Joseph ARDIS

18 Nov 1837 - 28 Nov 1882

ID Number: I99529

  • OCCUPATION: union 1st Alabama Independent Vidette Cavalry, Co. A.
  • RESIDENCE: Madison and Jackson Cos. AL
  • BIRTH: 18 Nov 1837, Madison Co. Alabama
  • DEATH: 28 Nov 1882, Jackson Co. Alabama
  • BURIAL: Tanyard Cem., Holleytree, Jackson Co. Alabama
  • RESOURCES: See: FTW
Father: Thomas ARDIS "the Immigrant"
Mother: Susan POCKUS

Notes

"After mustering out of service of the 1st Alabama Independent Vidette Cavalry Company A (Union Civil War Unit), Joseph Ardis had to hide out in the mountains because of Bushwhackers (Confederate Soldiers)
The reason Joseph and other members of his company had to hide out was that they lived in an area that was full of Confederate Soldiers and southern supporters. At one point while he was in service he had to move his family to a safer place. (I assume it was because of neighbors and enemy soldiers) Joseph lived in Paint Rock Valley of Jackson County, Alabama. (Note: Alabama was a part of the Confederate States of America)"

(my note: There was a small group of Alabama Citizens who joined the union and were traitors to their neighbors - they had knowledge and access to the locals that the union would not have otherwise had - betrayed their neighbors and kin into the hands of the enemy, Lincoln's invading Union Army. jb)

From lempen@aol.com "This Michaud/Michaux/Michau/Mishoe Family File has been collected from notes, Bibles, letters, and meetings with family members by Denise Pendley and her Mother Ellie. When necessary for identification of orign this input will be referred to as "The File". Some years ago, 1956, Dr Paul Mishoe, of Marion SC., initiated a research of the ancestry of the family. He hired a Mr Andrea, title unknown, Gertrude Blaisdel of Genealogical Research, Wash DC., and Mr Harold Delorme, Columbia SC. Philip Mishoe Sr obtained the research files, or at least part of them, and has written a summary of these findings. We will refer to this information as "The Study". A lot of information was taken from the Burke County, NC Heritage Book. We will refer to this as "The Book", and information supplied by the Huguenot Society of SC, referred to as "The Paper".

There are many names that are common and duplicated, others that can not be tied together, relationships that are probably inaccurate, differences in marriages, children, dates, etc., trails of a descendent unsolved. As you read this please keep in mind that this is a draft toward the future. We will retain notes and thinking of a particular time or event, so that you may see our thoughts and direction as we record the trails of this Family Tree. We will try to update, with dates of updates, when new or related information is obtained. There are notes on people which ask questions when the direction/connection is not clear. Please send corrections, additions, questions, etc., to Denise Pendley, 141 Redbank Rd, Goose Creek, SC. 29445 (denpen27@aol.com) or to me, I am lempen@aol.com

It was originally believed by the Study that this Abraham was the son of Abraham Michaux of Virginia, and his family separated from his father when they left London. That this son Abraham and Lydia, came through the Port of Charles Town, South Carolina. My original attempt to outline the ancestry line recorded this as the heritage line. An early attempt was made to combine this Virginia Family with the South Carolina Family. There are no listings in The Book, or The Study, wills recorded, etc., which ties this Abraham/Lydia to the Abraham and Susanne Rochette, of Virginia.

The Study quotes from a book on Williamsburg County, SC, by W W Bodie, as follows: Within the territory of Williamsburg County, and whose names have not been mentioned heretofore, had settled Abraham and Lydia Michaux.

Additional research show that many French Huguenots having fled their native land, after the Edict of Nantes, came through Charles Towne. Doing further research you will find there were eight religious wars in early France between the Catholic party, who were linked to the powerful family of Guise, against the Protestants, between 1500 and 1789. The Edict of Nantes was signed by Henry IV, and gave the French Protestants political rights, religious freedom, and possession of certain fortified towns. Henry XIV revoked this Edict in 1685, all protection of law was withdrawn and the Huguenots were forbidden to own land or to leave the country. However thousands fled many coming to America through the Port of Charles Towne (now Charleston) and moved northward crossing over the Santee River at Lenuds (LeNuds) Ferry to settle in the County of now Berkely and Willaimsburg. Among these were Abraham and Lydia Michaux". It is interesting to note that Julienne Michaux, daughter of Jean (John) Michaux, born 1637, married Albert Nicholaus Lenud. If the Ferry Owner is the same Lenud family, and I believe it is, because a direct descendent of Mishoe is running the Ferry later on. Having a relative here is the reason this Abraham and Family came to this region.

