    Samuel E., the youngest son of Daniel, married Phebe Jane Holmes of Preston in 1895. They were the parents of five sons. They bought a farm on Geer Hill now Route 117 in Ledyard where they first farmed with oxen and developed retail egg, poultry, fruit, vegetable and strawberry route in Norwich, delivering with house and market wagon. The farm business became known as S. E. Holdrideg & Sons.

    My parents were married in 1895 and went to housekeeping in what is now signalled as one of the historical houses in North Stonington. Later they bought what became the Mattern Farm in Preston and then bought a place on Laurel Hill in Norwich where Ray and I were born.
    My father worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 1 year and 9 months when they lived on Laurel Hill. During that period and after moving to Ledyard, my father was a teaching principal in two two-room schools, one out Hamilton Ave. in Norwich and the other in Poquetanuck.
    They bought the Geer Hill Farm in Ledyard and moved there on August 27, 1900. My father wanted to move back into the country. He chose that location principally, he said, because it was near a church and a school.

Samuel married Phebe Jane HOLMES, daughter of Grampa HOLMES and Mr. GRAY, on 27 Mar 1895. Phebe was born 27 Aug 1873 in No. Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 14 Dec 1954 in Ledyard, New London Co., Connecticut.

    She attended the Wheeler High School as a boarding student in North Stonington. I heard a Mrs. Stanton say once that "Jennie" as she was commonly called was always the fun maker of the group. My mother was the youngest of three children, all living at home at the time. Aunt Nellie was the oldest, living at home with her infant son Ernie. Her husband had died suddenly and she had come home to live. There was one brother in between the girls, always a bachelor, by the name of Renny. .
