944. Edward BLIVEN was born 1674 in Scotland. He died 1718 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. Edward married Isabel MACOONE on 31 Oct 1691 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. [Parents]

DESCENDANTS OF EDWARD BLIVEN, by Earl Crandall, page 1.
The immigrant Bliven ancestors were three brothers: Joshua, James and Edward Bliven, all coming from England and arriving in Salem, Massachusetts before 1650.
According to this account, James remained in Salem, Edward's whereabouts are not mentioned, and Joshua is reported as being in Newport by 1669, and it is mentions that his sons, James and Edward, both settled in Westerly, RI.
This "history" of the Bliven family is, unfortunately, not documented, yet has been copied by many genealogists since 1908 and perpetrated as truth. There is, however, no proof for this origin of the Bliven family. Therefore, this lineage begins with Edward-1 Bliven of Westerly, RI.

THE BLIVEN GENEALOGY, 1643-1991, by Lee A. Bliven, 1991. Westerly Library, page 7.
If the dates I have for our first known ancestors are fairly accurate the first would be EDWARD, aka EDWARD of WESTERLY, born about 1668. "THE FIRST FAMILIES OF AMERICA" has his father, born 1643 in England and coming to the Salem area in 1664, this could be JAMES, that bought land from the Indians at Oyster Bay L.I. in 1672, it could also make HENRY BLETHEN (BLEVIN) of Lynn, Mass., (first recorded 1659) a brother of JAMES, the 1668 birth of Edward would have him born in the Colonies.
Edward Bliven and Isabel Macoone had 2 daughters and 3 sons after their marriage Oct. 2, 1691, they were to accumulate some 300 plus acres of land and a Homestead, at Westerly. R.I. and it appears Edward and Isabel became quite active in the community. Edward made a will before his death in 1718, dividing the property among their 3 son.

STILLMAN GENEALOGY, page 1 & 2.

NEW LONDON COUNTY, PROM. MEN, page 725.
George (2), born 1686, married Deborah Crandall in 1710, was an able physician and a large land-owner. He was an earnest Christian, a Seventh-day Baptist, the first of his name holding that day. He had six children.

THE STILLMAN FAMILY, Compiled by Francis D. Stillman, Jr., 1989.
Dr. George Stillman was born in EN in 1679. He was educated and apprenticed to the trade of a tailor, but not liking it, he studied medicine, and became known as Doctor Stillman. He probably joined his father at Hadley MA about 1700 and with the family moved to Wethersfield CT. We shortly after find him at Westerly, RI where he was made a freeman. Prof. Thomas B. Stillman relates that "George Jr. on a journey from Wethersfield to Boston, passed through the town of Westerly, RI, the seat of a Society of Sabbatarians, who observed the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath, and he was much suprised to see the people busy at their work on Sunday and throught they must be a very duluded set. Upon his return from Boston, he throught he would stop at Westerly and enquire into the matter. Accordingly, he had an interview with their pastor, Elder Thomas Hiscox, but instead of convincing them of error, he became himself convinced and took up his abode with them."
He married in Westerly in 1706 Deborah Crandall. He purchased a large tract of land in Westerly, situated in a bend of the Pawcatuck River, where he settled after his marriage and practiced madicine. He was a member of the Westerly Baptist Church and he was Clerk of the church for over 30 years. He seems to have kept up his acquaintance with Wethersfield as he traded several times with that community. There are several records of visits interchanged between the Stillman "cuzins" of Westerly and Wethersfield. Dr. George died in 1760.

Oliver was a minor, Apr. 21, 1698, at which time he chose his brother, Capt. James, as gardian.
On Nov. 25, 1715, Oliver gave a mortgage on one hundred and thirty acres of land for 100 lbs. currency, which he borrowed from the Colony of Rhode Island, without interest. A month earlier his brother James had borrowed 300 lbs. under similar conditions, fully described in his biography.
Oliver was admitted a freeman May 1, 1716. He was Deputy from Westerly to the General Assembly in 1730, '34, '37, '38, '52. (C.R. of R.I., vol. v.) For a large part of his life public records refer to him as "Col. Oliver Babcock." At a meeting of the General Assembly held at Warwick, RI, on the second Monday of August, 1735, Capt. Oliver Babcock was appointed on of a committee "for creating a new harbor in Westerly by turning the Pawcatuck River into the largest salt pond along the Westerly shore, so that said pond would become a very commodious and navigable harbor, and would likewise be very convenient for catching and making codfish".
Mar 19 1757, Hopkinton was set off from Westerly and Col. Oliver Babcock's home was in the new town. He was probably ninety years old at the time of his death in 1773.
