     He was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisted as a private Aug. 7, 1862, in Co. G, 114th NY Vols. He was in many battles and sieges and in several skirmishes. He was taken prisoner in the battle of Cedar Creek, Oct. 19, 1864, and was confined in Libby Prison and at Salisbury, NY; was paroled Mar. 2, 1865; discharged June 13, 1865.

William married Clara L. BURDICK on 30 Jan 1866.

Selah married Dr. William W. ALLEN on 10 Nov 1857. William was born in Angelica, New York. He died 11 Jun 1878 in Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co., Iowa.

     Removed with his parents to Wisconsin in 1846; attended Normal School at W. Newton, Mass.; was several years a sailor; returned to Wisconisn and studied medicine with Dr. Wilbur of Mineral Point; went to California, where he remained two years; settled in Eau Claire, Wis., in 1857, as a dry-goods merchant. Here he was elected County Superintendent of Schools. In April. 1860, he went to Denver and practised medicine. In 1861 he enlisted as a private in Co. H, 2nd Regt. Wis. Vols. May 11, 1862, he was appointed hospital steward, and served as such through the second battle of Bull Run; here he was detailed to look after the wounded left in charge of the Confederates, and after eight days of great hardship was paroled. The exposure permanently impaired his health, but on being discharged from the hospital he again became hospital steward, serving as such to the close of the war.
    In Sept., 1865, he settled in Avoca, Wis., where he practised medicine with great success. In 1867 he removed to Mason City, where he practised medicine for the remainder of his life.

    He removed with his parents to Macoupin Co., Illinois in 1859. June 25, 1864, at the age of sixteen, he enlisted as a private in Co. A Cavalry, Mississippi Marine Brigade, serving in the capacity thirteen months and six days, being mustered out at Vicksburg, Mississippi, Feb. 20, 1865. He saw much active service, and endured many hardships. The entire term of service was one continuous skirmish with such rebels as Adams, Marmaduke, Quantrell, and Forest.

Luella married J. H. STEVENS on 25 Dec 1874. J. H. STEVENS was born 9 Mar 1847 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co., Illinois.

   In 1858 he went into the Douglass & Randall mill at Mason City, Iowa to look after the interest of his uncle, Sam Douglass. In Aug. 1862, he enlisted in the 32nd Iowa Vol. Inf., and served till the end of the war. After the battle of Pleasant Hill, La., he was the only officer of Co. B who answered to roll-call, a canteen of water saving his life from a bullet. After the war he engaged in framing, and later in grain-buying. He served one year as County Recorder and was afterwards appointed postmaster at Mason City.
