(46/F) 10/24/99
"James Coffey and his wife Elizabeth Cleveland went to Surry Co. NC (which is now Wilkes Co I believe). They established a church in the Mulberry Field section. The church was usually called "Coffey's meeting House". From there my line seemed to wander further south into Cherokee County NC. Some went from there to GA or TN. I do know from my records that when my Grandfather got married in 1920 he was still using the "Coffee" spelling. Then on his SS application (in 1943) he had changed the spelling to Coffey. I have no idea why."
