CRENSHAW, ELKANAH. Est. I&A d. (no date given), ret. & rec. 27 Aug 1772. Appr. John (X) Cumpton, Richard Phillips & Edmund Walker. Val. 498/14/6. Slaves: Negro woman Daphney; men James & Joe; woman Phillis; children Frank & Rachel.

WILL: CRENSHAW, ELKANAH. d. 19 Sep 1771, probated 26 Mar 1772. Wit.Mary Austen, William Giles & Samuel Bentley. Ex, Wife (no name given), bro. Charles Crenshaw, friends John Austin & William Brittain. Leg:
Son David Crenshaw, upper half tract of land I now live on.
Son Anthony Crenshaw, lower half above mentioned tract.
Son William Winston Crenshaw, 200 pounds current money to be laid out for land by my Ex.Wife (no name given) all my real and pers. est. for life or widowhood to bring up & educate my children; should she marry, then she tales a child's part, and all the rest my Negroes & pers. est. to be equally div. at that time among all my children or their heirs. Sd. wife to give either of my children when they become 21 or marry so many Negroes & other est. as she thinks the est. can afford at that time. Should my wife marry, the part she takes as a child's part to be equally div. among all my children or their heirs at her death.

Elkanah Crenshaw (born circa 1730; died 1771 ) was living in Amelia County certainly as early as 1754 (in which year his eldest child, David , was born there). Elkanah Crenshaw lived on land which most probably he obtained by inheritance as there is no deed of conveyance in Amelia County to him for the land. His "home place" is identified by the fact that he bequeathed "the upper half" thereof to his son, David Crenshaw , and "the lower half" thereof to his son, Anthony Crenshaw .*

In April, 1800, David Crenshaw sold to Mary Tabb two tracts of land in Amelia , one of which is described as "containing 200 acres in Amelia County, adjoining said Mary Tabb and Anthony Crenshaw, Senr. , and Appomattox River , being the tract devised to the said David Crenshaw by his father Elkanah Crenshaw ."*

In the solution of the question as to how Elkanah Crenshaw obtained his land in Amelia in all probability lies the answer to the question as to his father's name. Elkanah Crenshaw 's "home plantation" in Amelia evidently consisted of 400 acres of land, as he bequeathed half of this tract his son David and half to his son Anthony , and David in selling his portion thereof to Mary Tabb , in 1800, states that it contained 200 acres and that it was located on Appomattox River . On January 17, 1744 , one David Crenshaw , of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County , purchased from Abraham Echolls, 400 acres in Amelia County on south side Appomattox River.* Amelia County records do not show any reconveyance of this land by David Crenshaw to whom it was sold. In June, 1788, there was "a division of the personal estate and negro slaves of Elkanah Crenshaw, deceased, and David Crenshaw, deceased, agreeable to their last wills and testaments between the heirs of Elkanah Crenshaw, deceased."* Elkanah Crenshaw's heirs were legatees under the will of a certain David Crenshaw .*

These recited facts taken together makes it seem probable that David Crenshaw, of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover, who purchased in 1744 the 400 acre tract of land on Appomattox River, Amelia County, gave that tract of land to Elkanah Crenshaw, and, furthermore, provided certain personal estate for the children of Elkanah Crenshaw. Therefore it seems probable that the said David Crenshaw, of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, was father of Elkanah Crenshaw, of Amelia County. Elkanah Crenshaw had a brother, Charles Crenshaw, who was named as an executor in his will; but, of him no further trace has been obtained."

"David Crenshaw, and William Winston Crenshaw an Infant, by David Crenshaw, his next friend, John Muse and Lucy, his wife, William Gray and Susannah, his wife, Anthony Crenshaw and Mildred Crenshaw Pltfs. vs. William Britian, Executor and Mary Crenshaw , Executrix, of Elkanah Crensha , decd. Defts. This cause was this day heard upon the Bill and answer and other exhibits. By consent of the parties. It is considered, declared and ordered that the Defendant Mary, the executrix, and Complaintant, David Crenshaw do make up an account on oath of the administration of the Estate of Elkanah Crenshaw, decd. in the Bill mentioned and prayed for before Richard Eggleston, Wm. Bentley, Wm. Giles, Edmund Walker, John Royall and John Archer or any two or more of them and that the said Richard Eggleston &c., or any two or more of them do divide the slaves and personal property and other estate of the said Elkanah Crenshaw, decd. contained comprized, devised in the general clause, or clauses of his will and testament and also the negroes devised by David Crenshaw, decd. as in the Bill mentioned with their increase and any estate devised by the said David and not already devised among the complainants according to each ones proportion and distribution part; securing to the Defendant, Mary at the same time such compensation as she shall require and such as is just and reasonable as a compensation for her consent to the division of said estate not excluding Twenty four Pounds per annum, and the negro woman in the Bill and for answer mentioned, and that they report to the Court their proceedings herein in order for a final decree.
