HOLLIS A. ELLIS, Nov. 24, 1954 - Aug. 14, 1998
    LEDYARD - Hollis "Holly" Ann Ellis, 43, of 8 Riverside Place died Friday morning after a long courageous fight with cancer.
    She was born Nov. 24, 1954, in Key West, Fla., a daughter of Frances (Denker) Ellis of Gales Ferry and the late Robert W. Ellis.
    Ms. Ellis returned to Gales Ferry early this year from Annapolis, Md., where she resided on the Severn River.
    A 1972 graduate of Ledyard High School, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Connecticut in 1978 and a masters of Business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnieal Institute.
    Ms. Ellis was employed by United Nuclear Corp. from 1978 - 1992 holding various technical and human resources assignments. From 1987-1992, she was manager of emplouee relations/recruiting having the responsibility for staffing one of the most sophisticated state of the art manufacturing facilities in the world.
    dIn 1993, she was promoted to vice president of human resources in UNC Tri-Manufacturing Facility in Terre Haute, Ind., and subsequently was promoted to vice president of human resources for Lear Siegler Corporate Office in Annapolis UNC Lear Stegler is the largest UNC division, providing military services throughout the world.
    In addition to her mother survivors include a brother William W. Ellis of Anchorage, Alaska, and a sister, Susan M. Billings of Gales Ferry with whom she made her home.
    Also survived by two nieces, Katherine Billings and Adrenne Ellis and one nephew, Kaelin Ellis. Callinghours are Monday from 6-9 p.m. at Gales Ferry Funeral Home of Church and Allen, Hurlbutt Road, Gales Ferry. Burial 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gales Ferry Cemetery. Donations may be made in her name to either the American Cancer Society or the Connecticut Humane Society.

EMILY ARMSTRONG
    WARWICK - Mrs. Emily J. Armstrong, 87, of 125 Wriston Ave., died Wednesday after a six-month illness. She was a widow of William H. Armstrong.
    Born in Norton, Kansas, on July 2, 1888, she was a daughter of the late John and Addie (Spiegle) Davis. She was a resident of the Norwood section for the last 56 years.
    Survivors include a son, Clifford E. Armstrong of Warwick, two daughters Mrs. Irene M. Trudeau and Mrs. Goldie Jones, both of Warwick; two sisters, Mrs. Goldie Avery of Ledyard, Mrs. Lucy Tetreault of St. Petersburg, Fla; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
    A private funeral service will be held tomorrow at the Thomas and Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2135 Warwick Ave. Burial will be in the New Pawtuxet Cemetery.

    I was born in a dugout cellar in Norton County, Kansas, Dec. 18, 1896. Ten miles south of Norton, Kansas, and ten miles north of Edmond, Kansas. My father John Brewster Davis and mother Addie Spegal proved upon Govt. land. A Homestead claim and timber claim. After living in the dugout for a few years, my father made a sod house of the virgin soil on the Kansas plains. They fought the heat, droughts, rattlesnakes, chinch bugs, prairie fires, blizzards until they owned their 1/2 of a section 320A of Kansas virgin soil. Signed Oct. 20, 1966.

Goldie married Andrew Meech AVERY [scrapbook], son of Andrew Jackson AVERY and Mary Leonard MEECH, on 1 Aug 1919 in Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut. Andrew was born 19 Jun 1884 in No. Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. He died 29 May 1969 in Preston, New London Co., Connecticut and was buried in Avery Cemetery, Preston, New London Co., Connecticut.

    I was born in North Stonington, Conn. June 19, 1884, in the old farm house. There was space in the chimney in the attic for smoking meat. House had 13 rooms, two. There was a cellar and a sub cellar for root vegetables. A dug well was in back with a counter weight.
    Father had stalls for 24 cows, 16 on lower floor and 8 upper floor of Barn. House barn down east in lower Barn for 2 horses and a pair of Oxen.
North of house was Pig house, shed and also 8 or 10 pigs. Six or 8 sheep wer kept under the lower barn.

    Grange Chaplain Andrew Avery Dies at 84
    LEDYARD - Andrew Meech Avery, 84, of 167 Colonel Ledyard Highway, died Thursday in Preston.
    He was born June 19, 1884, in North Stonington, the son of Andrew and Mary Leonard Meech Avery. He was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy in 1905 and was captain of the football team from Yale University in 1909. He married the former Goldie Davis, Aug. 1, 1919, at Fox Hill, Norwich.
    During World War I, he served two years in France a a second lieutenant. For more than 15 years, Mr. Avery served on the New London Draft Board and had been active in polities in Ledyard, when he had been assessor and a justice of the peace.
    Mr. Avery was a member of the Ledyard Grange for more than 40 years and had served as Master, Treasurer and Chaplain. He was also president of the Avery Cemetery Association and a deacon of Ledyard First Congregational Church.
    He was a descendant of Elder Brewster who came to the country on the Mayflower, Capt. John Gallup who participated in the Swamp Fight where he was buried, Thomas Stanton, who had taught the Indians English and had served as a translator. Robert Allen, who was the first Allen in the area and Samuel Leonard, who was captured by the Indians for two years and who made his homein Preston.
    In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, Andrew D. Avery of Ledyard Center, three daughters, Mrs. George Clark and Mrs. Isaac Geer, both of Ledyard and Mrs. Roy Williams of North Stonington; ten grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
    Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Church and Allen Funeral Home. Interment will be in Avery Cemetery, Preston.Calling hours are from 7 to 9 tonight.
