Born in Stonington, Conn., 19 Nov 1755 (Rev. War Pension), son of Edmund Hewitt and Elizabeth ___; died in Galway, Saratoga Co., NY, 7 Sept 1836, in his 81st year (tombstone). Edmund married HANNAH PECKHAM, 8 Mar 1779, at Westerly, RI (VR). Hannah was born in Westerly, RI, 14 Jan 1758 (Peckham), daughter of Isaac Peckham and Mary York; she died in Galway, NY, 2 Nov 1839, in 82nd year (tombstone). Both were buried in the Galway Cemetery, Galway, NY.
Edmund enlisted in April 1775, while living in Stephentown, NY, during the Revolutionary War. He was a private in Capt. George White's company of New York militia. When his enlistment was up that Dec., he joined another company commanded by Capt. Spencer until 13 April 1776. A few days later, he enlisted for 7 1/2 months in Capt. Caleb Bently's company and was stationed at Fort Constitution below Fish Kill, NY until the end of Nov. 1776. Edmund was drafted into Capt. Ichabod Turner's co., Col. Van Schaick's regt. in the spring of 1777 and made an orderly sergeant keeping guard in Saratoga, Fort Ann and Fort Edward. After the defeat of General Buroyne's British troops in Oct. 1777, at Stillwater, Edmund returned home to New London, Conn. There he signed on as a substitute for Christopher Crary in the Conn. militia protecting the fort at New London's Great Neck under General Tyler's command.
Edmund and Hannah resided in New London, Conn. for about 8 years after their marriage. They moved to Hoosick (now Berlin), Rensselaer Co., NY for a year before settling permanently in Galway, Saratoga Co., NY by 1788.
Based on his 2 years of military service, Edmund applied for a pension on 5 Sept 1832, and was given one paying $81.66 per year. On 1 Dec 1838, Hannah applied for a widow's pension which was granted (#W15774). Her application stated that 5 of her 8 children were still living but she failed to mention any of their names except for son, Edmund, Jr. The US Census 1790-1810 indicated that Edmund and Hannah had 5 sons and 3 daughters. Not all of their names are known.
Edmund and Hannah were original members of the 2nd Baptist Church of Galway established in 1790l. Before his death, Edmund sold his land in Galway to son Edmund, Jr. on 8 Feb 1834, for $1500 (Saratoga land Records, Book DD, p. 226) No probate papers have been found for Edmund or Hannah. BRIAN PENDLETON AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1599-1910, Compiled by Everett Hall Pendleton, Privately Printed MCMX, found in the DAR Library, Washington, DC. Page 80.
    42. Simeon-5 Pendleton (Col. Joseph-4, Joseph-3), was born about 1733, at Westerly, RI, and died there in October 1819. Simeon Pendleton was a farmer and lived at Westerly nearly all his life. The Westerly Tax List of 1757 shows that he was assessed two shillings there in that year. On the 24th of February, 1766, the Town Council gave him and his family a certificate of residence to the Selectmen of Stonington, Conn., but it is unlikely that Simeon remained there long, as all his children are recorded at Westerly and no reference appears stating that any of them were born elsewhere.
He was in all probability the Simeon Pendleton who served as private in Capt. Joseph Pendleton's Co., Westerly militia, in 1776, and was appointed Ensign of the 1st Westerly Co., 1st Regt. King's County Militia, in 1777 and 1778, as the other Simeon Pendleton who also lived at Westerly in those years --[221] Simeon-6 -- would more likely be the one who was enrolled in the 3rd Westerly Co., in which were also enlisted a brother and other near relatives of that Simeon.
Simeon-5 Pendleton was one of the executors of the will of his father-in-law, Walter Palmer of Stonington (dated 5 Oct, 1785, proved 3 Jan 1785), and received therefrom the house at Westerly that Palmer bought of Simeon'[s mother. His own will, dated at Westerly, 12 Oct 1819, proved 25 October 1819 (C & P Rec., Vol. 2, p. 331), names daughters Mercy, wife of Joseph Lawton; Bathsheba Babcock; Sally, wife of David Pendleton; Lucretia, wife of Libbeus Pendleton; and son Ethan Pendleton.
Simeon married at Westerly, RI, 15 Jan 1760 (10 January in Stonington Ch. Records.), Mary Palmer, daughter of Walter and Mercy (Hinckley) Palmer. She was baptized at Stonington, 21 March 1742 (Westerly Rec. and "Palmer Groups," page 162).
