As a young man, Joseph left Connecticut for western New York State. He and Hannah were in Ontario Co., NY in 1800, with 2 small children, a son and a daughter. In 1804, he purchased land from the Holland Land Company and settled initially, in Cambria, Niagara Co., NY. There he cleared his land and began farming. He also built and operated the first saw mill in the area. The first town meeting of Cambria was held 5 Apr 1808, in his home, and he was elected supervisor of the town for 1808 and 1809. Joseph served as supervisor again in 1815 and 1816. After the town of Lewiston was formed in 1818, Joseph moved his family there and developed a large farm. He set out 25 apple trees to establish the first apple orchard in Niagara Co., NY.
