He was a farmer, but is not now in business. He has been a postmaster, Deputy County Clerk, Deputy County Treasure, Town Collector, and Town Assessor. He is a Republican. He now is and his wife was a member of the Episcopal Church.

Hiram married Susie D. BARNARD, daughter of O. F. H. BARNARD and Susan RANSOM, on 4 Feb 1862 in Williamsville, Erie Co., New York. Susie was born 2 Jan 1842 in Williamsville, Erie Co., New York.

He was educated at Racine, Wisconsin, and Aurora, Illinois. At the age of twenty-one he enlisted in the 4th Illinois Cavalry. In June, 1862, he raised a company in his old neighborhood, of which he was elected Captain. This was Co. I of the 76th Illinois. He was elected Major by the officers of the regiment in July, 1863; in 1864 was appointed Inspector General and Chief of Infantry of 2nd Division of 19th Army Corps, and later Inspector-General of the 2nd Division; was relieved at his own request at Ft. Gaines, Alabama, when he was given command of the regiment. He was discharged Aug. 4, 1865. He lived for a short time in Rockville; was County Treasurer of Kankakee Co., Illinois, for six years from 1900; was cashier of customs at chicago at the time of his death. He was a Republican, and he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.

Walter married Asenath GERARD, daughter of Isaac GERARD and Maria, on 19 Nov 1895 in Westchester, Ohio. Asenath was born 9 Nov 1844 in Newton, Ohio. She died 16 Dec 1895 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

Later they moved to Schenectady, NY, where he is superintendent of the GGeneral Electric Company. Both are members of the Presbyterian Church, and Mr. Marquis is an elder. They had no children.

He went to Saginaw in 1862, soon after marriage, and made a permanent home there. Edwin Alken was one of the best-known citizens of Saginaw. He was a resident of the city more than forty years, and much of that time he was in public life in various capacities, which gave him an extended acquaintance in the city and conty. He held many prominent offices in the gift of the people. He was elected a member of the Board of Education, also of the Board of Supervisors many years. He was City Controller many years, and was a recognized authority on all public matters of the city and county. He was a remarkably well-informed man. When the Board of Auditors was created by act of the Legislature, Mr. Aiken was elected a member of that body, and held that position at the time of his death. His political affiliations were strongly with the Republicans. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity for many years. Mrs. Aiken lives at 402 Jefferson Ave., Sagginaw, Michigan.
