Chester Upton of Jackson, MS is preparing a detailed genealogy of the family. "John and William, the twins, were so nearly alike that it was difficult at times to tell them apart. William had a small dimple in one cheek which was the only means to distinguish them."

In the 1850 census these boys are listed in the Gorman or Norman family, ages, 14, 12, and the twins 10.

Alice GLOVER

1663 - BEF 1729

ID Number: I82374

  • RESIDENCE: England and Cecil Co. MD and Chester Co. PA
  • BIRTH: 1663, Kings Cleare, co. Hampton, ENG
  • DEATH: BEF 1729
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3086]
Father: George GLOVER "the Immigrant"
Mother: Alice LAMBALL

Family 1 : John BRUNSDEN "the Immigrant"
Family 2 : William VESTAL Sr. "the Immigrant"
  1.  William VESTAL Jr.

Notes

"Her name is spelled Allice, Alice and Alica depending on which first had source she is found in. (C-804) Vickie Leimback believes her birthplace to be Ichingswall, Kingsclere, Southhampton, England. (C-611) She is mentioned owning land under her first husband's name in a description of the Birmingham/Concord road passing it in Oct. 1687. It suggests that she was a widow at the time, not yet married to William Vestal. Her first husband and her parents were Quakers. She was condemned for marrying her second husband out of unity, but was taken back into the Quaker church when she made a public apology for it. Within several years, she converted to the Baptist faith where she was baptised at Brandywine on the 6th month, 10th day, 1697 or 1698. Researchers suggest that her husband was probably already a member when Alice joined. The other possibility is that she and her daughter, Hannah, also baptised, were led away from friends by George Keith who had caused many problems for the Quaker church. (C-804, 2141)

After her second husband's death, on March 26, 1709, Alice Vastall and son William were offically deeded 125 acres of land previously agreed upon by her late husband William Vastall and Benjamin Mendenhall. Her late husband had built a house on the land and willed it to his wife and son William at his death. This son owned this same land in 1729 indicating that she had died by then. (C-2141)"

John W. GRAVES

15 Oct 1770 - 21 Jan 1858

ID Number: I41308

  • RESIDENCE: Wilkes and Franklin Co. GA and 1802 Amite, Marion and Simpson Co. MS
  • BIRTH: 15 Oct 1770, Georgia [200019]
  • DEATH: 21 Jan 1858, Simpson Co. Mississippi
  • RESOURCES: See: [S450] [S1171] [S2725]
Father: James GRAVES
Mother: Mary COPELAND

Family 1 : Sarah WARREN

Notes

"John moved to Amite County, Ms in 1802 from Wilkes County (now Lincoln Co), Georgia. His purchase of land in Amite County is recorded in land records reprinted in Amite County, Mississippi. Various records indicate that John later settled in Marion County, Mississippi, where he helped lay out the county seat of Columbia. He moved to Covington County in 1819 or early 1820 and he and his wife, Sarah, died in Simpson County, Mississippi in 1858. They are thought to be buried at the Robert Magee cemetery, old Jaynesville, or at the old cemetery 3 or 4 miles north of Jaynesville on the east bank of Silver Creek on the Brooks Berry place, probably the latter.

They are thought to be the ancestors of all the Graves later living in the Lone Star community east of Prentiss, then in Covington County, now in Jefferson Davis County.

According to the Robert Magee bible, the children of John and Sarah Graves were Margaret (1795-1800), John Jr (b. 1800), Humphrey, Jane, Angie, Middleton, and maybe another daughter. {Descendants of James Graves and Mary Copeland of VA and GA, http//www.gravesfa.org/gen150.htm]"

Children:
2 Benjamin GRAVES b: 1792 d: 1870 + Elizabeth O. NESMITH (this Benjamin is son of Francis Graves see his record for proof.)

  1. +WALERAN de NEWBURGH 4th Earl of Warwick

Notes

de NEWBERG. Roger de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Warwick; born c 1102; married Gundred, elder daughter of William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey, by Elizabeth/Isabel, widow of his (Roger's) uncle, 1st Earl of Leicester, and died 1153. [Burke's Peerage].

"Roger de Newburgh, 2nd Earl of Warwick. This nobleman, in the contest between the Empress Maud and King Stephen, espoused the cause of the former, but his lordship is much more known by his munificent grants to the church than his martial deeds. He married Gundred, daughter of William, Earl of Warren, and had issue, William and Waleran, successive earls, Henry, and Agnes. The earl died 12 June, 1153, and was succeeded by his eldest son, William de Newburgh, 3rd Earl of Warwick.
[Sir Bernard Burke, Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage, Ltd., London, 1883, p. 399, Newburgh, Earls of Warwick]

Roger, the eldest son of Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Warwick, held the earldom from 1123 until his death in 1153. As a member of the powerful Beaumont group, Roger was deeply involved in the struggle between Stephen and the empress Matilda (Maud). The next earls were two of his sons.
