A private 19th century family tree shows Henry John Vardon as the son of Samuel Vardon and Charlotte (nee Ling). The tree shows a connected descent from John Vardon of Congleton in the late 16th century. Henry John Vardon is given in the tree as twice married, with children Maynard and Gaspard (of the first marriage) who died in Madras, and a statement (apparently incorrect) that there were no live children of the second marriage.

Henry John was stated to have died in Madras in 1842. This, and his age, matches the burial in 1842 transcribed by fibis volunteers of East India Register 1843 of "Capt. Vardon, formerly of the country sea service, aged 55".

In the transcription of Frederick Findley Ferguson Vardon's birth entry he is given as "son of Henry John, Cpt., Country Service; Adelaide Catherine", which enables the name of Henry John Vardon's second wife and their other children to be identified reasonably securely.

However - the linkages could be incorrect. Reader, beware.
