    Reuben Hilliard, when four years old, came to Delhi, Michigan from Pharsalia, New York, where he was raised on a farm. He attended a select school and finished his schooling at the high school in Lansing, Michigan. Reuben began his career as a teacher at the age of eighteen years, his first efforts in this direction being in the country schools of his own township. His winters were occupied to pedagogic work and the summers in the work incident to a farm, in planting, cultivating, and harvesting, for which he had great liking. He finally, however, abandoned country teaching and for at least twenty years was engaged in teaching in the grade schools in different cities.
    Reuben was at first a Democrat, but in later years was affiliated with the members of the Farmer's Alliance; striving to seek for himself, as well as to help his brother farmers do the same, a deeper appreciation among the people at large of importance of the agricultural class. He has several times served as School inspector, and has been the means of bringing about many reforms and much improvements in the county to which he belongs. He was a member of the Disciples Church and is a generous and devoted upholder of the belief and doctrines of that body.
    Reuben was the proprietors of one hundred and forty acres of good land on Section 8, Delhi Township. He removed to Lansing in 1816.
