Dudley Hewitt born in Stonington, Conn., 29 Apr 1765 (VR), son of Israel Hewitt and Tabitha Wheaton; died in Gaines Township, Tioga Co., Pa. in 1849 (Tioga Co. Probate Records). Dudley married LUCY ____. Nothing is known of Lucy except she was his wife when they sold property in Tioga co., Pa. in 1819. She may have been a 2nd wife. Lucy was living in Feb 1839, Tioga Co., Pa. when she and Dudley assigned property to a son, Russell Hewitt, for $1.00.
Dudley was only 18 years old when his father died and left him the southern part of the homestead in Stonington, Conn. He and his wife lived there until about 1796, when Dudley and his brother Gurdon moved their families to Chenango Co., NY. Dudley first bought property in Norwich, Chenango Co., on 29 Dec 1797 (Deed Book A, p. 95). The family remained there for many years, Dudley sold his land in Norwich in 1814 (Deed Book R, p. 422), and resettled in Tioga Co., Pa. He purchased property in Delmar Township and later in Shippen and Gaines Townships. By 1820, he was operating a sawmill on Mill Run near the town of Gaines, Pa. Later, Dudley built the first sawmill on Pine Creek in Shippen Township, an area now encompassed by Gaines Township. With the help of his sons, Dudley, Jr., Weaton and Russell, he carried on an extensive lumbering business for many years.
Dudley served as a Lt. Colonel in the 67th Regiment of the New York militia during the War of 1812. He was referred to as Col. Dudley Hewitt in the histories of both Chenango Co., NY and Tioga Co., Pa.
A Letter of Administration was granted 7 April 1849, to Wheaton Hewitt on the estate of Dudley Hewitt, late of Gaines Township, Tioga Co., Pa. (Tioga Co. Probate Records, case #180). An inventory taken 15 May 1849, showed assets comprised of oxen, a team of horses, a cow, blacksmith tools and household goods. The total value was placed about $250.
The US Census 1790-1810 indicates that Dudley and his wife had at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. Not all the names of the children are known.

Gurdon Hewitt born in Stonington, Conn., 10 Mar 1776 (VR), son of Israel Hewitt and Tabitha Wheaton; died in Towanda Township, Bradford Co., Pa. in 1815 (Bradford Co. Probate Records. Gurdon married EUNICE ____. Little is known of this lady except that she was the mother of his children, probably married in Conn., and she was still living on 30 Dec 1815, when she signed off on her dower rights in Towanda, Pa. (Bradford Co. Probate Records). No cemetery markers have been found for Gurdon or Eunice Hewitt.
Gurdon was 15 years old when his father died in Stonington, Conn. and left a will stating that Gurdon was "to be put to a suitable trade". When he became age 25, Gurdon was to inherit money in the amount of 10 pounds. The court appointed his sister Nancy's husband, George Williams, to be Gurdon's legal guardian while he was a minor (Stonington Probate Records, docket #1624).
Gurdon and Eunice were living in New London, Conn. in 1790, with 2 young sons. In 1796, they left Conn., accompanying his brother, Dudley and family, for Chenango Co., NY. They first settled in the town of Norwich and later moved to a farm in Oxford, NY. Gurdon purchased and sold a number of parcels of property from 1797 to 1811, and became prosperous. He was on the board of trustees of the Oxford Academy in 1809. At one time, he owned a tavern at Fort Hill near Oxford.
When a friend defaulted on a note which Gurdon had co-signed, he was obligated to make good. This ruined him financially. Gurdon sold what property he could and left Oxford to start over in Bradford Co., Pa. He moved his family to Monroe, Pa. where he became a lumberman in 1811. For a while, before his early death, he operated a sawmill near Towanda, Pa.
Gurdon died interstate. On 30 Dec 1815, the widow Eunice renounced her dower claim to any real estate of her deceased husband, and requested that son, Gurdon Hewitt, Jr., act on her behalf. A Letter of Administration was granted to Gurdon, Jr. the same day, to settle his father's estate (Bradford Co. Probate Records, docket #40, Book 1, p. 12). On 14 Feb 1816, Gurdon, Jr. Posted a $1000 bond with the court. A Letter of Administration was also issued to Gurdon, Jr. in Chenango Co., NY on 3 July 1816, to settle the father's estate of property still owned in Chenango County (Chenango Co. Probate Records, Book A, p. 103).
Eunice died a few years after her husband, in Towanda, Pa. Gurdon Hewitt, Jr. made a deposition on 22 May 1819, to the court stating that his father and mother were both deceased and that they left only 2 children then living, himself and Calvin Hewitt, who was still a minor. Silas Marsh of Oxford, NY, a son-in-law of the deceased couple, also signed a deposition dated 2 July 1819 (Chenango Co. Probate Records).

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Boston, The Everett Press Company 1907, by Cyrus Henry Brown, page 14, 30.
His Revolutionary record: Mr. Joshua Brown was a Lieutenant in Capt. Thomas Holmes' Company of the 8th Rebt., Col. Oliver Smith Commanding; Brigadier Gen. Saltinstall's Brigade. He enlisted Sept. 8, 1776; discharged Nov. 17, 1776; in the campaign around New York.
Joshua Brown (77) bought his farm of Robert Williams in 1786, and from the north part of the town came here to live, with his family. There was only a partially built house on the farm. The east half was used for a dwelling; the west part, not completed, sheltered the cattle in cold weather. This part, later, was finished with two stories in front and a slanting roof on the back. Some time later, the rear was built up to compare with the front, as seen in the picture. In this house lived their son Randall (289), who married Sally Palmer, and a few years later his son Randall, Jr. (3937), who married Mary A. Holmes, went to housekeeping here. The name Randall has come down from one generation to the next from Elizabeth Randall, born July 4, 1696, the mother of Joshua Brown. This house was removed in 1878, and a house with all modern improvements adorns this beautiful location. On this farm have lived the direct descendants of Joshua and Joannah (Rogers) Brown for one hundred and twenty years. The present owners and occupants, in 1906, are Jeremiah (Jerry) H. (3846), Fanny Ella (3849), who married Charles B. Palmer, also the widow of Frederick H. (3849), Mrs. Amelia (Shaffer) Brown.
Joshua Brown and his son Randall had slaves on this farm, and they cleared a piece of land and walled it in for a garden that was given the slaves to cultivate. It is seen at the northeast of the house, some distance away.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. II, 1915, by Cyrus Henry Brown, page 242.
Joseua Brown lived on the James Brown homestead until the death of his mother, in 1786, and his children were all born here. He then removed to a farm in the coutherly part of Stonington, where he built his house, living here until he died, Sept. 26, 1824.
