John CANNEL [scrapbook] was born about 1896 in Port St. Mary, Rushen, Isle of Man. He died 16 Oct 1985 in Colby, Arbory, Isle of Man.

FROM A LETTER WRITTEN TO MRS. L. NORMAN FROM JOHNNY CANNEL DATED MAY 24, 1983.
...My sister came with her husband to visit me for a week. He had recently retired from his job as chief engineer of the oil pipe line that carries the oil over the rockies to the pacific coast from the Alberto prairies. Joyce, my sister, was born in Vancouver, B.C. and is not familar with this part of the world & she is the youngest in our family & I am the eldest, origially there were eight, the inbetweens are all dead now so us two are wondering whom will be the last to go, her or me, she has the advantage being 24 years younger than me...
...I started with a desire for adventure & in a life time found plenty one way or another & managed to survive with all my limbs & senses. Relations well really I am not very well acquainted with all of them of the past. You see I first left the Island when I was five years old. My grandmother (that is my mother's mother) was one of old man Kneens daughters of Lime St. whos husband immigrated to America with the arrangement that he would send for her later, but was never heard from so left a young wife & 3 young children in Port St. Mary.
My mother Annie was one of them, the eldest, who years later married an Isla of Man bank accountant & my mother later when I was five went to live in North Wales just across the water. When he retired, I was sixteen & they desided to go to B.C. Canada & start fruit farming. I had one sister & a brother younger. We went to Okanangan Valley, and land was bought & an orchard planted, but when I was eighteen I left home & started life on my own with no perticular idea of being anything special, that was 1912, 71 years ago.
I started in Caleary Alberto driving a team & waggon, dilivery to building sites for new homes, for a sash & door factory. Then it was farming even had a homestead at that time 50 or 60 miles from the nearest post office. I gave that up as too isolate, a hermite life. War started I joined the army went overseas & was able once again to visit the Isle of Man & that was first when became acqainted with Mable. The war finished I returned to Canada & over the years had all sorts of jobs. Then the second war & back to England again, this time on a bomb rescue squad in London, so I was then well experienced in building & construction & as going into wrecked buildings, one had to be careful as it was possibly might bring sections of the building down on the men working to get the trapped people out. After I returned to Canada. I build a few houses & sold them, then I started the golden years of retirement. Well I just got tired loafing & driving here & there, so I thought I'll go back & live in the Isle of Man & see how I liked it, well that was sixteen years ago & now I have reached a termines, I have no ambition to go any further...
