"Thomas was a patriot in the American Revolution, having furnished material to the Continental Army. When Thomas died, he loaned his widow Milly his large estate during her life, and at her death to be equally divided among her children and their heirs. In 1815, Milly made a division of the negroes among her children (WB 19, p. 144, Caroline County Records). The earlies available tax list for Caroline County shows Thomas paying taxes on 175 acres of land in 1782. This land was 6 miles west of the courthouse in Bowling Green, Virginia. Thomas owned and operated a mill on this land, bounded by the stream, White's Run, and the road leading to Bethany Meeting House. He was a slaveholder and also owned land in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He and his brothers Julius and Daniel purchased 1000 acres in Jefferson County, Kentucky in Feb 1780."

  • DEATH: 1658, Surry Co. Virginia

Father: Nicholas FLOOD FLUDD

Family 1 : Margaret
  1.  William FLOOD
  2. +John FLOOD Jr.
  3. +Thomas FLOOD Sr.
  4. +Mary FLOOD

Notes

CONFLICT in parents:
"COLONEL JOHN FLUDD GENT.\ FLOOD was baptized on 18 Mar 1592 in Canterbury, Saint Paul, England. He died in 1658 in Surry Co.Virginia. Col. John Flood of James City and Surry Counties, Virginia, arrived in 1610. In the "Muster Rolls, of Settlers in Virginia, 1624/5" is: The MUSTER of John Fludd: John Fludd arrived in the "Swan" 1610, Margaret his wife in the "Supply" 1620, Frances Finch her daughter in the "Supply" 1620, William Fludd his son aged 3 weeks."

John Flood was living in Charles City in 1616 and at "Jordan's Journey" in 1625; in 1638 he patened land and settled in James City County just across the river from Jamestown in the section which in 1652 became Surry County. The above mentioned patent, dated 12 May 1638, was issued to "John Fludd, Gent." and was for 2100 acres "E. upon land of Capt. Henry Browne, N. upon the maine river, S. into the maine woods & W. upon Benjamine Harrisons marked trees being upon the W. side of Sunken Marsh Cr.", for transportation of 42 persons. On June 7, 1650 "Capt. John Flood, Gent." surrendered this patent and was given another of 1100 acres.

Among his headrights were listed: John Flood, an Ancient Planter, Margt. his wife, Frances Finch her daughter, John Flood, Junr., Eliza. Browne, John Lawrence, John Writhe, Wm. Wood, and others ("Cavaliers and Pioneerss", pages 86 and 194).

The Grand Assembly held at James City October 5, 1646, enacted-" that upon any occasion of message to the Gov'r. or trade, the said Necotowance and his people the Indians doe repair to fforte Henery alias Appmattucke fforte, or to the house of Capt. John Ffloud, and to no other place or places of the south side of the river, att which places the aforesayd badges of striped stuffe are to be and remaine." ***"Be it also inacted that Capt. John Ffloud be interpreter for the collony, and that for his service therin and transporting such indians as shall be employed from thme to tyme to the Gov'r. in message or otherwise, he is to be allowed from the publique the salary of four thousand pounds of tob'o. yeerly." ("Virginia Historical Genealogies" by John Bennett Boddie, pg 301, 302"

"John Flood had become so proficient in the language of the Indians and so tactful in his dealings with them that he was made official interpreter for the Colony, and the Indians were commanded to go to no other but to his home or Fort Henry on the south side of the river when they had a message for the Governor". ("My Southern Families" pg.330)

"THE ANCIENT PLANTERS OF SURRY"

From the musters given in a former chapter, it appears that in 1625 there were four plantations then existing "over the water". These were the plantations of "Burrows Hill", "Paces Paines", and those owned by Captain Roger Smith and Mr. Edward Blaney. In Hog Island were two more plantations, those of Captain Ralph Hamor and Sir George Yeardley.

The musters show that several of the inhabitants came over before 1616 and were therefore entitled to be called "Ancient Planters", for they had come over before "the coming away of Sir Thomas Dale" who left Virginia for England, November 1616. As Ancient Planters they were entitled to have 100 acres of free land. Other special legislatiion was enacted for their benefit, for the General Assembly of March 5, 1623/25, provided, "That all old planters that were here before or came in at the coming of Sir Thomas Gates, they and their posterity shall be exempted from personal service to the wars and any public charge (church dities excepted). This act appears to literally mean that not only they ---but their descendants--- were exempt from service as soldiers and payment of taxes. One wonders if these privileges were ever claimed.

Ancient Planters, who either resided in or owned land in Surry, with the date of their arrivals, were, John Flood, Swann 1610. Along with 12 others. ("Colonial Surry" by John B. Boddie, Chapter VI, "The Ancient Planters of Surry")

John Flood came to Virginia when he was about fifteen years old, as it is thought he was born in 1595, and he arrived in The Swan in 1610. He was one of the fortunate ones to survive the terrible hardships of the early days of the first permanent English Colony in the New World: between the years 1607 and 1625 six-sevenths of those who came from England died or were massacred. He lived until 1658 and proved to be an important man in Virginia.

CONFLICT: "He was married to MRS. WILLIAM "MARGARET" FINCH about 1624."
"He married second Fortune Jordan, sister of Colonel George Jordan and Arthur Jordan of Surry County."

"John Flood was baptised on 18 April 1591/2 at Canterbury St. Paul, Kent, and first came to Virginia in 1610 on the "Swan". He was the founder of the family in Virginia, and if Richard Flood is the same as the person of that name baptised on. 24 April 1607 at Canterbury St. George the Martyr he would be his cousin... [see Historical Southern Families, pp. 301-308; Adventurers of Purse and Person, pp. 175-177 for the Flood Family of Virginia.].

In about 1835, He moved his family to Indian lands, and settled near Springdale, MS, near his brother Lindsey, who had been living in the area some six or seven years. Lafayette Co. MS was formed in 1836 from the Chicksaw Cession and the land was opened up for settlement. Willis acquired several hundred acres of land, probably through military and other land grants. Many of these records can be found in Oxford, Coffeeville, and Water Valley, MS.