After settling in Craven County, the largest in South Carolina at the time, he aquired 3,398 acres of land, some in the name of his sons. He was one of the original farmers to grow Indigo, from which he supposedly became very wealthy. He had two wives who bore him nine children. Lydia was his second wife. He had three children by his first wife Charlotte, thought by the Huguenot paper, Dr Wilson, to be the step-daughter of his uncle (I can not make the tie), and six children with his second wife Lydia. Dr Wilson is mistakingly identifing Ester Jodon as Charlotte.

March 19, 1999. Today I received a paper published in 1971, by the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. It is a Pedigree study made by the Rev Robert Wilson, of the Huguenot Society, dated 1914. He states that it is the most complete study he has ever done. I have read his text a number of times and still come away confused. Maybe as you read, it will come clear to you.

MICHAU: Quote: The Michau family was also one of those naturalized in 1696, and as in so many other cases the record in the "St Julien List" (I assume this is a pedigree list taken from the Parish Records) is manifestly wrong when tested by the earliest Parish Registers.
(My note: I have found that this is a direct quote, page 61, Huguenot Emigration to America, Settlers on the Santee Chapter, by Baird, published in 1885, earlier to the paper by Rev Wilson. The change is that the names are spelled Michaud). Rev Wilson continues; Tampering with the records is a grave offense in genealogical research. But where the errors are manifest and destroy the possibility of the statements made, it becomes the duty of the compiler to correct them as far as possible. The Liste is our only authority for the early history of the great majority of the Huguenot families in South Carolina. But as we have it, it has come through copies made by various officials, most of them ignorant of French, and most of the errors are not difficult of correction.

For example, Wilson continues; The Michaud/Machau's are said to come from "Ouai" in Pontiou, but there never was such a place, and it does not even sound like French. Of course it is a mispelling for "Onis, Aunis, or Aulney" in all of which forms it occurs. (See Bairds Huguenot Emigration to America, Vol 2, p. 61). I checked page 61 of the book. It says: "de la Ville Dieu d'Onis' ". It further states Aulnay and Villedieu, were former Provinces of Poitou. Further that Pierre and Abraham Michaud, fugutives from La Villedieu, joined the settlement on the Santee River. Page 302, History of Huguenot Emigration, pub 1885, by Charles Baird: Off the Coast of Aunis, and nearly opposite the City of La Rochelle, lies the island of Re, a spot that may be said to rival that city in its claim upon the attention of Americans of Huguenot descent. It is the native place, or the place of refuge, of many families that ultimately found their way to the New World. The Isle of Re is but 16 miles long and 3 miles wide. Many Huguenots of means, leaving the abodes in the interior of the country, had sought this island as a retreat, in hopes of escapaing observation.

Sara Bertonneau, wife of Pierre Michau, had been previously married to Elie Jodon and they had a son, Daniel, and a daughter Ester Jodon. Abraham Michau-Michaud- Michaux, is mentioned as brother to Pierre Michaud, and his wife Ester is the daughter of Elie and Sara Jodon. Abraham, therefore has married his brother Pierre's step-daughter, as Pierre Michaud children are given as Jeanne, Ester and Charlotte, born in South Carolina. The Rev Wilson of the Huguenot study indicates this Charlotte to marry Abraham of South Carolina who later marries Lydia. (My note. This would make him marrying his brothers daughter, or 1st cousin) In the Prince Fredericks Register, we find an Abraham Michau, son of Abraham Michau and Charlotte Michau, born 20 Nov 1723. An older child Julienne had been born 18 Jan 1721, and Peter born 6 Mar 1725. Then follows Daniel, son of Abraham and Lydia Michau, born 22 Jun 1733, followed by Noah, 6 Apr 1735, Paul, 15 Nov 1736, and Lydia, 7 Jan 1738. Sons Abraham, Peter and Daniel are appointed Executors of his Will Will Book 1760-1767, page 643. Legatees are sons: Abraham, the eldest, Peter, Daniel, and William, wife Lydia, daughters Lydia Clegg, her children One shilling sterling and no more, Julienne Perry dead, and to those she had by her first husband as well as the last husband, one hundred pounds, current money of South Carolina.;

