a discussion by researchers as to the parents of Hepsibah. It seems most likely that she was the daughter of Richard Stephens and Sarah Harker, whose daughter Hepsibah was born in Stonington, Conn., 25 July 1712 (VR). No proof has been found to confirm this supposition.

There was a Susannah Hewitt in the 1800 U.S. census listed in New London County, Conn. who was over 45 years old. This may have been the widow of Nathan Hewitt.
Very little information has been found on this family. Nathan was living in Stonington when his last child, Lucy, was born in 1758. He was mentioned in his father's will, which was written on 3 Jan 1760. No probate records or Cemetery records have been found for Nathan or his wives in the Stonington area. He may have moved to another location. Nothing is known of the children of Nathan other than the record of their births in the Stonington Town Records with the exception of the marriage of the daughter Lucy to William Baker in 1781.

Born in Stonington, Conn., 6 Sep 1714 (VR), son of Benjamin Hewitt and Ann Palmer; died sometime after 8 Mar 1774, when he sold land to his son Elijah in Stonington. Jepthia married MARY YORK at the 2nd Church of Christ, North Stonington, Conn., 31 Jan. 1733/4 (CR). Mary was born in Stonington, 17 Aug 1716 (VR), daughter of Thomas York and Mary Brown; date and place of her death are unknown.
Jepthia was of Stonington, Conn. when he purchased 100 acres of land in Hopkinton, RI from Abraham and Silence Guile of Preston, Conn., 10 Mar 1757. A year later, in Feb. 1758, Jepthia and Mary sold the land to Samuel Button of Hopkinton, RI and purchased land in Stonington from Ebenezer Worden.
The first 5 children of Jepthia and Mary were baptized at the 2nd Church of Christ, North Stonington, Conn., 6 Sept 1741 (CR), the same day their mother Mary was baptized as an adult. When the Revolutionary War began, some of Jepthia's sons were living in Stephentown, Albany Co. (now Rensselaer Co.), NY. It is likely that Jepthia and his family may have resettled there. The 1790 U.S. census lists a Jepthia Hewit with one female in Stephentown, NY but the ages are not given. No probate or cemetery records have been found for Jepthia or his wife, Mary.

The probate court appointed Moses Parker of Preston, Conn, on 20 Apr 1763, to administer Jebez's estate (Norwich Probate Records, docket #5204). Among the list of persons to whom Jabez owed money were: Deborah Hewitt, now Deborah Lewis and Reuben Hewitt.
