Notes

Will Recorded 4 Jul 1693 Surry County, Virginia; An excellent Resource for life and times of Robert Ruffin and family may be found in the book, Tidewater Virginia Families by Virginia Lee Davis Published 1989. (pages 502-538)

Robert was the first Ruffin owner of the "Richneck" plantation. Although the present day house was not built until around 1800, it is probably in the same location as earlier plantation homes.

Robert died while his children were still young. His will was recorded in Surry County July 4, 1693, and we estimate that he would have been about 47 years old. He had made the will on May 8, 1693. We do not know where he was buried. There is evidence of burials at both the Lawnes Creek Church and the Ruffin "Richneck" burying ground....but no markers exist.

Notes

Married 1st name unknown. Will Peter Louis Soblet's will 5 Nov 1754. In 1718 Peter Louis was elected to the Vestry. He was appointed Church warden in 1726. He died in 1755. His will is in the Goochland Register, and names his sons: Peter, Jr., William, Abraham, Lewis, James, and Benjamin.

"Pierre Louis Soblett born, say, 1686, was referred to in the records of his parish and county varyingly as "Pierre Louis", "Louis Pierre"," Peter Lewis" (the anlicized form), "Louis Pre", or as simply "louis" or "Pierre". Louis seems to have been his preferred name. He is listed as a tithable as Louis Soblet in the year 1710 for King William Parish, and in the list of Parish expenses for the year 1710 he was allowed 6 shillings 7 pence "for three days work of himself and one day of his horse". He appears as Louis in 1711, 1712, 1713, 1714, and 1715, but in 1717 as Peter. On December 26, 1718 he was elected to the vestry along with his brother Jacques. On March 26, 1719 "[T]he Srs Jacques Soblet and Louis Pre Soblet, heretofore named as vesrtrymen, took to-day the oaths of the vestry and signed the test." The 1919 List of Tithables calls him Pre Louis Soblet. On April 20, 1720, "[T]he Srs Estienne Chastaine and Louis Soblet were elected by the vestry present as church wardens of the said parish, and the oaths were taken."

On the very same day, the parish being without a full-time resident clergyman, "It was declared the Sr. Louis Soblet have the use of the glebe for the term of two years, commecing Christmas of the year 1721, in consideration of which the said Louis Soblet binds himself to make repairs to the house which is built for the glebe; viz., he binds himself to roof the house, to fit on the two chimneys and in case there are any holes about the house, he is to close them with clap-boards, all at his own cost and expense. In addition he binds himself to make a thousand rails for the corn-field of the same glebe." He signed this agreement with the parish vestry as Pierre Louis Soblet. Apparently, this arrangement proved
unsatisfactory, for on July 29, 1721, before the lease was to take effect, it was agreed by the vestry that another was to have the use of the glebe.

A "glebe" is a plot of land granted to a clergyman as part of his benefice during his tenure in office. In the Anglican and Episcopal churches a "vestry" is a committee of members of the congregation that administers the affairs of the parish or congregation.

On March 28, 1722 "The Sieur Etiene Chastain and Louy Soblet, churchwardens, offered their resignations, and the vestry assembled granted their discharge." Louis continued to serve on the vestry for a period between 1722-1733, when he tendered his resignation. During this time he again served as churchwarden for a short time. While serving on the vestry he also played an active role on the building committee for the new parish church for he was appointed to make a contract with a builder and a carpenter. The church was to be built for a sum of "twenty-one thousand six hundred pounds of tobacco, to be paid in three years."

On July 20, 1755 there was patented to "Peter Lewis Soblet? 133 arces in the County of Goochland on the south side of James River beginning as a small corner locust parting Matthew Oage (i.e. Agee) and the said Soblet? the same being a part of the last five thousand acres of Land surveyed for the french Refusgees. On June 5, 1746 he patented a 385 acre tract in the county of henrico beginning at a white oak in Micheaux line.

The will of Peter Lewis Soblet "of Cumberland County and King William Parish", made November 5, 1754 was probated on January 27, 1755. By it he left to "my som William Soblet one certain tract of land whereon I now dwell [i.e. the 133 acre tract patented in 1738]?; to my son Abraham Soblet, my negro man Prymus?; to my son Lewis Soblet, a negro woman Candis and one certain tract or parcel of land containing 385 acres lying in Chesterfield County?; to my son Benjamin my horse, bridel and saddle and all my waring cloaths, and more I doe appoint and order my executors to pay all the debts that my son Benjamin owes at this day, to paid out of my movebal estate; to my son Lewis Soblet one negro gall named Judy Provisor he pay William Soblet and Abraham Soblet five pounds. All movebel of mine be equally divided between my four sons, William, Abraham, Lewis, and Benjamin."

It seems quite probable that Pierre Louis Soblet was married twice. His son Peter seems to have been substantially older than his five older sons, for Peter Jr had patented land in 1715 and was listed as a tithable from 1729 on, and under the
terms of the will quoted above he received considerably less than the other sons, presumably because he received his fair share much earlier. (It is conceivaable that the 1715 patent represents his share of the estate.) It should also be noted that when Pierre Louis came to divide the remainder of his estate, his "movebles", he divided them among his four sons, the fifth son, Peter, being noteably absent.

If there was a first wife her identity is unknown. It was presumably she who was listed as his wife on the "Liste generale" of 1714, along with one son [Peter, Jr]. The first wife probably died soon after 1714, and he married for the second time, about 1722, Marte (Martha) Martin. There are no documents which specifically establish Marte's maiden name, but her identity as a Martain (Martin) is reasonable to infer because the Martains recurringly stood at the font as grandparents for her children.
