    Stanton Hewitt was born in 1817, and spent his life on the farm. He married in 1850 Harriet Roy, of Lisbon who was born in 1830. The mother died in 1873, at the age of forty-three, her husband having passed away eleven years previously. He was a Democrat politically, besides serving the town as Selectman many years. He was also elected at different times to both houses of the legislature.

Services were conducted by her pastor Rev. O. D. Fisher who read Scriptures and made an excellent address. Mrs. Thomas B. Hewitt, a close friend and a relative by marriage also spoke, paying tender tribute. Prayer offered by Rev. Lucian Drury, who during the first 3 and a half years of his residence boarded with her. Burial in the Hewitt Cemetery on Norwich Road. Bearers were Frank W. Stolpe, E. Ernest Gray, Ralph P. Wheeler all of North Stonington and Clifton H. Dawley of Preston.

From a July 24, 1964 letter from Delia A. Paterson to Frenando W. Bentley. She was a Hewitt cousin and she and her husband were attorneys in Portland, Oregon.
    "Recently I have read a little from Grandma Jane's diaries, which I have had packed away in a trunk for years. Covers years 1864 before her marriage on May 19th that year, to 1876, date of her death, leaving two little boys, Amos and Perry, my father and uncle, respectively. She seems to have been a jolly, gay, domestic, moody, loyal daughter and sister to brothers William and Charles Edwin. Frequently mentions brother Edwin who "carried" her to the meetings, etc. William never marrried, died at 58 years. Lited at home with them, working around the place and apparently clever with his hands, but not a hand at making money."
    Uncle Perry was a minister, Amos lived in Hampton, Conn. in 1904.
    "The next generation, but one, i.e. Amos Avery's five grandsons being sons of my two sisters, Harriet Middlebrook and Catherine Shaw, are all mechanically inclined, four of them granduated engineers, the fifth taking up architecture now at the University of Oregon, but geing a nut about tinkering with one "bug" or another. Dick Shaw is electrical engineer, has own company "Solid State Instruments, Inc. Precision Instruments for the space Age" in Altadena (Pasadena) making minute instruments for missiles; Bob Shaw is a civil engineer in Portland with Pac. Power & Light Co.; Allan Avery Middlebrook is mechanical engineer with Aeroject Company in Sacamento, California; and last, Roger Middlebrook student in architecturer of the University of Oregon."
