    Oliver was a minor, Apr. 21, 1698, at which time he chose his brother, Capt. James, as gardian.
    On Nov. 25, 1715, Oliver gave a mortgage on one hundred and thirty acres of land for 100 lbs. currency, which he borrowed from the Colony of Rhode Island, without interest. A month earlier his brother James had borrowed 300 lbs. under similar conditions, fully described in his biography.
    Oliver was admitted a freeman May 1, 1716. He was Deputy from Westerly to the General Assembly in 1730, '34, '37, '38, '52. (C.R. of R.I., vol. v.) For a large part of his life public records refer to him as "Col. Oliver Babcock." At a meeting of the General Assembly held at Warwick, RI, on the second Monday of August, 1735, Capt. Oliver Babcock was appointed on of a committee "for creating a new harbor in Westerly by turning the Pawcatuck River into the largest salt pond along the Westerly shore, so that said pond would become a very commodious and navigable harbor, and would likewise be very convenient for catching and making codfish".
    Mar 19 1757, Hopkinton was set off from Westerly and Col. Oliver Babcock's home was in the new town. He was probably ninety years old at the time of his death in 1773.

    Was born in Westerly RI, in 1669, and died there March 28, 1746. He and his wife lived about two miles east of Pawcatuck Bridge, Westerly, on what in 1903, was the Post Road, and in the house which was later a hotel kept by Sylvester Gavitt. He was prominent both in local affairs and in the General Assembly from 1691, when he assisted in the survey of the town lands, to within nine years of his death, serving as tax assessor, 1697-99; town councilman, 1699; town clerk, April 26, 1700; probate clerk, 1700; rate maker, March 22, 1703; Captain of Militia for the years 1709, 11, 15, 18, 20, 21, 23; town clerk from 1706-1732, when he was succeeded by his son William; deputy for the town of Westerly in the General Assembly in the years 1695, 1702, 13, 15, 18, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26; justice of the peace for Westerly from 1730 to 1737. On May 19, 1710, John Babcock and Robert Babcock with ten others bought from the colony a tract of land containing 2,684 acres known as the "Maxson purchase." John and his wife Mary, "quit claim January 18, 1715-16, unto William Champlain all maner of action, suits, bills, bonds, depts, etc, on account of any legacy, sum or sums of maney due us out of our deceased father, William Chaplain's estate." He married, in 1700, his cousin, Mary Chaplin, second child of William and Mary (Babcock) Champlin.

    Elisha died July 14, 1726, of a blow on the head accidentally given (Hempstead's Diary, p. 172).
    The children of Elisha and Elizabeth (Babcock) Avery were born at Stonington and baptized in the First Church there.

    Joseph Babcock Avery was born Dec. 10, 1715, bap. June 3, 1716. A Joseph Avery died abroad, in his will probated in the Preregative Court, Canterbury, England, and noted in New London, in Dec. 1746, he was called of Bristol, Great Britian, but formerly of Stonington, Conn. (New London Probate Court Journal, 5:48). HIs will was dated March 13, 1744. In it he called himself a mariner. He left suit of half mourning each to James Vincent and to Betty Stone, spinster; the rest of his estate to his friend, Jane Day, who proved the will at Canterbury, July 7, 1746. (N.E. Hist. & Gen. Reg., Jan., 1908, p. 93). We know that Joseph Babcock Avery died before the division of his brother's estate, March 10, 1762.
