"Thomas had two wives, one unknown. Because his children listed in the St. Edmunds Parish Records, Dudley, Staffordshire, England, were born in quick order, it is guessed by me, that he married his second wife after his known children were born.
These same records have a clue to his mother's name. The year after he had his first daughter, Roose Bagley, a Roose Bagley married John Grove (1563). This Roose could be his sister or his widowed mother. In either case, Roose is a family name of import for him to name his first daughter it. I highly suspect that his mother's name is Roose, and possibly a sister's name is Roose also.

As to his father, there was a Richard Bagley who died in Mar. 1573 and a Roger, whose wife died in 1566. These could be possible fathers or brothers to Thomas, with Richard being the name carried down to one of his sons. The only known Bagley at this point in time of correct age to be a grandparent to Thomas in the Dudley, England region was Robert Bagley, (b.abt 1585) a name also carried down in the lines. Probate, 8 Oct 1588, , co. Worcestershire, ENG." [S3086]

Captain John Holloday, II, (Thomas I), Captain of Virginia Rangers of Spotsylvania County, Virginia where he was located in 1702. Lived on East Creek in Southwest part of County where he is buried. Home called Bellefonte, from springs near by. An act of Virginia Assembled ordered court to be held in the home of John Holloday until court house could be completed.

Session was held in Captain John's son's house, John junior, April 7th, 1779. Always called John Holloday Gent. Wife Anne Lewis (or Elizabeth). Find him as witness to many wills and deeds in Spotsylvania County.

He died November 4th, 1742. Will proved at St. Georges Parish, King William County, December 7th, 1742. Witness John Waller, John Waller, junior and Thomas Cartwright. Ex. sons Joseph and Benjamin and son-in-law Thomas Pulliam.

Hayden, p. 358.
"Court met at the house of John Holliday, junior, on Wednesday, April 7th, 1779, as John the first (Captain John) was then dead, and John II, who died June 1780 was then John Holliday, senior, the John in question was a son, if not a nephew of John II."

An abstract of the lawsuit of Robert A. Coleman and Mary Coleman, his wife, v. Lewis Holliday in the Fredericksburg District Court in 1807 can be viewed at "http:// www.rootsweb.com/~vacfrede/crd/fbdc_h.htm" (you have to click on the "Holladay/Holliday/Holloday" index headings to find the document). It apparently discusses a property dispute involving 5000 acres of land in Spotsylvania Co., VA which was originally granted to James Taylor in 1722. My interpretation of the tracing of this property goes like this:
a. Deed of James Taylor to John Holladay in 1729;
b. Devise by John Holliday in his will dated 1742 to Joseph Holliday and Benjamin Holliday. John Holliday may have died in King William Co., VA or there is some other King William Co., VA connection related to this devise;
c. Deeds of Joseph Holliday and Benjamin Holliday to Zachary/Zachariah Lewis in 1746-1747;
d. Devise by Zachary Lewis to Benjamin Lewis by will dated 1764/1765;
e. Deed of Benjamin Lewis to Betty Littlepage, widow of James Littlepage, in 1773;
g. Deed of Betty Littlepage to John Lewis in 1774 (part of property);
g. Betty Littlepage married Lewis Holliday, giving him an interest in remaining part of the property;
i. Deed of Lewis Holliday (and Betty?) to Joseph Holliday 1778;
j. Devise of Joseph Holliday to Benjamin and James Holliday by will in 1795 and deeds from the executors of Joseph Holliday to Benjamin and James Holliday to complete this devise.

from THE HOLLADAY FAMILY By Alvis Milton Holladay, Sr. the following:
Captain John Holladay of Spotsylvania County married Elizabeth __________. His will probated December 7, 1742 names the following children. (1) William, (2) John, Jr. died 1780-1, will dated June 17, 1780; proved Aug 16, 1781. Leaves estate to his wife and child unnamed; (3)Daniel; (4) Joseph died July 24,1705 married Betty Lewis; (5) Benjamin died 1785 - names Grandson, Benjamin, daughters, Susannah Agnes, Sarah, Martha, Mary and Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Pulliam, Nancy, wife of John Rawlings, Ex's. son-in-law Joseph Pulliam. Evidently had no son. Names as legatee "John Holladay"; (6)Elizabeth married Pattison (sp?) Pulliam; (7) Winifred married Thomas Pulliam; (8) Sarah married James Rawlings, Jr. - had 6 sons and 6 daughters; (9) Susannah.

In reading the aforementioned authored narrative - the following:
(1) At the time of John's death in 1742, all of the children were married except Susannah, the youngest.
(2) Joseph Holladay, son of John and Elizabeth married Elizabeth (Betty) Lewis, daughter of Harry Lewis.
(3) "Probably the oldest child of John and Elizabeth Holladay, Elizabeth was born 1702-03 likely on Darrell's Creek in King William (eastern Caroline) County.
(4) Third son of John the Ranger, David was born about 1712 probably in King William
(5)Second daughter of John Holladay - Winifred born ca 1714 in King William (Caroline) Co. C
(6) 6th child of the Ranger - Joseph, born ca 1718 in King William County. Joseph and brother, Benjamin, were executors of their father's will in 1742 - they each must have been 21 years of age.
(7) Benjamin born ca 1722 - Purely a deduction - I do not have a date.
(8) Sarah Holladay - 3rd daughter of John the Ranger born 1724
(9) Susannah born 1728 - was underage when her father died - old enough to choose her guardians - she chose her sister Sarah and James Rawlings. Therefore,
(1) Elizabeth born 1702-03 married Patterson Pulliam (2) Joseph Penn
(2) William born 1705 married Judith Holladay
(3) John Holladay II born 1708 married (1) Elizabeth Rawlings, (2) Tabitha (Collins) Gatewood
(4) Daniel born 1712 married Agnes Matthews
(5) Winifred born 1714 married Thomas Pulliam
(6) Joseph born 1718 married (1) Mary Fannie Johnson (2) Elizabeth Lewis
(7) Benjamin born 1722
(8) Sarah born 1724 married James Rawlings, Jr.
(9) Susannah born 1728

There is a big descrepency in dates shown by Alvis Milton Holladay, Sr.and other genealogists.

Regarding Ged Com File at the World Ancestry Tree site - CONFLICTING INFO - John Holladay/Holliday born 20 April 1676 in Jamestown, Va. died 4 November 1742 in St. George Parish, Spotsylvania County, Va who married Ann Elizabeth Lewis. I believe Joseph, son of John and Elizabeth married Elizabeth Lewis after his first wife, Mary Fannie Johnson died.
