				Nancy married (1) Peter AVERY, son of John AVERY and Sarah BELTON, about 1808 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut. Peter was born 10 May 1764 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut. He died 17 Oct 1845 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut. THE GROTON AVERY CLAN, Vol. I, by Elroy McKendree Avery and Catherine Hitchcock (Tilden) Avery, Cleveland, 1912. Found in the DAR Library, Washington DC, page 383.     He was in the battle of Fort Griswold and was taken prisoner and carried to New York. He described the sufferings of the prisoners and often spoke of the relish with which he ate two raw potatoes that he purloined from the basket of an old cook. He became a thrifty farmer and grazier at Groton and traded extensively in stock at the West Indies. He was made lieutenant of the 2d co., 8th regt., Oct, 1801; captain, Nov. 29, 1803 (Ms. State Records, Hartford, Conn.).
