Bagby, Arthur Pendleton (1794-1858) -- also known as Arthur P. Bagby -- of Alabama. Born in Louisa County, Va., 1794. Democrat. Member of Alabama state house of representatives, 1821; member of Alabama state senate, 1825; Governor of Alabama, 1837-41; U.S. Senator from Alabama, 1841-48; U.S. Minister to Russia, 1848-49. Died in Mobile, Mobile County, Ala., September 21, 1858. Interment at Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Ala. See also: congressional biography.

BAGBY, Arthur Pendleton, a Senator from Alabama; born in Louise County, Va., in 1794; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced practice in Claiborne, Ala.; member of the State house of representatives in 1821, 1822, 1824, and 1834-1836, serving as speaker in 1822 and 1836; served in the State senate in 1825; Governor of Alabama 1837-1841; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Clement C. Clay and served from November 24, 1841, until June 16, 1848, when he resigned to become Minister to Russia; chairman, Committee on Territories (Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses), Committee on Claims (Twenty-ninth Congress), Committee on Indian Affairs (Twenty-ninth Congress); United States Minister to Russia 1848-1849; member of the commission to codify the State laws of Alabama in 1852; moved to Mobile, Ala., in 1856, where he died on September 21, 1858; interment in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Ala.

West Virginia History, Vol. 3
This is an old Virginia family, the progenitor, Province McCormick, having been a native of Frederick county, Virginia, where he was born September 10, 1799. He was a lawyer, and for twenty-five years was commonwealth attorney during successive terms; he was politically a Whig. His entire life was passed in Frederick county, and he died at Berryville, July 4, 1873.


He married Margarette Holmes Moss, who died also at Berryville, November 26, 1865, she being then fifty-three years of age. The family were members of the Episcopal church. There were nine children, three of whom are still living at Berryville: William Moss; Gertrude Holmes; Dr. Charles; Ann R., living at Berryville; Millicent; Elwina Parker; Hugh Holmes; Province, living at Berryville; Marshall, of whom further.
