OLD HOMES IN STONINGTON CT, by Grace Denison Wheeler, page 220.
At his death (John Breed) it became the property of Mr. Henry Breed, who built the new house now standing, and removed the old one which had stood here so many years.
Mrs. Emily Breed Cleveland describes it as surrounded by pink and white rose bushes and large clusters of lilacs, which gave forth in the spring such an odiferous perfume. At the back of the house stood the tall pear tree and the old pippin apple tree, long since fallen, which yeilded much delicious fruit. The long row of currant bushes by the wall near the old well, with its sweep and moss-covered bucket; the bed of sage in the garden kept free from weeds and cut at intervals, to be dried for the family medicine chest, and in summer the long tables covered with sweet corn, drying out of doors for winter's use, all remain in the memory of those who dwelt there long ago.

THIS IS FAMILY TRADITION AS TOLD BY LILLIAN MAY SCOTT NORMAN.
"Patrick Scott and his oldest son, John and Patrick's brother Owen were the first to come to America. Brother Owen went west and they never heard from him. (Since John died in Scotland, maybe he came to America and went back to Scotland. NAN)
The Patrick Scott family came to America two at a time. They would go to work and save enough money to bring over two more members of the family until all of the family were together in Westerly RI. They came on the boat in the steerage class, because they didn't have the money to come any other way.
They first lived near Burden's Pond on the Bradford Road. When the mother Ellen Nixon Scott came to Westerly, Robert and Peter (sons) bought the home on upper Oak Street next to where the Hill Top Ball Park was. It has been taken down, summer 1985, and rebuilt.
The children of Patrick and Ellen went to the parochial school because it was the only free school in Dalbeattie. Their education was limited, because they started their trade as stone cutters around the age of 9 years and it took 3 years to learn their trade. The average schooling was three years, but they continued their education by themselves. There wasn't a dumb one among them and they were hard workers. When they went to school they would work in the store for a head of cabbage and a soup bone, so their mother could make a soup for the family.
The Scottish people helped each other and when the families would come from Scotland each Scottish family would give them a piece of furniture to furnish their home. They would help the new families until they got on their feet. The families who had an extra room or two would take in boarders.
In those times, Westerly had a number of quarries and Westerly granite was noted all over. It was considered the best granite. A number of quarries were in Westerly. The best known one was Smith's Quarry on Granite Street.
They employed between 400 and 500 workers.
When the quarry workers came to this country, they either came to Westerly or to Barre, Vermont, or to Stony Creek which is past Niantic, Conn.
Most of the stone cutters died of stone cutter's consumption. They breathed all the dust because there wasn't any ventilation. The dust would harden their lungs and they had a hard death.
They worked in a long shed from early morning until 5 or 6 p.m. at night. If they spoiled a stone, they wouldn't be paid for their work."  As told by my Grandmother Lillian May Scott Norman. (NAN)

THE LAKE CITY GRAPHIC September 29, 1916
PIONEER SETTLER DEAD
The death of Samuel Orlando Sewell occured at his home at 212 Chestnut Street in this city Tuesday afternoon, September 26, at two o'clock. He had been in poor health for the past summer, but for the past five weeks he had been ill although not confined to his bed. Death came as he was in the act of walking from one room to another, caused from a complication of diseases and old age.
Samuel Orlando Sewell was born in Kennebec Co., Maine, June 11, 1834. He came West with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Sewell Sr., in 1837. On August 27, 1857 he was married to Miss Philena M. Bates, and in 1858 they settled in Pierce Co., Wisconsin, where they resided until 1881 when Mr. Sewell lost his eye sight, and came to Lake City for treatment. He entirely recovered his sight and they have made Lake City their home since that time.
Three children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Sewell, one daughter having died at the age of seven. Those surviving are Charles Samuel and Mrs. E.M. Chandler both of Minneapolis. Besides the wife and children there are left to morn his loss, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Andrew Reeves of Eagle Wisconsin, and one brother, Frank Sewell of Milwaukee.
Mr. Sewell was at one time a fine mechanic, but of late years has done nothing but repair work. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Rock Elm, Wisc., and transfered his card to the order in this city. He was a very honest, industrious man, having worked up to the age of 81 1/2 years. He never left a dept unpaid and led a clean moral life. Lake City is losing one of its best and worthiest citizens with the passing of Mr. Sewell.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home. Rev. C. H. Miller officiating, the interment being made at Lakewood Cemetery. The family have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.

THE HOMES OF OUR ANCESTORS IN STONINGTON CT, by Grace Denison Wheeler, page224
About halfway between Westerly and Stonington, stands the house owned by Mr. Daniel Brown, and a little to the southeast, we see a gate which leads through a pasture to an old house, built by Mr. James Babcock in 1740, as a board which is over the front door testifies. This James was the son of James and Sarah (Vose) Babcock, who married Phebe Swan in 1730. Their grandson, Elihu Babcock, who married Elizabeth Jefferies, also lived, died and was buried here and his daughter married Joshua Robinson, who lived at this very place for a time, before he built the new house which stood where Mr. Brown's house now stands. This Babcock house was somewhat rebuilt by Mr. Daniel Brown in 1882, but it is still a most quaint looking building, gambrel-roof and shingled on three sides, with only one window in the whole east side. It has a big stone chimney in the middle and the heavy oaken outside door, whose threshold is worn smooth by the many feet which have passed over it during these one hundred and sixty years.
