GEORGE PLANTAGENET Duke of Clarence

21 Oct 1449 - 18 Jan 1477

ID Number: I28049

  • OCCUPATION: Earl of Warwick
  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: 21 Oct 1449
  • DEATH: 18 Jan 1477, Executed in Tower of London [143177]
  • BURIAL: Tewkesbury, ENG
  • RESOURCES: See: Notes [S1049] [S2120] [S3521]
Father: RICHARD OF YORK PLANTAGENET Earl of Cambridge
Mother: CICELY de NEVILLE

Family 1 : ISABEL de NEVILLE
  1.  EDWARD PLANTAGENET 18th Earl of Warwick
  2. +MARGARET PLANTAGENET Countess of Salisbury

Notes

The King (Edward IV) had George of Clarence arrested and taken to the Tower on the charge of committing acts violating the laws of the realm and threatening the security of judges and jurors'.

Then, the day after the marriage of Anne Mowbray and the duke of York, Edward brought forward inparliament a bill of attainder against Clarence, charging him with a 'more unnatural and loathly treason than had been found at any time previously during the reign.'.... Edward declared that even after all the charges made, he could still forgive his brother, if he made due submission, but the duke had shown himself incorrigible and the country was demanding his punishment.

This royal bill, discussed in the lords, was assented to by the commons and on 7 February 1478 the duke of Buckingham was appointed to pass sentence. (Rot. Parl. vi, 195). Even after his condemnation to death, Clarence was not immediately executed, for Edward would not give the
word, and the Speaker, William Alyngton, had to ask the lords that the sentence be carried out. Clarence was put to death in the Tower on 18 February, probably by being drowned in a bath. The story of his death in a 'barell of Malmsey wine' is given by (among others) the London Chronicler, but there is no means of checking its accuracy.

(Note: This is he story that reached Philippe de Commmines (i.59). Jean Molinet (Chroniques,1476-1506, ed. Buchon, p. 377) says that Clarence was allowed to decide the manner of his death and made this choice. The report of Olivier de la Marche (Memoires, ed. beaune and d'Arbaumont, iii. 70) that Clarence was drowned 'en ung baine, comme l'on disoit' seems more probable. Cg.Scofield, ii. 209). His body was buried beside that of his wife in Tewkesbury.
