ELIZABETH (BETTE) TOWNSEND HUGHBANKS passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2007.
She was born September 12, 1926, in Hollywood, CA. She attended No. Hollywood H.S. and Occidental College.
Bette came to Rialto in 1956 with her husband, Robert, who later served as mayor of Rialto. She was involved in an extraordinary amount of volunteer work. Bette initiated the pre-school vision screening program in 1965 and the Rialto School District's dental health program in 1971.

She was treasurer of Rialto Community Scholarship Assoc. for 22 years, president of Rialto Child Welfare Committee and Rialto Historical Society president for 20 years. She was appointed and twice elected to the County Committee School District Organization in 1987. Bette served in many other organizations, and played an important role in more volunteer groups than any other person in Rialto's history. Hughbanks Elementary School, in Rialto, was named after her.

Bette was selected as Citizen of the Year by Rialto Chamber of Commerce, California State Senate Woman of the Year, received Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award, won Rialto Business and Professional Women's Club Woman of Achievement Award, and received League of Women Voters' Citizen of Achievement Award.

Survivors Include: husband, Robert W. Hughbanks of Rialto, CA; sister, Virginia Ferris of Apple Valley, CA; children, David & Michele Hughbanks of Lakewood, CO, Christine & Kenneth Redford of Fontana, CA, Dale & Doreen Hughbanks of Hesperia, CA, Douglas & Natalie Hughbanks of Oceanside, CA, Elizabeth & Martin Florez of Phoenix, AZ, Daniel & Sharon Hughbanks of Crestline, CA; seven grandchildren and one great grand child.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 28th at 2:00 p.m. at Rialto Historical Church on the corner of N. Riverside Ave. & Second St. in Rialto. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to th e Rialto Historical Society.
