ID Number: I73350

  • RESIDENCE: VA and Mansfield, Piatt Co. IL
  • RELIGION: United Brethren
  • BIRTH: 6 Jun 1806, Virginia
  • DEATH: 19 Nov 1893, Sangamon Twp., Piatt Co. Illinois
  • BURIAL: Mackey Cem., S. of Mansfield, Piatt Co. IL
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2787]

Family 1 : Hugh Vance HANNA
  1.  David Ford HANNA

Notes

"REBECCA FORD : I think her story should be told because she must have been a strong, resourceful and remarkable woman who was sustained by a great faith in God throughout her 87 y. 5m. 13 d. of hardships, hard work, grief and suffering.

According to 1880 census of Piatt Co. IL her parents were born in New Jersey. Born 6 June 1806 in VA, she married Hugh Vance Hannah in Champaign Co. OH at age 18 yr. A daughter, Catherine G. Hannah was born in Logan Co. OH on 7 Jan 1825. Her first son, David Ford Hannah was born 6 Jan 1827 in a little log house. Soon after that, her husband Hugh had his "left knee crushed by a log rolling on it and was crippled ever since."

Nancy Vance Hannah was born in Clark Co. OH on 24 Oct 1828; William Patterson Hannah was born 28 Dec 1829; Joseph F. Hannah was born in OH on 4 June 1835. The children attended school in a small log cabin. In 1837 Joseph aged 2 yr. and William aged 9 yr died.

James H. Hannah was born at Logansville, OH in 1839 and Hugh Vance Hannah, Jr. was born in 1843. Catherine, her eldest, died in Logansville, OH in 1844 aged 19 yr.

Rebecca and Hugh with children David Ford aged 23, Nancy Vance aged 22, James H. aged 10, Hugh, Jr. aged 7 and John Wallace aged 4 settled in Sangamon Twp., Piatt Co. IL near Mansfield in 1849.

In 1850 Hugh and oldest son David Ford Hannah were farming about 320 acres in Sangamon Twp., Piatt Co. IL. David worked by the month for other farmers and carefully hoarded his resources in order to secure a home. On 30 Jan 1851 he married Frances Elizabeth Oulrey, the sister of Samuel Sly Oulrey who had married David's sister Nancy 2 months earlier on 28 Nov. 1850. They were identified with the United Brethren Church and earnestly endeavored to make their lives accord with the principles in which they believed. They were members of the Whig political party and David later became a Republican. Rebecca's youngest child, John Wallace Hannah, died 15 Jan 1853, aged 7 yr 1m 1d. A granddaughter, the second child of David and Frances, Nancy E. Hannah died 9 Feb 1859 at age 4 y 3 m 14 d.

Her unmarried farmer sons, 23 yr. old James H. Hannah and 19 yr. old Hugh Vance Hannah, Jr. voluntarily enlisted in the 107th Illinois Infantry Co. C. They joined for service and were enrolled by Cap't. David J. Ford at Monticello, Piatt Co. IL for a term of 3 yr. They were mustered into service 4 Sept. 1862 by Lt. Boies at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL. James was 5' 10" with light complexion, dark hair and hazel eyes. Hugh Vance, Jr. was 5'9" with light complexion, light hair and blue eyes. James was killed at Woodsonville, KY 31 Dec. 1862. In Jan and Feb of 1863, Hugh, Jr. was absent with leave, sick at home near Monticello; address rural Mahomet, IL. Corp. Hugh Vance Hannah, Jr. was reported missing in action 15 Nov.1863. He was captured at Lenoir, TN 16 Nov. 1863, confined at Richmond, VA 7 Dec. 1863, sent to Andersonville, GA 14 Feb. 1864, admitted to "hospital" 27 March 1864 and died same day of "diarrhoia" and buried in grave marked by stone #187.

Her grandson, Thomas Albert Oulrey, eldest son of Nancy and Samuel Oulrey died 28 Oct 1873 aged 22 y 2m 8d.

Hugh Vance Hannah, Sr. had been suffering from asthma since about 1858 and because of this condition of his lungs and his injured knee was not able to work more than 1/4 of the time. He was weak and emaciated. For 12 years preceding his death he was at least 3/4 disabled for maintaining his family by manual labor as a farmer. He died 15 Sept. 1874 and Rebecca, aged 69, continued to reside on the home place. Her daughter, Nancy and husband Samuel Oulrey lived within 1 mile of her since 1857. Her grandson, Joseph P. Hannah, son of David and Frances Hannah died 26 Jan. 1878 aged 4 y 2 m.

On 30 Dec 1879 Rebecca applied for pension as being 3/4 dependent upon her son James and Hugh, Jr. for support. In 1880, according to Piatt Co., IL Census she was living with her son David Ford Hannah. She gave affidavit before the court on 17 Dec. 1881. Another affidavit was given by friends and neighbors Christian and John Mackey on 14 Feb. 1882 concerning her need for a pension and another by Solomon Argo and Lewis C. Clark. At that time Rebecca had about $50. personal property after debts were paid. Part of her land was not in cultivation and she did not receive over $60. per year for the land which she rented out. David J. Ford, aged 50 yr. gave an affidavit on 29 Oct 1883 stating that Rebecca had Real Estate in Piatt Co. consisting of 69 1/2 acres worth $1,750. and personal property worth $500. and that he knew the family since 1859 and had business and social relations with them up to 1862 when the boys enlisted in his Co. Physician Jacob Culver of Mahomet, IL gave affidavit on 28 March 1884 that he rendered medical services to the husband of Rebecca. Her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Samuel S. Oulrey gave affidavit on 9 Dec 1884 that her parents had relied on daily assitance from 1857. On 14 Feb. 1882 she had about $50. personal property after debts were paid. The Dep't. of the Interior asked for endorsement as to the standing in the community and the reputation of David J. Ford and of Samuel and Nancy Oulrey. Rebecca was required to give another affidavit at age 77 years when she was unable to sign her name, just made her mark x, witnessed by her son D. F. Hannah and her son-in-law S.S. Oulrey. Solomon Argo gave another affidavit on 24 April 1889 along with Nathan Hainline and Robert Huston.

A pension of $8. a month commencing 28 March 1864 and $12. a month from 19 March 1886 was submitted for approval on 25 May 1889 with a fee of $25. paid to the attorney in Jacksonville, IL who filed the claim on 16 Dec. 1884. Another fee of $22. was paid later. Her last check was paid 4 Oct 1893. She was dropped from the pension rolls because of her death at Mansfield, IL. She had lived part of the time either with her son David and family or her daughter Nancy and family until she died at the age of 87. She is buried near many of her family in Mackey Cemetery, near Mansfield, IL. Date of death on her tombstone is 19 Nov. 1893."
