Capt. John MCCANTS I

ABT 1700 - 1759

ID Number: I7348

  • TITLE: Capt.
  • OCCUPATION: of Briton's Neck
  • RESIDENCE: County Down, IRE;1737 Prince Frederick Parish, of Briton Creek, Craven Co. SC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1700, County Down, IRE
  • DEATH: 1759, Of Britton Creek, Williamsburg Dist. SC
  • RESOURCES: See: Probably John Notes [S11] [S13] [S446] [S630] [S688] [S985] [S1322] [S1862]
Father: David MCCANTS Sr. "the Immigrant"
Mother: Elizabeth SCOTT?

Family 1 : Dorothy COMMANDER
  1. +John MCCANTS II
  2. +Elizabeth MCCANTS

Notes

Jan 15, 1734, The first reference we find to the family in SC shows that John McCanse and two others appeared before a Justice as appraisers of the goods and chattels of William McCanse. On Nov 25 1734 John McKanse and James MacKanse were appointed appraisers of the estate of William MacKanse as directed by his widow Isabella, administratrix. John and James may be sons of David and Brothers or Nephews of William.

"History of Williamsburg", Boddie: ...John was one of the Commissioners, appointed 25 May 1745, for cutting and clearing the lakes and water courses in the swamp at the head of Black Mingo Creek and to make the stream navigable for flats and canoes. The Commissioners were allowed to chage toll rates on everything passing through the canal and required to render an account yearly of the money collected by them. ( p.62).

John may have some descendants but the records are not clear. None of the McCants heads of families in the 1810 SC census appear to be descendants of John. Apparently his wife preceeded him as no mention of her is made in his will of 1759.

"Greetings; I, John McCants of Prince Frederick Parish, Craven County-planter-for love and affection for my sister, Abigail Smith, and my cousines (he named them but instead of being cousins they were probably nieces and nephews, children of Abigail) John, Elizabeth, Samuel and Hannah Smith of the same parish and county assigns all and singular the cattle now in my possession marked as follows, a short crop in one ear and the other long with an under half penny and branded thus "I.S."
Sealed and signed in the presence of John McCants (Jr.??) Signed: 31 May 1759 - the 32 year of King George II; Signed (witnessed): Joshua Screven and John Commander.

On 3 June 1759, John Commander of Black Mingo made oath that he saw Captain John McCants of Briton Neck sign the above instrument.

It is not known whether John McCants was a son of David, brother, nephew or cousin. One account indicates John was a nephew, however, we do know John was one of the first settlers of Craven Co. On June 1, & 2 1736, John McCants witnessed a transaction transferring land from Samuel Commander, the younger, Elizabeth Commander, Elisha Screven and John Commander to Josiah Smith. The proceeds were for the use of Abigail, Dorothy, Frances and Rachel, daughters of Samuel Commander, the elder. This land consisted of two plantations, a total of 770 acres, in St. Thomas' Parish, Berkeley County. The elder Samuel Commander had ordered by will dated September 17, 1733 the sale and the money divided equally amongst his four daughters. The two plantations sold for L 1540 Shillings Currency. It is thought that John McCants married this Dorothy Commander sometime prior to June 1748, as on June 1 & 2 1748, John McCants, Planter, and Dorothy, his wife, transferred the below purchased land to Elisha Screven.

A deed recorded Feb 21 & 22, 1739 transfers land from William Brockinton, Gentleman, and Sarah, his wife, to John McCants, Planter, all of Winyaw, Craven County, for L 884:10 Schillings currency, 488 acres (of which 288 acres is part of 400 acres granted Paul Berneau on June 4, 1735, the other 200 acres having been granted to Brockington); in Craven county, bounding NW on Mr. Hunter; NE on John Thomson; SE on Capt. Brockington; SW on James Cambell. Wit: by Richard (his mark) Walker, Thomas Potts, and James Lane before John Wallis, Justice of the Peace.

On Mar 27 & 28, 1743, John McCants witnessed a conveyance of land from Peter Lane, Planter, and Sarah, his wife, to Marmaduke Bell, also a Planter, all of Craven Co. Also, on November 19 & 20, 1761, John McCants with William Snow and Malachi Murfee witnessed a transfer of land from the Rev. Mr. John Brown and Sarah (her mark) his wife, to James Saunders, Planter, both of Pedee, Craven Co.

- One David McCants obtained a grant of land on July 5, 1740. David apparently died by 1759, as on Mar 23, 1759, John and James McCants transferred land belonging to David to Alexander McKnight. Probate records of SC between 1746 and 1785 indicate the dates of death of James McCants as April 3, 1772 and John McCants as July 1, 1772, however no David McCants is listed.

About April of 1769, John McCants was appointed one of the commissioners for clearing Black Mingo Creek to make it navigable and also about this same time gave a Negro girl to his cousin, Elizabeth McCants.

The death of John McCants of Prince Fredericks Parish is recorded in SC Probate Records as July 1, 1772. It appears that the John McCants recorded in these various records is one and the same, however, with the reference to different Parishes, there may also be two Johns; One, son of David McCants and one, brother of David McCants. A third John may be the son of John and Dorothy Commander McCants.
