Honorable Daniel Babcock, was born in North Stonington, CT, 31 Aug 1762, and died at Ashaway, RI, Sept. 18, 1846. He was only nine years of age when his father died and for the next five years he and his mother resided with his brother, Joshua, on the homestead faarm. When he was fourteen years of age he was apprenticed to Elder Henry Clark, who was a blacksmith and operated iron works at what was later known as Woodville, in Hopkinton, RI. During the Revolationary was on the occassion of the besieging of Fort Griswold, at Groton, CT, by the British he with others set out to relieve the garrison, but on reaching Mystic, CT, learned that the garrison had surrendered, whereupon, it is recorded, "He and his comrades 'wept like children' at not being able to render assistance." He also drove an ox team from Hopkinton to New London, a distance of twenty-five mile, with provisions for the army and did other home guard duty alson the RI shore, but never asked for a pension. After completing his apprenticeship he became a blacksmith at Potter Hill, RI, but six years later he removed to Hopkinton, later called Ashaway, were the remainder of his life was spent.
For forty-six years he was Justice of the Peace, for nine years, 1807-16, he was a member of the Upper House of the State, elected by general proxy and carried with him the suffrage of all parties, retaining the office by unanimous vote. For ten years he was Judge of the County Court of Washington County, and several times represented his town in the Lower House of the Legislature. Becoming widely known, he was called near and far as arbiter and counselor in difficult cases, in both Church and State. He was an intimate friend and counselor of Governors Fenner, Knight and others, was a freind and relative of Rufus Babcock, D.D. and was loved and honored by all.
His brothers, Captain Oliver and Dr. Christopher, were distinguished officers in the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the First Seventh Day Baptist Church of Hopkinton, which he served as deacon for about fifty-eight years and as chorister for almost fifty. It is a matter of record that he was a "deacon" in the truest sense, his home being always open to the poor and needy. Alive to whatever was helpful to individual character, he was one of the first pioneers for total abstinence in Rhode Island. He was a devout Christian, and a true "gentleman of the old school."
Daniel married April 8, 1784, Content Potter.

3-12 BABCOCK, Benjamin, of Nathan and Deborah, born April 7, 1751.

THE BABCOCK GENEALOGY, by Stephen Babcock, page 60.
Benjamin-6 Babcock, son of Colonel Nathan Babcock and Deborah (Stafford) Babcock, was born at Westerly, RI. He married Desire Billings of Stonington, Connecticut, Feb. 4, 1779. In 1801 they emigrated to Pennsylvania. They settled at or near Bridgewater, Susquahanna County, Pennsylvania, for it was here that one of their sons, Benjamin (2nd) resided. Susquehanna County, Penn., which was then a part of Luzerne County, was claimed by Connecticut for many years. References to Legistation affecting the "Connecticut claimants" are found in the legislative manuals of the Pennsylvania legislature during years between 1780 and 1810.
Inasmuch as Benjamin Babcock (1st) married Desire Billings of Stonington, Conn., there seems a possibility that he became a resident of Connecticut following his marriage. If this is true then it seems creditable that he may have been given a grant of this land by that state. In any event it is known that he emigrated to Pennsylvania. His son, Benjamin Babcock (2nd) resided at Bridgewater, Susquahanna County, Penn. until 1818. During that year he removed to what is now known as Babcock Hill, near the village of Windham, Penn. (Bradford County). The records of his other children have not been obtained to date of this writing.
Benjamin Babcock, Sr., served as a private in Captain Squire Millard's company of Colonel Waterman's regiment from Jan. 9, 1777 to Feb. 8, 1777; later served in the Pawtuxet Rangers. His father, Colonel Nathan Babcock, was commander of the Kings County regiment of militia in 1761 and probably commanded a sort of home guard during the Revolution, as the records show that artillery was stateioned on his land by order of the colonial officials.
Records show that Benjamin Babcock, Sr. purchased land in Forest Lake (Bridgewater) Township in Susquehanna County, Penn. in 1810 from Robert H. Rose, et al. And that Benjamin Babcock, Jr. purchased land in Windham Township (Bradford County, Penn.) in 1828 from Robert H. Rose; in 1841 and 1847 from Charles S. Gorse, in 1847 from Caleb Carmalt; and in 1854 from Uriah Wright.

In 1801, Benjamin Babcock came, and was the original settler of what has since been known as "the Brock farm". In the spring of 1832, while attending to his cattle, he was injured in the head by one of them, and died from the effects. He had been a Revolationary soldier, and was eighty-two years old.

Not far from this time Frederick Brock, a German, located at "Brockville," five miles from Montrose, on the farm cleared by Benjamin Babcock.

From an e-mail from Gordon Clark at clark626@epix.net
Benjamin Babcock has no stone at all and we have found a rundown, vandalized, neglected former Cemetery on the property, but only the stones of several of the Brock Family are evident. The Brock family purchased the Babcock property after the demise of Benjamin Babcock.
This cemetery and the Babcock property used to be on a road that ran through that area, but the road was abandoned by the township about 1960-65 and you would not know that there ever was a road there.
My plan is to try to get another active cemetery in the area to place the stone as a memorial site, since his remains are not identifed and the present site is unmaintainable, being approximantly a mile or so from the nearest road.

Death date from Val Van Zee at VaVZ@aol.com
After reading what you have on your web page about Benjamin I can add nothing except his date of death 6 Mar 1832, my records say at Bridgewater. We appear to have the same source for the other data. I do not have a date of death for his wife, Desire, but it is said that she also died at Bridgewater.
