A brief history of the Sarsfield Families in Ireland by Norman and Brian Sarsfield

This history concerns two branches of the Sarsfield Family - a Dublin (or Lucan) branch and a Cork
branch.  A Family Tree exists which traces their lineage (rather uncertainly at first) from their first recorded
appearances in Ireland in the late twelfth century to modern times.  There is evidence that it was
commissioned by a member of the Cork branch (perhaps living in exile in France) from the English College
of Heralds in the late eighteenth century.  This has been brought up to date as far as possible and greatly
expanded by recent research.  The original, together with family papers dating back to early times, was the property of Thomas Herrick Sarsfield of Mallow in County Cork, head of the Cork branch, and all are now in the National Library in Dublin.

While this history deals almost entirely with these two branches, it should be noted that in later centuries, scattered world-wide, there were other Sarsfield families and it is not always known if, or in what way, they are related to the families described herein.

The authors are engaged in an ongoing project to collect as much information as  possible on these other  families in order to connect as many as possible to the  'Main' tree.   We already have a number of other
Sarsfield family trees that one day, hopefully, will be linked to the main one.  Any information on Sarsfield ancestors and descendants in the male line prior to 1900 (see Background Notes), irrespective of  their
origins, and copies of other Sarsfield Family Trees would be welcomed by the authors.

The main Sarsfield Family Tree, referred to above, is available from the authors in Gedcom format, to
anyone with Sarsfield connections in their own family.
