Notes

Widow of Edward RICE. Not Proven dau but circumstantial evidence lends substance: (also have seen surname as Mary WOOTEN)

The 'Jamestowne Society' does not, and will not accept Mary (Claiborne) Rice as a daughter of Wm. Caliborne. the "Order of Charlemagne" does and so did Dr. Harris in a long article in the "Virginia Geneologist.

"The recent Claiborne genealogy compiled by John Frederick Dorman does not include Mary Claiborne m. (1)------Rice; m. (2) Robert Harris. He shows it in a footnote and claims it as unproven." However, W.H. Miller's HISTORY AND GENEALOGY, 1907, which states: "Major Robert Harris was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses from Hanover County, 1736-1738, 1740-1742, and Justice of the Peace of Louisa County in 1742, and Surveyor in 1744."

"His wife, Mary Rice nee Claiborne, was a daughter of Secretary William Claiborne who came to Virginia with George Wyant in 1621. William Claiborne was born in 1587, and died in 1676, he married Elizabeth Butler. He was secretary of state in Virginia in 1625-1635, 1652-1660, treasurer in 1642-1660. Surveyor Gentry in 1621-1625. He was a Justice of the Peace of York and Northumberland in 1653. Member of the Council in 1623. In 1629 he commanded an expedition against the indians; again in 1644, he did the same."

"The first, in support of the Thomas Clayborne Sara Symth James statement is Clayton Torrence, "The English Ancestry of William C. Claiborne of Virginia" The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography LVI pp 328-43, 431-60. There are seven footnotes for the first 14 lines of text. I was shown this book when I attempted to make the Mary Claiborne Rice connection. In fact this book says that Mary can not be proved, and refers the reader to the Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 25, 1981. ("Major Robert Harris (ca. 1630- ca.1701) of New Kent County, Virginia: Was He Real or A Myth?" by Malcom Hart Harris) Here there is a lengthy and seemingly credible attempt to disprove the connection, coming to the conclusion that it is not possible to prove or disprove, but that circumstantial evidence lends substance."

source: Claiborne Pedigree, A geneological table of the descendents of Secretary William Claiborne, of the Junior Branch in the United States, with some other tracings in the female line. Compiled by G.M. Claiborne. Published in Lynchburg, Va by J.P. Bell Company, Book,Job, and Commercial Printers, 1900. lists Mary as a dau along with a number of her descendents.

"The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy", page 409." states that Mary was the youngest daughter of William Claiborne, the first Secretary of the Virginia Colony."

Carolyn, Dr.G.M. Claibornes pedigree contains the following line of descent for Mary Claiborne and Harris- issue of #6 Mary Claiborne ; #865, William Harris- m, Temperance Overton w/issue #867; #867 Major Robert Harris Justice of the pease Louisa Co.Va. in 1742 m. Morning Glenn w/issue #868; #868 Lucy Harris dau of R.H. m. William Shelton w/issue 869; # 869 ; from this point the surnames listed in order of descent ---Woods--Goodloe----Hart----then several Shelbys as siblings. Harold

THERE IS NO MARY CLAIBORNE WHO WAS A DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM CLAIBORNE!

WILLIAM CLAIBORNE HAD NO SECOND DAUGHTER NAMED MARY!

ROBERT HARRIS OF NEW KENT IN 1662 WAS NOT MARRIED TO ANYONE NAMED MARY CLAIBORNE RICE!