The Rev Wilson ask: Who is this Abraham who marries the widow Sara Jodon, with daugther Charlotte and son Daniel Jodon. " It is notable that Charlotte is an almost unique name among these early Huguenots". He states that I have found only one other instance of it occurance. She is almost certianly the Charlotte of the Liste.

My note 11/18/2000. I have studied this often and today I see that he says Charlotte is daughter of Sara and brother to Daniel Jodon. This is where Rev Wilson got confused. Sara's daughter, brother to Daniel is Ester, not Charlotte. Sara does have a daughter named Charlotte, but she is born in South Carolina and Pierre, Abrahams brother is the father. So when he says the Abraham of South Carolina marries Pierre's step-daughter, a girl named Charlotte, he thinks it is this Charlotte, whom in fact is Ester Jodon.

Rev Wilson continues, There is clearly a mistake or omission somewhere and it is most probably in the Liste. "This Charlotte (Statement by Rev Wilson) is clearly the first wife of Abraham Michau, of South Carolina." This would make Abraham marrying the step-daughter his uncle Pierre Michaux. (My note: It is my belief that this Carlotte is not and can not be the first wife of Abraham Michau of South Carolina. There is a Madeleine Unknown, previously married, with daughters Charlotte and Madeleine. She marries Andre Rembert, who only lives about 6 months. In her will she identifies her grandchildren, children of Charlotte and Abraham Michau of South Carolina . There has to be a missing generation here as Rev Wilson says this Abraham is the son of Abraham and Ester Jodon. There is too much age difference for this to happen. He thinks that Charlotte is the step-dau of Pierre, Abrahams uncle. I can not make this connection).

It was originally thought by The Study that this Abraham of SC, was the son of Abraham and Susanne Rochet of Virginia. However this idea can no longer be considered. Abraham of Va married Susanne Rochet, July 1692, and came to Va in 1701-1705. Their son Abraham was never married, he was born about 1707, died in Va. in 1747, and is the Abraham Michaux of the Oral Will. Therefore he could not have been the Abraham married to Charlotte/Lydia, coming thru the Port of Charleston. I originally combined the the files of the two families as that was the route the Study undertook, but the computer program has enabled me to somewhat keep up with all the Abraham's a little better and provided me concrete evidence that the two lines are not inter-connected. Their ancestry has been redrawn and is now separately listed and maintained until a connection can be established.

Among the English Huguenot Registers, and the Internet, we find in the French Church, Threadneedle St. the baptism 8 Dec 1633, of Abraham Michau, son of Jean. From 1640 to 1684 this same Register list 10 more entries of Michau in various forms of spelling. One of which is 1684 of Daniel Michau, "et sa femme" (and his wife). The Waloon Church of Canterbury has 6 such entries from 1694 to 1718.

GUERRY (GUERRI): The lines of Guerry, Rembert, Michau, DuPont and Cromwell of South Carolina are deeply linked thru intermarriages. The Guerry family derives from the French Huguenots also naturalized in Charles Towne in 1696. They belonged to a large contingent of refugees who first settled in Dublin, Ireland. One of these descendents, Anne Guerry, marries Manesseh Michau, brother of Jacob who marries Ester Cromwell.

May 24, 1999. Today the Genealogy files of the Latter Day Saints came on line with a web site. Their files indicate that This Abraham to have been born in Georgetown District of South Carolina, and was married three times. The first time to Mrs Anne Guerry Dupont, born 1699, in St James Parish, Georgetown. I can find no information to support this claim of birth or of this marriage by Abraham. Anne Guerry marries Alexander Dupont, and their daughter Elizabeth marries Paul Michau, son of Abraham and Lydia Michau. Bairds book on Huguenot Emigration identifies another Anne Guerry married to Francois Vincent, a sailmaker, naturalized in England Mar 21, 1682. and a week later he sailed from london with his family to New York.

