Memories from a lifeboat family, by Amy Kneen
In 1896 Edward Kneen, by grandfather, was a member of the crew of "James Stevens No. 1", the first lifeboat in Port St. Mary. During his years of service he was joined by three of his brothers, by his son William (my father) and by nephews.
My introduction to a lifeboat was when I was about 4 years old. My grandfather, who had become coxswain in 1916, would sometimes take me with him on one of his regular visits to check that all was well inside the Lifeboat House. I was lifted into the boat as it sat on its high carriage and given some chocolate -- supposedly from "emergency rations" for rescuers and rescued alike -- but perhaps it was from grandfather's pocket!
Traditionally, Port St. Mary Lifeboat Day began with the firing of a rocket to announce that the lifeboat on it carriage would be paraded through the main street to the promenade.
Until 1912, the carriage was drawn by carthouse; in later years the men and boys of the village replaced the horses in a very heavy task.
Lifeboat Day in 1917 was different, my grandfather and my father were with the crew at the boathouse, the usual signalman was absent, so grandfather decided to fire the maroon himself, an action which was to have a tragic result. The rocket, a new type, exploded too soon, and grandfather was killed. Never again was the lifeboat paraded through the village.
