James' occupation: Farmer. James immigrated, 19 Oct 1739. Destination: Port of Philadelphia PA. James's will was probated in Augusta Co. VA, 19 Nov 1776.
He married twice.

He married Jean (Jane) Warwick circa 1739.Jean was born circa 1720. Jean was the daughter of WilliamWarwick and Elizabeth Dunlap. Jean died 1758 in Augusta Co. VA, at 38 years of age.

He married Jean (Unknown) Gay in Augusta Co. VA, after 1758. Jean died October 1780 in Rockbridge Co.VA. Jean's will was probated in Rockbridge Co. VA, 7 Nov. 1780.
Jane Gay Stevenson, daughter of James and his first wife, Jean Warwick, states in her interview with Rev. John D. Shane in the Draper Manuscript Collection, Wisconsin State Historical Library, that "my father came from Ireland when he was a boy, and was on the frontier a long time before he married."

James and his brothers were among the earliest settlers in western Augusta County, VA. James was settled on his land on the Little Calfpasure River by 1743. He built a fort, or blockhouse, on his land for protection of his family and neighbors. Apparently they lived pretty much in peace with the Indians until about1757 with the outbreak of the French and Indian War, for Jane, in her interview, stated "I was forted from the time I was 7 years old (1757), and was never rid of the Indians until I moved to Pisgah, KY (1784)". She said that they lived about 7 miles from Kerr's Creek, and that her mother was killed by Indians in 1758, or at near the time of the first Indian attack on the Kerr's Creek settlement. The second attack, the Massacre of Kerr's Creek, occurred 17 July 1763. Jane reported that she had an uncle and cousin killed during that attack. Since no Gays are known to have been killed, the uncle was prbably a Warwick, brother of her mother. The cousin may refer to little Andrew, son of Eleanor (Gay) Kinkead, who was killed by the Indians after being taken captive. Jane stated that she and Samuel, her husband, were first cousins.
Jane says, "Where we lived (as a child) was about 35 miles from Staunton. No Lexington then. The country was newly settled. We attended Providence Meeting House (Presbyterian). Old Mr.John Brown preached there then. The men carried their guns to meetings, as regularly as the congregation met. Communion services generally lasted 3 to 4 days." Mr. John Brown also pastored Old Timber Ridge Church..
On 26 Sep 1760, James received Patent #34, 1771-2, p. 733, for 425 acres on a branch of the Cowpasture River called Cromby's Creek. On 2 Sept 1773, James and Jane, his wife, sold this land to their son, John Gay. John would have been 25 years of age. However, in 1794 the land appears again in a deed, sold by John Gay and Sarah his wife, and James Gay, his brother, to Henry Rucker "made to said John and James in last Will andTestament.", apparently referring to land James. Sr. devised to James, "adjoining John in the Cowpasture." Both John and James.Jr. were in Kentucky by the time of the sale.

In her interview with Rev. Shane, Jane says, "In 1776, my father, James Gay, Samuel Stevenson, Ben Blackburn and William Elliott went out to Kentucky and back in June, I think." This was only two years after James Harrod led his group into Kentucky to lay out Harrodsburg, a very hazardous time to be in Kentucky because of Indian raids into that area. Some Gay family researchers report that James, Jr. led this expedition to Kentucky. Jane's interview definitely says it was her father. James Jr. would have been a bit on the young side to have led such a foray.
James died in Nov 1776, the same year he explored Kentucky.

George West Diehl in Rockbridge Notebook says this James was born in Ireland.
