RE: Buckholts Research

Don - Thank you for the summary of information concerning Heinrich Buchholtz (Henry Buckholts) and Jacob Buckholts. You and your group are right on track. We have covered much of the same ground and have come to many of the same conclusions. I am encouraged that someone else has tied the South Carolina Buckholts to the Pennsylvania Buchholtz rather than trying to go from South Carolina back to "Prussia."

HEINRICH BUCHHHOLTS (HENRY BUCKHOLTS): Your summary includes reference to a deed that I was not aware of:"1689 Henry Buckholtz purchased 240 acres of land from John Henery and Anna Margaret Kersten." This is an important document, and I would like to know how to locate and get a copy of it.

You mention an article by C. R. Haller in the Mennonite Family History Magazine. In Haller's book "Across the Atlantic and Beyond - The Migration of German and Swiss Immigrants to America" he gives convincing evidence that Heinrich and Marie Buchholtz came from Kreisheim on the Rhine River in Germany and that Heinrich's father probably was Peter Buchholts (Peter Buchholtzer). You might want to check out that reference. It contains much other interesting information and is for sale. Some of your deeds for Jacob were for land in Chester County PA where Henry and Jacob moved in about 1718 [unless the deeds were also recorded in Philadelphia County, of which I am not aware]. However, you did not mention the Chester County tax lists:

Henry Buckholts died in about 1726, and his estate was probated in Philadelphia County (ADMINSTRATION 6, YEAR 1726).

JACOB BUCKHOLTS: Your summary also includes reference to a another deed in "1734; Jacob and Catherine Buckholts sold 240 acres of land to Ulrich Reinhardt." This is an important document in as much as it names Jacob's wife. Again, I would like to know how to locate and get a copy of it.

According to abstracts in Holcombe's book "Petitions for land from the South Carolina Council Journals Volume I: 1734/5-1748," James Gordon at the council meeting held on the 7th March 1735/35 petitioned for an substistence allowance for settlers lately arrived from Philadelphia.
Jacob Buckholts' land grants in the Queensborough Township were surveyed in January 1735, indicating that the Buckholts family emmigrated to South Carolina in early 1734. Your deed from Jacob and Catherine Buckholts to Ulrich Reinhardt also may help tie the year down. I have not been able to exactly locate Jacob's Queensborough tracts, but they were on the SW side of the Pedee River in what is now Florence County.

In the same book is the abstract of a petition where Jacob Buckholts petitioned the council for 250 acres of land in the Welch Tract-he being a Pennsylvanian and having sworn to his family right. That grant was on the SW side of the Pedee River a few miles south of Society Hill in Darlington County, SC. That is where I think Jacob spent most of the rest of his life. According to Rudisell's "The Diaries of Evan Pugh [1762-1801]," on 20 December 1783, Rev. Pugh "Went to old Mr. Buckholts funeral at Cash'y." This, I think, was Jacob Buckholts' funeral. If so, he was in his late eighties when he died.

I have hypothetically reconstructed Jacob's family as having been: (1) Henry Buckholts, (2) Elizabeth Buckholts [who married Jonathan Cratchley, then William Megee], (3) Abraham Buckholts [who married Elizabeth Woodward], (4) Jacob Buckholts, Jr., (5) Peter Buckholts [whose wife was Mary], (6) Mary Buckholts [who married John Dexter], and (7) Anthony Buckholts. Therefore, I believe that the Abraham, Jacob, and Peter Buckholdt mentioned in Rev. Gregg's book "History of the Old Cheraws" were the children of our Pennsylvania ancestor Jacob Buckholts.

As I said before, the documents probably do not exist to "prove" the complex relationships of the Buckholts family in South Carolina, especially when considering the passing down of names. Wills or probate do not exist for most of this family and marriage data is scarce. The information I have seen on the internet and published in the World Family Tree Volumes is confused and mostly wrong. These people have not considered time as related to generations, and they have skipped some.

My line is from Abraham (son of the Pennsylvania Jacob), who had a son Jacob who migrated to Mississippi in the early 1800's. My Jacob had a son William H. Buckholts who married an Elizabeth Brashears, a part Choctaw Indian. The descendants of William H. Buckholts left some confused genealogical notes, which are difficult to dispute. I have seen that at times they have claimed descent from Peter and also that my Jacob's wife was Mary Smith - she was Sarah Hodge. There are other confusions concerning the Mississippi Buckholts because of information on an Abraham Buckholts (Buckles) that was published in the early DAR records. I decided some time ago that I do not have the time or inclination to confront these people and straighten out their genealogy. It is too complex, and I can not support my conclusions with single documents that "prove" relationships.

With this in mind, I have provided the above information to you because your group is on the right track. I will be glad to correspond with you by email about specifics. But, I must warn you that the time I have to devote to Buckholts research is limited. Do you have any future plans to publish or otherwise distribute your research? - Bill
***************
Abraham & Jacob fought in The French & Indian Wars. Peter was in the Welch Tract. They are said to have left the area early.

Abraham BUCKHOTLS (Sr) & his sons Abraham (Jr) & Jacob are named as members of the Catfish Baptist Church at its formal constitution on the 3rd of October 1752, Marion Co. SC. That would mean the sons had to be adults or at least older teens.

Jacob BUCKLES is listed in the list for delinquent land grants in Queensborough township, 250 Acres, 24 May 1740.

I think the Jacob, son of Abraham (Sr) is the one that married Mary SMITH, daughter of John SMITH, IV. (My 4th GGF) [S817] [S839] [S800] [S839] [S840] [S841] [S817]