Sep 10, 2002. Today I received a reproduction of the Ravenel and St Julian List, used and quoted by Rev Wilson, and published in the book by Baird, in 1885. The list (liste) was originally prepared 1695-1696, the object was to furnish the descendents of the French and Swiss Refugees, in print, the contents of an old manuscript "List of Refugees", in possession of our family (St Julian), who were naturalized in Charleston, SC, by the Governor of SC, in 1696. This "List" was also published in the "Southern Intellinger", Charleston, in 1822. Republished in "City Gazette", of Charleston in 1826. Some of the names are spelled different and the French interpretation has perhaps changed some. The list is basically the same as Rev Wilson quoted. Pierre Michaud is paragraph 89. The name Bertonneau, was spelled Bertomeau. The List does not list Abraham, but list the other children, with a comment that a child was later born in Carolina. I assume this is Abraham. Omission and not listed by Rev Wilson, this paragraph 89, also list Daniel Jodan, fils (son) d'Elie Jodon (of Elie Jodon) et (and) Sara Jodon, ne' (born) en (in) I'Isle de (of) Re'. Note: It list no wife or children for Daniel. I will try and intrepret Par 89.

89. PIERRE MICHAUD, fils (son) de (of) Jean Michaud, et de (and of) Caterine Michaud (My note: The name is spelled Caterine, not Catherine), de la (of the) Viledieu (Village) d'Onai, Province de (of) Poitou. Sarra Michaud, sa femme (his wife), fille de (daughter of) Jacques Bertomeau (note spelling here), et (and) Elizabet (note spelling) Bertomeau, ne en (born in) I'Isle (Island) de (of) Re', ci-devant femme (the before wife) d' (of) Elie Jodon. Abraham Michaud, fere (brother) du susdit ( ? ?) Pierre Michaud: idem ( ? ) et (and) Ester Michaud, sa femme (his wife), fille de (daughter of) Eli Jodon et (and) Sara Jodon, nee en (born in) I'Isle (Island) de (of) Re'. Jeane, Ester, Charlotte Michaud, leurs enfans (with child), nez en Caroline (born in Carolina). (my note: It does not list Abraham so the child must be him). Then it list Daniel Jodon as indicated above. So the Abraham born and christened in London is the brother of Pierre, or another Abraham, not this Abraham who marries Lydia. The Abraham, mention as a fugutive that settles on the banks of the Santee, can not be this Abraham who marries Lydia, or the father of this Abraham, as he born in Carolina.

What do we know now. Pierre and Abraham. the fugutives that settled on the Santee River is Pierre and Abraham listed in Par 89, of the List. Fugutive only means they were fugutives of France, escaped from the Catholic rule, as their family fled Province of Poitou, and moved to I'Isle of Re, then to London and on to America. We know that Abraham married Ester Jodon before they left London, and their last child, name unknown born in Carolina, or look at it again, is Charlotte the last child and born in Carolina. However Abraham who marries Charlotte/Lydia was born abt 1995, about the time the List was made, so I believe it was him. Lydias' grandfather is probably the George Juing, par 97 of the List, with her father Jean listed as being born in Carolina. So her birthdate, seems right to marry Abraham, born in Carolina. What is wrong here is Ester's birthdate of 1633 and marriage in 1665. I firmly believe that whoever put the information on the LDS (Latter Day Saints, Utah) files assumed the dates from entries of Pierre and Abraham. Ester's first child was born 1689, some 23 years after her marriage, and she would be 55 years old at the time, and 64 when Abraham is born in SC. This just can not be true. Her birth date at latest must be 1650 - 1657. Pierre married her mother in 1658, after Elie Jodon dies, and we have no actual date on that, so in reality, she could have been just a child at the time. In review of all the dates, her grandfather was only 9 years old when son Elie was born. All the date(s) were assumed by someone and guessed at for an about date. they have been adjusted, to reflect more realistic dates, still assumed and about."
