Mr. Armstrong was educated in the public schools of new London, his native city. At the age of twenty-four years he established the business now carried on by the Brainerd and Armstrong Co., Silk Manufactures of New London, Conn., and for the past thirty-seven years has been both president and treasurer of the company. This company enjoys the reputation of being one of the most successful of the many engaged in this important industry in the United States, its annual production amounting to nearly three million dollars. He is one of the principal owners and one of the managing directors of the Nonotuck Silk Co., of Florence, Mass., this company doing a business of about six million dollars per annum; also fo the Corticelli Silk Co., Limited, at St. Johns, Providence of Quebec, Canada, having their own stores in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Sidney, Australia.
He is president of the G. M. Williams Co., a successful business enterprise located in New London, Conn.; president of the New London Real Estate and Improvement Co., of the same city; he was one of the incorporators of the Memorial Hospital Association, and its first president; president of the Brainerd Lodge Corporation, vice-priesident of the National Bank of Commerce for ten years; July, 1904, by unanimous vote chosen president; was president of the New London and Groton Steam Ferry Co. for ten years, during which time the old steamer Uncas was discarded and replaced with the modern steamer Colonel Ledyard, now running between New London and Groton. He is said to be the larget owner of real estate in the city of New London. He has been prisident of the Board of Water Commissioners for the past eighteen years. Under his administration large reservoirs have been built and the entire system of water supply had been enlarged and improved, until New London has today one of the best in the entire country. He enjoys vigous health, that has enabled him to cary on all these impartant enterprises successfully for so many years. In politics he is a Republican, and has refused all political honors repeatedly offered by his party, both are members of the Congregational Church. Residence in 1904, New London, Conn.

He worked in the mills of his father in Brookfield until about 1840. In 1843 the mills burned. He removed, in 1844, to Edmeston, NY, where he ran a grist-mill and manufactured hardware until 1850, when he removed to belmond, Allegany Co., NY, where he manufactured sash, doors and blinds in connection with his brother adin. Nov. 1, 1854, he moved to Iowa, stopping for a short time at Waterloo, Iowa. In 1855, he settled permanently in Mason City, Iowa. In company with Samuel douglass he built the first circular saw-mill on Lime Creek, in which the first board was sawed Oct 31, 1855. Two years later he built a grist-mill with two run of stones. In 1872 he obtained a patent for the Randall lime-kiln. In politics he was first a Whig and then a Republican, being a member of the first organized Republican Convention in Cerro Gordo Co. He was Justice of the Piece for some years; was County Judge for one term and County Recorder for one term; was the first County Supervisor for one term, and held minor offices. He was for two years a director in the Central Iowa Railway. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at seventeen, of which he and his wife continued lifelong members.
