Notes

CONFLICT: aka: Moses Heskew. Early Settler of the Republic of Texas. 1840 Bexar Co. TX Census. Moses joined his younger brother William already in Texas in or about 1837. Moses and William both participated in defending the young Republic of Texas from Mexican incursions that occurred in 1842. (Moses' Certificate of Vasquez / Walls Campaign) He was a sheriff, a farmer , a rancher, and a teacher it is said. Moses rode with the Texas Rangers under the command of Lonesome Dove fame, Captain Jack Hays and fought off the Mexican army invasions in what has now known as the Vasquez and Walls Campaigns.

William Alexander Hesskew and Moses Hesskew are brothers, based on the simple fact that the Hesskews are cited as somewhat residing together or in close proximity in Gonzales County in the 1860 as well as other facts including a letter written to William by Moses in 1879. Moses, was awarded a second-class Headright Land grant of 640 acres. This award indicates that Moses was a single man who arrived in Texas as an immigrant after the Declaration of Independence and prior to October 1, 1837.

CONFLICT: HESSKEW FAMILY INFORMATION by Ruth Claunch

LDS records reflect that a Moses Heskew , from Gonzales, Texas ,is the father of Armitta Levicey " Eliza" Heskew b. Jan 8 1855, Gonzales. I contacted the individual who submitted the information through the LDS with out any conclusive results.

Moses according to a tribute to him on his death in the Gonzales paper was from the Marberry District of South Carolina.

Excerpt from the book, " The Ties that Bind" a history of Gonzales County , Texas by Marjorie Burnett Hyatt

HESSKEW

There was a Hesskew Springs and a Hesskew school located on (present) John Billings property, around 1900. The Hesskew family was one of the very early families in this area, listed on the 1860 census at the Salt Stream Post Office. The road from Pilgrim to Smiley use to go by Hesskew Springs, before the present Hwy. 87 was built . There is still a windmill at the site of the old Hesskew home & school.

MOSES HESSKEW b.1805 SC or GA (conflicting census data) and his wife, LOUISA ______

The above information conflicts with the facts that a Marriage License. was issued in Bexar County to Moses Hesskins and Levicy Higinbotham 12/27/1844.

Note: An Amanda Hesskew b. ca 1850 md. Wm. H. WHIDDON; her death record states that her mother was Missouri SHAW HESSKEW & her father's name is not listed, This writer wants to know how/or if, Amanda was related to the Hesskews Listed in this book.

Father: Seth Woods PURL II

Notes

He was stolen when a child and never heard of again. Abt 1849, he was 8 yrs old, and was taken by a supposed friend of the family upon a visit to his plantation but who left the country and no trace was ever found. Described in letter written by his sister Julia.

There is a Nathan Purl, CSA vet, from Claiborne, MS, who might be this Napoleon.
Purl, Nathan, Confederate Infantry 8th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry:
8th Infantry Regiment was organized at Enterprize, Mississippi, during the spring of 1861. Many of its members were from Jones, Wilkinson, and Clarke counties. The unit served in Florida and Mississippi, then was assigned to General J.K. Jackson's, Gist's, and Lowry's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It participated in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, was with Hood in Tennessee, and saw action in North Carolina. This regiment lost forty-seven percent of the 282 at Murfreesboro and twenty-three percent of the 375 at Chickamauga. In December, 1863, it totalled 287 men and 169 arms. Its casualties at the Battle of Atlanta were 13 killed, 71 wounded, and 3 missing, and few surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels G.C. Chandler, Guilford G. Flynt, and John C. Wilkinson; Lieutenant Colonels James T. Gates, Aden McNeill, and John F. Smith; and Majors Andrew E. Moody, George F. Peek, and William Watkins.
