DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 128.
Born in Oppenheim, Montgomery Co. (now Fulton Co.,), NY, 1809, son of Randall Hewitt and Experience Hewitt. He died in Olympia, Thurston Co., Washington, 26 Oct 1891, age 82 years (obit). Christopher married 1st, SALLY ____. They were divorced 22 Feb 1848, at Chancery Court in Geneva, Kate Co., Illinois (Western Christian newspaper). Christopher married 2nd, BETSEY WESSON on 29 Nov 1849, Kane Co., IL. (Marriage Record). Betsey was born in Quebec, Ontario, Canada about 1825. She died in Olympia, Washington between 1889 and 1891. Betsey's parents came from Vermont.
Christopher was a lawyer by profession. He practiced law in Dundee, IL until 1852. Leaving his family in Dundee, he traveled across the country to Milwaukee, Oregon in the Northwest Territory. After a brief stay there, he went to Seattle, Washington where he took a temporary job as a carpenter. He joined the volunteer militia and was a captain during the Indian War of 1855-1856, and led the command which buried the massacred settlers on the White River in Washington. Christopher began his law practice as more settlers arrived in the area.
A warm and personal friend of Abe Lincoln while both were young lawyers in Illinois, Christopher was appointed by President Lincoln as Chief Justice of Washington Territory in 1861, a job he held for 8 years. He established a home in the growing town of Olympia and then returned to Dundee, Ill, in 1862 to bring Betsey and his family to the frontier by covered wagon. When his second term as Chief Justice was over, Christopher retired from public office and presumed his law practice in 1869. He was a respected and successful lawyer in the rapidly settled Northwest. In later life, he took up farming in Olympia, but still retained his active interest in civic affairs. Judge Hewitt was considered the father of the Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows in the State of Washington. He was an involved member of that organization until he died.

BABCOCK AND ALLIED FAMILIES, by M.M. Lewis, Brooklyn, New York. page 14.
Oliver was born in Hopkinton, RI, Dec. 12, 1797, and died at Potter Hill, RI, Sept. 9, 1869. Educated in the schools of his native town, he supplemented his schooling with good reading. As a young man he taught singing school during winter evenings, was an excellent choir singer and acted as chorister in his church for about twenty-five years. When only twelve years of age he was baptized and untied with the First Seventh Day Baptist Church of Hopkinton, with which he remained a member during the rest of his life. He was always deeply interested in the schools of his neighborhood and for many years acted as school trustee, hiring the teachers and always making them welcome guests in his home at the time when "boarding around" was the method of taking care of the teachers during the school terms.
He served his town as justice of the peace of taxes and in various other capacities. By his efforts the Potter Hill post office was established, and he was the first portmaster. About 1824 he entered into partnership with his eldest brother Daniel, for the manufacture of edge tools at Potter Hill, RI, and made the name of D. Babcock & Company upon any tool a sign of real excellence. The partnership continued about fourty years, when the water power was sold to the factory owners at Potter Hill.
In June, 1842, when the Dorr war occurred in RI and the State government and threatened, Mr. Babcock, aas sargeant, "shouldered his musket" and with his brother Daniel, and his own son, Nathan, then a young man less than eighteen years of age went to Providence in the company of Captain William Potter, 3rd Regiment, erd Brigade of State Volunteers, to fight if need be for, "law and order", but no fighting occurred. It is a matter of record that Mr. Babcock was eminently a social, genial man, fond of his family and friends, devoted to his church, a temperance reformer among the first of his town, and an enthusiast in the cause of anti-slavery, though not an adherent of the Abolition party. He was an "all-round, broad-minded man." Previous to his marriage he settled at Potter Hill, RI, where the remainder of his life was spent. His widow, who survived him seventeen years, lived in the same house for sixty-two years. "He was Justice of the Peace of Westerly in 1843, 46, 47, 48." Oliver Babcock married at Stonington, CT., Januaary 11, 1824, Phebe Babcock.
