When Herbert Chandler opened his sparkling new, 125-unit, full service Ramada Inn in late 1971, he unvailed the beginning of yet another chapter in the remarkable story of the Chandler family, one of the true pioneer families of the motel business. For with this property, he took the major portion of his share of the business into a whole new operational realm as far as the family was concerned; that of taking part in a franchise arrangement.
But in the process, he borrowed a leaf from his father's method of operation. He bulldozed a somewhat dated, though currently successful, property to replace it with a sleek, up-to-the-minute one -- something Gilbert Chandler, Sr., had done four times over his extraordinarily successful four decades in the business.
"As soon as the partnership was dissolved," Herbert Chandler said, "I immediately set out to find an available one. I contacted Ramada, Hilton and Sheraton, the only ones without properties in the Tallahassee area.
In the meantime, he had also purchased an additional 1 1/2 acres of land adjoining the Tallahassee Motor Lodge for $22,500, which included 40 feet of frontage. Upon obtaining an agreement with Ramada and putting his plans together, he demolished the 19-year-old facility to make way for the new one.
In the business since boyhood and also a real estate broker and owner of Gulf States Land Co., Herbert Chandler attributes much of his success to what he has learned from his father.
Like his father and Gilbert, Jr., he is, and has been active in several organizations. He has served on the Florida Board of Hotels and Motor Hotels. He is past president of the local Jaycees and is presently a member of the board of directors, Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he belongs to: the Exchange Club, the Elks Club, the Shriners and the American Legion, the Quarterback Club and the 40&8 Chapter of the American Legion.
Besides owning the new property, Herbert Chandler is its general manager. "Overseeing your property this way requires more work and time, but I feel that is absolutely necessary for everything to function as one unit so that you can have flexibilty of being able to replace a department manager if a change is necessary or of being able to correct problems in any area as they develop. I wouldn't under any circumstances, lease out any part of the operation. If you do, you lose control. And if you don't have good food service, for example, it affects the rental of rooms and the image of the property."
The two-story, $1,6-million property, desinged by architect Saxon Poyner, Tallahassee, and featuring the typical Ramada contemporary front and porte conchere with columns and glass fronts, was built by Ferrell Construction Co., Tallahassee. Interiors are of Spanish design in keeping with the Spanish influence in the area's history. Interior decor including both public areas and guest rooms, was handled by Gary Cohen, Equipment Planners, Moline, Ill., who also handled the purchasing of furnishings and equipment.
The property's Royal Scott Dining Room, operated by Bruce Bishop who has 35 years of experience in food preparation, displays Scottish decor and features seafood and steaks. A piano bar is provided for guest entertainment in the Highlands Lounge. The King's English banquet room accommodates up to 130 for banquets and meetings, and can be partitioned off for smaller groups.
Measuring 12x18 feet, guest rooms feature burnt orange and gold color schemes, short shag carpets, vinyl wall covering, two queen-size beds, GE Zone Line combination heating and air-conditioning units, cable color TV, separate dressing areas and plumbing by American-Standard. Rental rates are $13 for singles and $17 for doubles.
To launch this newest motel, the younger Chandler fittingly asked his father to take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremonies during the grand opening, which was well attended by local digintaries and citizens.
