    55. (Capt.) Joshua-5 Pendleton, was born at Westerly, RI, 6 May 1744, and died there while on a visit, 9 April 1824. He married at Westerly, 6 Jan 1768, Anna (Nancy) Clarke, daughter of Elisha and Mary (Potter) Clarke. She was born 7 Oct 1717, and died 17 June 1740, at Norwich, Conn.
Joshua Pendleton was a master mariner in early life, and retired from the sea when he was about fifty years of age. Up to that time he make his home at Westerly, RI, where he was more active  in military than in civil affairs. The Rhode Island records show that  he was appointed Ensign of the 1st Company Militia at Westerly in August, 1774, re-appointed, June, 1775, commissioned Lieutenant, 31 Oct, 1775, and 1776, Captain, May, 1777, and received subsequent appointments as Captain up to Feb. 1780, Joshua Pendleton served as Captain in Col. Noyes' Regiment, and received payment for "Provisions found" from 25 July to 1 August 1778.
His name does not appear often in the Council and Probate Records at Westerly, but on the 29th of March 1784, Capt. Joshua Pendleton and William Babcock, Esq., were appointed to set a value of the rent of Thompson's farm. About 1795 he removed to Norwich, Conn. where he bought a farm on the Bozrah line and lived there the rest of his life. Most of this farm lay in Bozrah, but his house was on the Norwich side of the boundary. The record of his death upon the Norwich records refers to him as "Deacon" a position he held for many years at the First Church of that town. His will, dated at Norwich, 30 Dec 1813, filed 5 May 1824 (Norwich Prob. Rec., xiii, 372; see Appendix VIII), names wife Anna, sons Joshua, William, Elisha C., and Adam; Daughters Nancy Rogers, Patty Palmer, Lucy Lathrop, Clarissa Harlowe Adams, Polly Bennett, and Lydia Bennett; grandson, Joseph Pendleton. In the naming of a daughter "Clarissa Harlowe." it would appear that the literature of his day was not unknown to Deacon Joshua.
The descendants of Capt. Joshua Pendleton are more numerous through his daughters than through his sons. Those bearing the name Pendleton have been mostly farmers with a sprinkling of business and professional men. Most of them are now located in Connecticut, New York and Colorado, with a few in Michigan, California and other states. Several of them have been members of state legislatures.

243. Elisha CLARKE Jr. (Elisha CLARKE , Anna BABCOCK , John , James ) was born 28 Jan 1750/1751 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. He died Aug 1835 in Leyden, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.

Checking records in Leyden involves several jurisdictions. Leyden originally was in Bernardston, but it was set off as the town of Leyden in 1784. At that time it was in Hampshire County, Mass. In 1811, however, Franklin County, was formed from Hampshire County, with Leyden winding up in Franklin County.

Elisha may have named three of his daughters after three sisters: Anna,
Martha and Hannah.

Bernardston Records: Elisha Clarke and Peleg Brown appeared on the Bernardston town rate in 1781--each one poll. And each living in the area that later became Leyden.
History of Leyden: Elisha Clark (sic) lived on a farm near Peleg Brown, and the 1790 census lists Elisha Clark, with two males under 16 and four females.
Families: Elisha Clarke, born 28 Jan. 1750-1751; living in Leyden, MA, in 1806. Wife only listed as Mary ________.

Franklin Probate: Elisha's will was dated 7 Jan. 1831 and recorded 25 Aug. 1835. He named as beneficiaries his wife Mary, his son Elijah Clarke and Elijah's son Alva. He said he already had provided for his son Elisha, deceased, and his daughters, Lucy Page; Martha Brown, deceased [wife of Eleazer Brown III]; Anna Brown [wife of Peleg Brown Jr., the older brother of Eleazer]; and Hannah Walworth. Elijah was named administrator but only was given "his support out of the use of my estate during his natural life." Grandson Alva Clarke was given "all the rest and residue of my estate, real and personal." Elijah died intestate in 1832, before his father, but Elisha did not make another will.

Perhaps he was not competent to do so. He was 82 years old at the time, and in 1825 a guardian had been appointed by the court to oversee his affairs. In a 10 May 1825 order, a probate judge declared "that the said Elisha does by excessive drinking so spend, waste and lessen his estate as thereby to expose himself and family to want and suffering circumstances, and does also endanger the said town of Leyden to a charge and expense for his and their maintenance and support." Evidently the town fathers were afraid they would wind up with a welfare case to handle. George Mowry was appointed guardian. A Tabor Babcock had opposed the guardianship.
At this time, 1825,  Elisha's property was inventoried at $1,701.17, $1,417 of that being real estate. Seven years later, 24 Nov. 1832 Elisha asked the court to end the guardianship, saying he had been "much abused and grieved by George Mowry." Six Leyden residents also advocated that the guardian should be removed. Elisha's request probably was precipitated by Mowry's 28 Aug. 1832 petition "to sell land to pay debts of the said spendthrift." On 12 Feb. 1833 the probate judge approved the sale of 14 acres of land. Evidently the guardianship was never lifted.
An inventory of Elisha's property after his death was difficult to figure
out. Apparently his real estate and personal property totaled $1,137.16.
There was $519 in debts, but were these subsequently substracted from the above total? Also, another figure put his personal property at $1,302.49. Some property also was sold at auction. At any rate, grandson Alva Clarke apparently inherited all of Elisha's property since his grandmother Mary died before her husband Elisha.

Elisha married Mary. Mary was born about 1750. She died 29 Jul 1832 in Leyden, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.

Christopher Babcock was born in Westerly RI, Sept. 12, 1734. He owned and occupied a farm near the seashore in the town of Westerlly; was admitted a freeman by the General Assembly of RI, May 1758; was justice of the peace for Westerly, 1769, 79, 83. (See Smith's Civil and Military List of RI). He was lieunant in Captain Champlain's Train Band, Westerly Militia, 1767. In 1813, three years after the death of his wife, he sold to his youngest son Asa, sixty acres of land for one thousand dollars. The same year Asa sold the land and removed to Smyrna, New York, and Christopher must have gone with him for he died at the home of his son Asa, March 15, 1815, and was buried in Smyrna, NY.
One year after his mother married Stephen Chalker, or Chaucer, Christopher Babcock married, in 1754, his step-sister, Mehitable Chalker (sometimes written Chaucer or Chalkens) who was born in Saybrook, CT., Sept. 9, 1733, and died in Westerly, RI, June 8, 1810. She was buried in the Babcock or Massatuxet burying ground near Avondale, RI, but about 1884, her remains, with those of her son, Stephen and his wife Phebe, were removed from the neglected spot where they were first buried, to the First Hopkinton Cemetery, near Potter Hill, RI. This removal was directed by Phebe Babcock, granddaughter of Mehitable, daughter of Stephen and wife of Oliver. Phebe's remains were afterwards interred in the adjoining lot beside her husband.
The father of Mehitable (Chalker) Babcock was Stephen Chalker, son of Stephen Chalker, born in Saybrook, CT., July 19, 1707. He was of the fourth generation of General Alexander Chalker, who was one of the original proprietors of the town of Saybrook, CT, and was killed in the Narragansett War (Chapman Genealogy). Mehitable's mother was Mehitable Chapman, born November 17, 1705, daughter of Captain Samuel and Margaret (Griswold) Chapman of Norwich, CT. Stephen Chalker and Mehitable Chapman were married December 14, 1727. An item in Stephen's will, dated 1773, mentions his daughter, Mehitable Babcock, wife of Christopher Babcock.
