Notes

"Michel Douradou BRINGIER, b. at sea on 6th December, 1789, bought “White Hall” from the other BRINGIER heirs on the death of his father by act dated the 11th June, 1821.

Michel Douradou BRINGIER in the 1830's acquired from Seaman FIELD, his brother-in-law, the place then and later known as “Melpomene,” situated in Orleans Parish. This great edifice was latterly completely surrounded by city dwellings, and when the city was built up around, it occupied the center of a square formed by Carondelet, Baronne, Terpsichore and Melpomene Streets, but originally it had been built as a country house, the nearest dwellings or buildings being on Canal Street, then the upper boundary of New Orleans, and about a mile away. When as late as the 1830's New Orleans lay off in the distance. “Visiting the city” was the usual expression employed when any occupant of the place spoke of going to Canal Street or beyond. Carrollton was reached by long drives on country roads and under out-spreading forest trees.

Michel Daradou BRINGIER d. at Memphis, 13th March, 1847. He had built a family vault at Donaldsonville, and he was the first of the family to be buried in it. He was survived by three sons and six daughters.

His eldest son was Marius Ste. Colombe BRINGIER of “White Hall” and “Houmas,” m. his cousin, Augustine TUREAUD, and was father of Marius Ste. Colombe BRINGIER, Jr.,

his second son, succeeded to “The Hermitage,” and m. his cousin Stella TUREAUED, leaving several daughters and four sons, Amedee, Trist, Browse and Du Bourg.

[p.117] Michel Douradou BRINGIER'S eldest daughter, m. Hore Browse TRIST, of Bowden plantation, kinsman and ward of Thomas JEFFERSON, and became mother of Nicholas Browse TRIST, Lieut. Julian Bringier TRIST, killed at the battle of Murfresboro; Nicholas Philip TRIST and Wilhelmine TRIST, who m. Col. Robert WOOD, nephew of Jefferson DAVIS and gd. son of President TAYLOR.

The second daughter of Michel Douradou BRINGIER, namely Louise, bestowed her hand upon Martin GORDON, Jr. to whom were born many daughters and an only son, Martin GORDON, who d. vita patris.

Nanine, the third daughter, m. Duncan Farrar KENNER, Confederate States Congress, having issue, George KENNER and two daughters, the second of whom survives, Rosella, relict of Gen. Joseph Lancaster BRENT.

Aglea, the fourth daughter, m. her cousin, Benjamin TUREAUED, of Tezcuro, and left no male posterity.

Myrthe, the fifth daughter, m. Gen. Dick, TAYLOR, of Fashion plantation, President TAYLOR'S only son, and was survived by three daughters, two of whom intermarried with the STAUFFER family of New Orleans.

The youngest daughter of Douradou BRINGIER, Octavie BRINGIER, became the wife of Gen. Allen THOMAS, of Dalton, Maryland; lately deceased, and one time United States Minister to Venezuela, their issue being four sons."

“White Hall” in the first half of the half century passed temporarily out of the possession of the BRINGIERS. It was sold to Gen. Wade HAMPTON, gd. father of Gen. Wade HAMPTON of Confederate fame, 1825, by Michel Douradou BRINGIER. On the 5th of February, 1848, it was repurchased from the heirs of General HAMPTON by Mme. Aglae Du Bourg BRINGIER, widow of the above mentioned Michel Daradou BRINGIER, and continued in the BRINGIER family (afterwards being the property of her son, Marius Ste. Colombe BRINGIER) until some years after the Civil War.

“Melpomene” on the death of Mme.Dubourg BRINGIER, in 1878, came into the hands of her son-in-law, Duncan F. KENNER, and not long afterwards the dwelling was demolished and the ground surrounding it was divided into lots, and now occupied by rows of modern city houses.

The following quaint account of “White Hall” is from the pen of Abbé DE LA SEICHARDIER, being here freely translated from the original French:

“On the borders of the Parishes of St. James and Ascension, seated picturesquely on the left bank of the great river, was the remarkable plantation of the BRINGIER family. The golden mark of luxury and opulence was stamped upon the place. One saw it in the decorative wrought-iron fence which inclosed the splendid plantation; in the tastefully laid out gardens and in the rare plants and exotic shrubs which they contained. It appeared in the fanciful scenery of a park stocked with game and in the lovely and spacious ponds filled with choice fish.

“Sadness was not supposed to enter this abode of delight. It was no doubt for this reason that the color scheme everywhere was white. The princely residence of the planter was white and so were all the dependencies of the place.

“White Hall” was in a constant state of animation. Visits succeeded visits and feasts succeeded feasts. It was the chosen rendezvous of fashion, of tourists and of [p.118] strangers of renown . . . . Jefferson College, St. Michel Convent, the post office clustered, so to speak, about ‘BRINGIER la Maison Blanche.’

“The Villa absorbed the interest of the entire community, and was called the ‘Capital of St. James.’ But Solomon has said ‘Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.’ Time passed, and what remains of the delicious Creole abode, so hospitable and so charming in its various aspects? A shadow, a memory, a name. The boast of the banks of the Mechacebe (Mississippi) is no more. The nymphs and shouts of laughter are fled from this Eden, and the high weeds have conquered their former ground. Indeed, already the heedless ‘settler’ has arrived and erects here on all sides his tent where arose ‘La Maison Blanche’ in all its splendor.

“One day–about the year 1804, if my information is exact–Monsier DE MARIGNY, the emigrant of 1795, arrived at ‘White Hall’ on an unexpected visit. Three illustrious personages accompanied the old chevalier, the Count DE BEAUJOLAIX, the Duke DE MONTPENSIER and the Duke D'ORLEANS. The descendants of ‘Monsieur,’ brother of Louis XIV, were received with that unalloyed courtesy and frank hospitality which are a proverbial characteristic of the Louisianian. Fetes were given in their honor, which was most conspicuous among all was a great Indian chief shod in moccasins of beaver skin and wearing a mantle of the inner bark of the ash tree. He was the friendly Mico of the Houmas. The French princes did not omit to visit him in his savage hut. . . . .”

IV. Manuscript volumes, 1826-1900 (box 4, range F:9)

Thomas Jefferson Edwards emigrated to Pennsylvania, from R.I. at the age of 31. Originally they lived in a log cabin in "Deep Hollow", the Tamarack Swamp area, where the Scranton Court House now stands. It was probably there that Joseph Edwards one of his sons, was born in 1842.

Notes

"The mother's qualities were masculine understanding, great ambition and impetuosity of humble fortunes, which she brought on herself by marrying a ship carpenter were powerfully resisted. She was, however, left a widow with a family of four daughters and an only son, who was but a stripling at his father's death. After Mr. Preston's death, Mrs. Preston removed to Barger's near Staunton. Her daughters were skillful needlewomen; it was the age of cross-stitch, embroider, etc. They wrought diligently at the business, obtained a sufficiency of money to purchase a negro woman."
