John (Thickpenny) PHIPPEN Gent.

1525 - 1583

ID Number: I102451

  • RESIDENCE: England and Ireland
  • BIRTH: 1525
  • DEATH: 1583
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3707]

Family 1 : Anne HOLTON
  1. +Robert Fitzpen PHIPPEN
  2. +William PHIPPEN

Notes

"During his lifetime he received a number of fiants (warrants) from Queen Elizabeth to do business in Ireland. Among these - Vittler of the garrisons (in Ireland); Impost Collector on imported foods and wines; Commission to import wines himself. She also gave him a great deal of land in Ireland (not in fee simple but usually 21-year leases, including an island.)

After his death his widow, Anne, was allowed to keep the land. He owned the sailing vessels Ventura, Roma, Anne and Ascension. He probably willed the latter to his son Henry, as in his will he paid off debt owed by the master of said ship. These ships probably account for the ease they moved from England to Scotland to Ireland.

Index to Perogative Wills of Ireland - Will of John Thickpenny, Gent. Glassmore, Co. Waterford. original Will, dated 1581, prob. 1583. (The Public Records of Ireland were burned in 1922, when Four Courts were destroyed in the Rebellion.).

Andrew Jackson POLK C.S.A.

10 Aug 1824 - 1 Mar 1867

ID Number: I88548

  • RESIDENCE: Raleigh, NC and of "Ashwood Hall " Maury Co. TN
  • OCCUPATION: CSA Organized "Maury County Braves," Company F, 1st TN Cav Regt
  • BIRTH: 10 Aug 1824
  • DEATH: 1 Mar 1867
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S3027] [S3028]
Father: William POLK
Mother: Sarah HAWKINS

Family 1 :
  1.  Antoinette POLK C.S.A.

Notes

"Leonidas Polk's youngest living brother, Andrew Jackson Polk, owned Ashwood Hall during the War, and part of his fame came from organizing on the mansion's lawn the "Maury County Braves," Company F, 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, which he did on July 5, 1861, being the day after Leonidas Polk reported to Memphis as a Major-General in command of Department Number 2. (During the War, Andrew's cotton was successfully transported through the Union blockade of Southern ports.) His daughter and Leonidas Polk's niece, the Confederate heroine Antoinette Polk, who later became Baronne de Charette, performed the patriotic "Ride of Miss Antoinette Polk," on July 13, 1863. While visiting a cousin's plantation, she was alerted to the approach of the Federal Wilder's Raiders toward her Ashwood Hall home, where a Confederate major-general and staff were headquartered. Leaping on her horse named "Shiloh," she glamorously eluded the pursuing Federal cavalrymen and alerted the Confederates of their impending threat and capture; all escaped. After exclaiming, "Why did you not shoot her in the back?", Union Col. John Wilder then stole over 100 of Andrew Polk's finest horses from Ashwood Hall plantation; two week earlier Wilder had been found at Leonidas Polk's University Place at Sewane destroying the rail road tracks, only to be victoriously chased off the Mountain by Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry.
